Craigslist Security Guard Jobs Scam
Security Guard Jobs Scam on Craigslist

There is an outrageously popular scam by Security Guard School in New York City. They place ad in craigslist as if they need individuals to work as Security Guard and when you call or send in your resume, they get back to you saying that they have thousand of positions available at various location throughout the city. They brag-brag-and-brag about the positions and tell you that you would be a perfect match for the position given the benefits and rewards.

When you get hooked in their little scam, the tell you that you need to give then about 1200 dollars to get you certified in Metal detector, CPR, pre-assignment, 16 hour on the job training, loss prevention, certificate of fitness and sometime even try to hook you into paying them as much as an extra $500 for a NYC gun permit.

After you put down all that money, they tell you that the site closed before you completed the training and that there are not sites open at this time for you to work on. They then take your info and you never again here from then and every time you call them is the same until you get tire and forget about the whole thing.

They tried to scam me by tricking into getting overpriced certifications and training not required to be a security guard in New York State. When I called for an interview as the Ad on Craigslist required, they pitch me every certification on the planet and when I told them that I had all the certification/training allegedly required for the job. They told that it was better because it put me ahead of the line but I need to pay 120 dollars to register with them. But I told then that I was licensed, therefore, registered with NY dept of state. The person on the phone scorned but you are not registered with us but. I then, informed him that he was not a regulatory agency for me to register with him and that he needed to informed what regulations state that I have pay a fee to register with him, he cursed me out and hang up the phone.

Over the following days, I proceeded to call numerous Security Guard job postings on craigslist and all turned out to be similar certification pitching scam.

I now countless people who ere scammed using this technique, But this thief keep on doing the same thing over and over.

If any one wants to work as a security guard in New York State, they only need the 8 hour pre-assignment class. After you get a job, you need 16 hour on the job training (that's why it is called: On-The-Job-Training). Then, if you decide that you want to keep on doing security guard work (which is normally underpaid and tedious (for it requires you to put your life in danger or deal with all kind of crazy people on a daily basis), you need to be licensed by New York Dept of State.

If you want to get a certificate of fitness from the fire department (http://www.nyc. Gov/html/fdny/html/c_of_f/coff. Shtml), you can download the study materials from their site which is free. Then pay a $25 fee to take the test. You don't have to pay costly classes or pay expensive tutor because this test are really simple (I am not studious and got 95 on it)

As for all the other Certifications, They are never required by New York State to be a security guard. They are optional at best. You can get them down the road to have the bragging rights but that's down the road when you get a great job that pays for it or when gain enough experience to be consider for a supervisory position.

Finally, some of the certification being pitch do not even make any since.

For example, Pistol permit, you re more likely to be struck by lightening than get a job as an armed guard without experience. Even if you can manage pass the background investigation and to convince the NYPD to give a hand gun permit because someday some will let an inexperience guard secure their multimillion dollar assets, you won't find people to hire you without experience. Sometimes, armored company hire experienced unarmed guards and trained them in order to get their pistol permits but you don't have to pay them a dime.

Another example is fire director, in order to get a fire director license in NYC; you need at least two years of experience working in the place where you are going to be tested. So, it makes no sense to pay $1000 for the class if you can use it. Moreover, most institution pay for fire director classes for their employees and will gladly pay because they are require to have a fire director onsite all times or they get fined a heavy penalty by the fire dept. So by having as many fire guard as possible take the fire director exam, they avoid personnel shortage when the directors are out, sick, on vacation or on salary dispute

In conclusion, try to avid this security guard scams in craigslist for they can be very costly.
