I was both a STUDENT and EMPLOYEE @ Spalding. PLEASE READ if you have ever heard of Spalding, & especially IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING going to Spalding!
Please stay FAR AWAY from Spalding University!
I did not pick Spalding because I had $. It is a private Catholic college & quite pricey.
I only chose to go there when a rep came to my school & showed me a report that said my family had such a low income I'd get 100% Gov't Aid. I was psyched! And really stupid.
I ended up working 2 jobs on top of work-study to try to pick up the tab because they lied.
Bad idea. Grades suffer, Gov't aid gets taken away.
But then, I got offered a job @ Spalding's Night/Weekend office & found out you get free tuition as a full-time employee. So I took it. The schedule was tricky because I worked all day, but thought, I can just sign up for the night/weekend classes & it's all good. That's when I found out how screwed I was. You had to be 23 to take the weekend/night classes & I was only 19. So I was 19, living on the other side of town, working @ a college & not even able to take classes!
So I made noise about it, they didn't like it & moved me to another department. They wouldn't work with me, they wouldn't help me & let me keep going to school. I tried to file a complaint about the situation & got a letter a month later basically telling me to shut up & quit if I didn't like it.
They lied about what I was going to be paid @ my new position, but it was either keep the job or be out of a job on the street. So I ended up working in the basement of this big University building down on 4th street until 6 or 6:30 @ night, alone. There I was, processing payments & student registrations everyday, like a slap in the face because I was working @ a college & I couldn't even finish my own college education.
Long story short, they gave me a fake walkie-talkie that was supposed to be linked to security for the hours after everyone else left the office, & I ended up getting harrassed by a janitor all the time & then mugged in the alley one night walking to my car because security was no where to be found. It was ridiculous. The whole situation makes me sick to this day to think that I wasted valuable years of my life @ this institution trying to find a way to complete my education, & to top it off, my life was endangered because they didn't care enough about me as an employee to even keep a security guard at the financial office with me at night?!
So as an ex-employee, HERE'S MORE DIRT:
The Financial Aid office kept taking my Gov't Aid even though I was a tuition-free employee NOT taking classes. THAT'S GOVERNMENT FRAUD!!!
Their computer system was so screwed up, it showed I OWED thousands of dollars even though they OWED ME money.
Virtually all of the students' accounts were incredibly inaccurate, but I was told to keep processing payments & bills as usual. So I guess, until someone complained (which did no good anyway) we'd just keep taking people's money.
I tried to get a lawyer to hear my case, but no one would touch it because Spalding was a Private Catholic college. Go figure. That was before the whole mess w / the abuse cases & the Archdiocese. Maybe if it had been a year or so later, then someone money-hungry lawyer would have joined the media frenzy & chowed-down on my case right away.
