Rose Austin and David Schaffer are in Lincoln City, Oregon, claiming to be inheriting a home. Since the finalization of the estate has been delayed, they needed a vacation rental for approximately one month. We accepted a check from them, allowed them into the home, and immediately learned that the check, written on a Texas bank, was not covered. They stalled for a few days, and gave me every excuse in the book, promising to have the funds wired to me. They desperately wanted me to deposit the check, because they said it would be covered by the time it got to their bank. Since out of state checks can take up to two weeks to clear, I refused. Yesterday, after googling them and finding this site, I called the police. On their advice, I went to the house, gave them 45 minutes to get out and told them that the police were standing by to send an officer over after that time to 'help' them. Something tells me they didn't want to become acquainted with our local police. They were long gone with time to spare. We got off easy, losing just a few days rent and no damage.
