I used to work at this store. When a new district manager took over, she kept bringing in people she had worked with at her previous employer, and as a result I was overlooked for advancement several times. Eventually I was moved up, but only into a lower-level position, and the new managers kept turning to me with their questions. None of them knew anything about animal care, and one had no retail background whatsoever. He, too, was a personal friend of that district manager.
After seeing how little my "upper management" could do, I started hearing from the store's general manager, who had stayed on, that I should stop fussing over the animals and concentrate on selling to customers. It is ironic, considering the company slogan reads "Where animals come first."
The general manager had committed numerous violations, including sexual advances, racist conduct and comments about people's sexual preferences. My breaking point came when I looked at the timekeeping system, which I was able to open, and saw that my punch times had been edited. Other people had the same thing done to them. The system marks every manual edit in red, and management has no way to hide it.
I reported this to human resources. They answered that they had found no evidence of it, and proposed that I go back to work under that same manager.
Last, I contacted the labor department. They said they could do nothing without proof. I no longer had any access to the company's computers to show the edits, although I had noted the dates, and they declined to visit the location and audit it. Thanks, no one.
