Letter arrives in "sealed security enveloped" informing recipient that s/he will receive US$27,500 for sending in a form and, incidentally, buying at least one Huari rechargeable shaver. Money never arrives, of course. Apparently, sending in the form entitles one to participate in a sweepstakes that doesn't pay out for at least 12 months and whose prizes range from US$27,500 to US$1.00.
As a long-time veteran of complaint, I recognized a rotten egg immediately. However, this is a relatively new scam that hadn't made the Report yet. Nothing like being on the cutting edge of a scam, eh?
A Web search revealed that Willoughby & Johnson has been conducting similar schemes for a while, mainly in Australia and New Zealand. Moreover, the RCMP has posted a scam warning on its web site stating that 14 Canadians have been bilked over the summer; Canadian recipients of the so-called shaver sweepstakes offer should contact PhoneBusters at (800) 495-8501.
