A few of months ago my wife signed up to Privacy Matters, believing that for a one-off payment of $1, she could view her credit score.in the small print it said there would be a monthly charge of $19.95. After the first month, we noticed the monthly charge, and called to have them cancel the account. Well the following month I noticed we were charged again, only instead there were two charges of $19.95 this month. We called them again, this time we were more persistent and they agreed (and did) refund both payments, and cancelled the accounts.
Well I looked through the records, and we were also charged a $1 charge from a company called savingsmart that started the same day as our privacymatters charge. This charge continued each month without us noticing until today (4 months later). I've called and had them cancel our account, which I will assume worked.
How are these two companies linked? Well, they have the same address! Unless there was something else in the small print when we subscribed to privacymatters, it looks like the companies simply shares the credit information to double their chances of us giving them money without realising it.
