The facts on this page come from Tenet's own site, SEC filings, BBB, the CFPB database and government releases. Quality of care and billing experiences differ by facility, so the hospital or center named on a bill is the best starting point.

Tenet Healthcare complaints: billing, financial assistance, privacy settlement and where to complain
This page is about Tenet Healthcare Corporation, the Dallas parent company. Its own website footer says the hospitals it describes "are owned and/or operated by subsidiaries or affiliates of Tenet Healthcare Corporation", so a bill, a visit or a complaint usually concerns one named hospital or surgery center, not the parent. The practical routes below come from Tenet's and government pages opened on October 20, 2026.
- Find the facility. The Contact Us page says: "To reach a Tenet facility, visit the Our Locations page for specific contact information." The Find a Facility page showed 695 facilities on October 20, 2026. Corporate office: 14201 Dallas Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75254, 469-893-2000. The same page lists an Ethics and Compliance line, 800-838-4427; Tenet's Ethics and Compliance page refers to an "Ethics Action Line" for employees whose concerns are not resolved; it does not say that line takes patient billing questions.
- Apply for financial assistance. Tenet publishes Corporate Policy COMP-RCC 4.53 (Financial Assistance for Uninsured Patients, effective 6/17/22). It defines a "Financially Indigent" patient as an uninsured patient with annual income "below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level" (unless state law sets a higher threshold) and says qualifying patients get "Charity Care Discounts of 100% of the Facility's Gross Charges, less any applicable copayment or amount previously paid by the patient or any third-party for that care". The policy requires an application unless the account falls in a presumptive-charity category (listed examples include homeless patients and certain Medicaid exhausted-benefit or spend-down accounts, where a discount "may be offered without a Financial Assistance application or documentation of Income"); while income is being verified, "the patient will be treated in accordance with the terms of the Compact". It also says that if a patient does not send requested information "within 14 calendar days", the application will be denied except where the law requires otherwise. Patients who do not qualify are "considered for a partial discount under the Compact or Cash Pay Rates". Facilities in California follow a separate addendum that covers patients "at or below 400% of the federal poverty level" and "Patients with High Medical Costs"; it says those at or below 400% should be billed no more than the amount the facility would expect, in good faith, to receive from Medicare, provides a payment plan with monthly payments not above 10 percent of household income (after essential living expenses), and lets a patient appeal a denial by writing to Attention: CFAC, P.O. Box 223849, Dallas, TX 75222-3849.
- Tenet's Compact with Uninsured Patients. Tenet's one-page Compact says uninsured patients will be offered discounted pricing "equivalent to the hospital's current managed care rates" and that hospitals "will not pursue legal action for non-payment of bills against any patient who is unemployed or without other significant income". It also says hospitals will not pursue legal action if the only recovery available would be a lien on the patient's home, and that uninsured patients "will be offered reasonable payments and payment schedules". It applies to uninsured patients at Tenet hospitals and excludes people who live outside the United States and travel here for specialized care.
- Privacy settlement (open). A proposed class settlement about tracking pixels on Tenet websites and patient portals is pending in Shelby County, Tennessee. People identified in Tenet's records who used a Tenet website or patient portal from January 1, 2017 to September 18, 2023 to create a portal account, submit a web form or check in online to urgent care or an emergency room can claim a one-time $16.00 payment (no proof required) and two years of CyEx Privacy Shield Pro. Claim deadline March 15, 2027; opt-out and objection deadline November 27, 2026; final approval hearing January 14, 2027. The Healthelife app counts as an online platform. The official site is tenetpixelsettlement.com; the administrator's toll-free number is (833) 296-0729, and the FAQ says not to contact the court or the Clerk of Court about the settlement. Tenet denies wrongdoing and the court has not decided who is right.
- Unexpected medical bills. CMS's "Medical bill rights" page says the law protects insured patients from certain unexpected out-of-network bills and that uninsured or self-pay patients can usually request a good faith estimate and may dispute a bill that is "at least $400 more than the estimate". The page also lists a phone line for questions and for submitting a complaint, 1-800-985-3059 (page last modified 10/05/2026).
- If a debt collector contacts you. The CFPB's debt collection page says a collector "is required to provide the name of the creditor, the amount owed, how to dispute the debt, and more". A collector is a separate business from the hospital that provided care. The CFPB complaint portal accepts complaints about debt collection and credit reporting.
- Other independent routes. BBB accepts complaints about the company (see the complaint record section for what BBB displays). Your state health department or attorney general can also take hospital and billing complaints; this page does not list state-by-state routes.
Complaint record: BBB, CFPB, Trustpilot and this site
The figures below are snapshots from three separate sources, displayed on October 20, 2026. They measure different things and are not added together or compared.
- BBB. BBB profile for Tenet Healthcare Corporation, 1445 Ross Ave STE 1400, Dallas: "NOT a BBB Accredited Business", BBB Rating A-. The stated reason for the rating is "Failure to respond to 3 complaint(s) filed against business". The complaints tab says 93 complaints in the last 3 years and 14 in the last 12 months; the reviews tab shows "1 /5 stars" and "Average of 26 Customer Reviews". The most recent complaint displayed (dated 09/16/2026) is typed "Billing Issues". BBB says it does not verify the accuracy of third-party information and that the complaint text shown may not represent all complaints. BBB also lists many separate Tenet hospital and clinic entries; this is the Dallas corporate listing.
- CFPB. The CFPB Consumer Complaint Database lists 1,269 complaints under the company name TENET HEALTHCARE CORPORATION, first received 2013-08-13 and latest received 2026-07-27, with 11 received since 2025-10-20. Of the 1,269, 1,198 are in the Debt collection product, 45 in 'Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports', 16 in 'Credit reporting', 1 in 'Credit reporting or other personal consumer reports', 2 in 'Bank account or service', 2 in 'Consumer Loan', 2 in 'Money transfer, virtual currency, or money service', 1 in 'Mortgage', 1 in 'Payday loan' and 1 in 'Payday loan, title loan, or personal loan'. The most common issues listed are "Cont'd attempts collect debt not owed" (399), "Disclosure verification of debt" (343), "Attempts to collect debt not owed" (168) and "Written notification about debt" (110). The database shows company responses of "Closed with explanation" for 1,267 and "Closed" for 2; timely response is shown as Yes for 1,124 and No for 145. These are consumer-submitted complaints that the CFPB does not verify, and the database does not say which Tenet business or collector handled each one.
- Trustpilot. The Trustpilot page for tenethealth.com is an unclaimed profile with 0 reviews.
- This site. One archive post on this site, dated 2006-04-22, is an employee's workplace complaint about the laboratory at North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, Georgia; its title carries the label "TENET". According to the Justice Department, North Fulton Medical Center Inc., a Tenet subsidiary, owned and operated hospitals in the Atlanta area until April (2016), so the hospital was a Tenet subsidiary's facility when the post was written. It is not a patient complaint, is linked to this page as an affiliated, facility-level post and is not counted as a complaint about the parent company itself. This page therefore shows no complaints counted as Tenet Healthcare's own.
Government settlements and enforcement actions involving Tenet
The items below are quoted from government releases opened on October 20, 2026. Each describes what the government alleged and how the matter was resolved; none is a finding by this site.
- 2016: kickback case involving Atlanta-area hospitals. The Georgia Attorney General's release of October 3, 2016 says Tenet and several subsidiaries "will pay more than $513 million to resolve criminal charges and civil claims relating to a scheme to pay kickbacks in return for patient referrals". It says Tenet would pay $368 million to settle civil allegations that it paid kickbacks to Clinica de la Mama, an obstetric clinic, and related entities to induce referrals for labor and delivery, and that the global resolution included criminal forfeiture of over $145 million. It says Atlanta Medical Center, Inc. and North Fulton Medical Center, Inc. "have both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the federal Anti-Kickback Statute and to defraud the United States", with the plea agreements "subject to acceptance by the court". The Justice Department's case page describes the same pleas as agreements to plead guilty and says Tenet HealthSystem Medical, Inc. entered a non-prosecution agreement with a three-year term (extendable by up to one year), under which Tenet agreed to retain an independent compliance monitor. The Justice Department page states that the two hospital subsidiaries owned and operated acute-care hospitals in the Atlanta area "Up until April" (the page does not name the year); the case number is 1:16-CR-00350-AT (N.D. Ga.). The conduct was alleged in a criminal information and in civil complaints filed in 2013 and 2014.
- 2006: Medicare billing settlement. A Justice Department release of June 29, 2006 says Tenet agreed to pay "more than $900 million" over four years to resolve civil allegations about billing to Medicare and other federal programs: more than $788 million for excessive outlier payments, more than $47 million for alleged kickbacks to physicians and referrals from physicians with improper financial relationships, and more than $46 million for upcoding. The release says the amount "was based on the company's ability to pay".
- 2020: cardiac monitors. The HHS Office of Inspector General's listing of a Justice Department announcement dated February 11, 2020 says Tenet and its Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California agreed to pay $1.41 million to resolve False Claims Act allegations of knowingly charging Medicare for implanting unnecessary cardiac monitors.
- 2023: Detroit Medical Center. The OIG listing of a Justice Department announcement dated May 31, 2023 says VHS of Michigan Inc. (doing business as the Detroit Medical Center), Vanguard Health Systems Inc. and Tenet Healthcare Corporation agreed to pay $29,744,065 to resolve False Claims Act allegations that they provided kickbacks to certain referring physicians.
Searches of state regulator databases were not completed for this page, so the absence of other actions from this list is not a statement that none exist. Tenet's 10-K says the company is "regularly named in various legal actions" and that it has received inquiries from government agencies in recent years.
Lawsuits and settlements involving Tenet
The cases below are listed with the status shown in the sources opened on October 20, 2026. Allegations are not findings.
- Tracking-pixel class action (proposed settlement, pending). Jane Doe v. AMISUB (SFH), Inc. d/b/a Saint Francis Hospital-Memphis, Case No. CT-3086-23, Circuit Court for Shelby County, Tennessee. The settlement site says the lawsuit alleges Tenet used third-party tracking technologies on its websites in a way that violates privacy laws, that Tenet "denies that it did anything wrong" and that the court has not decided who is right. Class counsel is J. Gerard Stranch, IV, per the settlement FAQ, and will ask the court to approve $8,500,000.00 in attorney's fees and costs, to be paid by Tenet. Final approval hearing: January 14, 2027.
- 2022 data security incident (settled). Class counsel's firm reports that on June 5, 2024 a Dallas County, Texas district judge granted final approval of a class settlement with Tenet Healthcare Corporation, VHS San Antonio Partners (Baptist Healthcare System) and Resolute Hospital Company over unauthorized access to systems between March 31 and April 24, 2022; plaintiffs alleged more than 1,200,000 people were affected, and the settlement created a $10,000,000.00 non-reversionary fund. This detail comes from the plaintiffs' law firm, not the court order.
- Criminal information against two hospital subsidiaries (2016). United States v. Atlanta Medical Center, Inc. and North Fulton Medical Center, Inc., 1:16-CR-00350-AT (N.D. Ga.), described in the government settlements section. The Justice Department's page lists the case under "Closed Criminal Division Cases"; the docket itself was not reviewed for this page, so the court's disposition is unverified.
- SEC disclosure. Tenet's fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, Note 17 (Claims and Lawsuits), names no individual lawsuit. It says Tenet is "regularly named in various legal actions in the ordinary course of our business" and believes resolution of its existing ordinary-course claims "will not have a material effect on our business or financial condition". Its table of legal-settlement liability shows a balance of $38 million at December 31, 2025 (and $20 million a year earlier), in millions as the filing states.
