Pitney Bowes complaints: how to cancel a contract, return a meter and who else takes complaints
This page was checked on 2026-10-18. Pitney Bowes publishes its own steps for contract cancellation and equipment return; they are summarized below with the date each article shows.
Cancel a meter or equipment contract. The support article 'Submitting a contract cancellation request' (updated December 23, 2024) says to sign in to the Pitney Bowes Your Account portal, choose Your Account, then Contract Details, select the contract, choose 'Request Termination of Contract' in the Contract Dates section, complete the form and submit it; 'Your case will be assigned to a Pitney Bowes representative who will assist in completing your request.'
Return the equipment. The article 'Returning equipment after canceling a contract' (updated April 9, 2025) lists three steps: initiate the cancellation request, withdraw unused postage funds, then return the meter. It states that 'Funds withdrawn from a meter are returned to the original funding source' and that 'After a cancellation request is finalized, a return kit will be provided with a shipping label and instructions to return your meter to Pitney Bowes.' It also says: 'If the original funding source was a USPS prepaid account, review USPS prepaid withdrawals before continuing.' It adds that if a technician is required to return a machine, the representative will say so after the cancellation request is completed.
Cancellation is a request. The cancellation article describes the steps as creating a case through the online portal to 'submit a request to cancel your contract'. The article does not state termination charges or lease terms; the lease or rental agreement itself governs those, so check your agreement. Some archive reports on this site allege termination charges.
Lease end. The company's Lease End Information Center describes three options (getting a new meter, extending the lease, returning the meter). It says that within a year of the lease ending customers can review offers online with their account number and, 'If you don't see any offers, simply call 855.752.2523 to speak with a representative'; for a lease extension it says the account must be 'in good standing and compliant with the USPS IMI regulations'. For a replacement meter it says: 'Follow the instructions in your return kit to withdraw any remaining funds; then package your original meter and scale in the box provided. Apply return label to box and hand over to the UPS.'
Contact. The Contact Us page lists a virtual assistant (available 24/7, with live agents Mon-Fri 8am-8pm ET), a phone line at 844-256-6444 (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm ET; the page says its automated voice message system is live 24 hours a day), and a 'Create a Case' form that requires signing in. Keep dates, case numbers, the tracking number of the returned meter and the postage-withdrawal confirmation.
- BBB. BBB accepts complaints against the business through its profile.
- Financing and banking products. The company's financial-services page says banking products are provided by The Pitney Bowes Bank, Inc. (Member FDIC), a Utah state-chartered bank, and financing by Pitney Bowes Global Financial Services, LLC. The 10-K says the Bank is regulated by the Utah Department of Financial Institutions and the FDIC.
- Other routes. A state attorney general's consumer-protection office and, for financial products, the CFPB also accept complaints.
Who operates Pitney Bowes
The registrant is Pitney Bowes Inc., a Delaware corporation (SEC EDGAR) whose common stock trades on the NYSE under PBI. Its Form 10-K for fiscal 2025 (filed 2026-02-19) describes it as 'a technology-driven company that provides digital shipping solutions, mailing innovation, and financial services' and says it serves 'more than 90 percent of the Fortune 500' (company statement). The same filing reports approximately 6,600 employees, 75 percent of them in the United States.
Business segments. SendTech Solutions covers shipping and mailing technology, supplies, maintenance services and equipment financing; Presort Services is described as the largest workshare partner of the U.S. Postal Service with 34 operating centers. In August 2024 the company exited its Global Ecommerce business through an orderly wind-down.
Headquarters. The filing states that effective January 1, 2026 the corporate headquarters relocated to Shelton, Connecticut; SEC and BBB both list 27 Waterview Drive, Shelton, CT 06484.
Related entities. The 10-K says The Pitney Bowes Bank is a wholly owned subsidiary and is chartered as an Industrial Bank under Utah law. The company's financial-services page says financing products are provided by Pitney Bowes Global Financial Services, LLC. The financial-services page attributes its financing products and its banking products to these two entities by name.
Postal rules. The Contact Us page carries the notice 'New USPS meter technology standards are in effect as of June 30, 2024' with a 'Check your meter compliance' link.

Trustpilot's separate page for Pitney Bowes Ltd (UK & ROI) is a different entity page and is not used here.
CFPB. A company-name search of the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database for 'pitney' and for 'bowes' returned 0 complaints on 2026-10-18. The database covers financial products and services only.
This site's archive. This site's archive links 15 older reports about Pitney Bowes, all dated 2003 to 2012. Complainants describe postage-meter rental or lease terms and termination charges, returned meters that the company allegedly did not record, bills passed to collection agencies, free-trial offers, and pricing, insurance and tax charges on leased equipment; one is a former employee's account of the workplace. These are individual allegations from the posts' authors, not findings, and are many years old.
Litigation and regulatory filings
The Form 10-K (Note 16, Commitments and Contingencies) says the company is from time to time involved in litigation over contractual rights, intellectual property, equipment or service disputes with clients, and disputes with employees, and that some actions may be brought as purported class actions. The matters below are allegations or filings; none is a finding against the company.
Purported class action by a meter lessee (Schramm Law Group, LLC v. Pitney Bowes Inc., N.D. Ill. 1:25-cv-05830). CourtListener's docket (last known filing April 29, 2026) lists the case as filed May 23, 2025 as a removal. The court's March 6, 2026 opinion describes the plaintiff, an Illinois law firm, as saying that ink cartridges it bought from Pitney Bowes stopped operating while they still had ink in them; the plaintiff leased a 'Mailstation2' and brings class-action claims under the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act plus good faith, unjust enrichment, trespass to chattels and conversion. On March 6, 2026 the court granted Pitney Bowes's motion to dismiss: Counts I to IV were dismissed without prejudice and Counts V and VI with prejudice, with leave to file a second amended complaint. An amended complaint was docketed on March 19, 2026, a motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim on April 2, 2026, a stay on April 13, 2026 and an order on a motion to stay on April 29, 2026. The documents after March 6 are not available on the free docket, so the outcome after April 2026 was not verified.
Trilogy Leasing dispute (commercial). The Form 10-K says that on October 1, 2024 one of the former Global Ecommerce debtors filed a complaint against Trilogy Leasing Co., LLC in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas to recharacterize certain 'Equipment Supplements' as disguised financings, and that Pitney Bowes was granted leave to intervene on April 1, 2025. On November 7, 2024 Trilogy and its parent Kingsbridge Holdings, LLC sued Pitney Bowes in Cook County, Illinois, alleging liability for equipment supplements executed by the former Global Ecommerce entities and by Pitney Bowes Presort Services, LLC and seeking $95 million in lease payments plus interest and fees. The company removed the case to the Northern District of Illinois on December 16, 2024, and on July 15, 2025 that court granted in part and denied in part the company's motion. A related Delaware action by Mitsubishi 'has been settled for an immaterial amount'. The latest source, the Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (filed 2026-07-30, Note 13), says the dispute 'has resulted in three separate litigations', that the Trilogy suit against Pitney Bowes Inc. and Pitney Bowes Presort Services, LLC 'is pending in the Northern District of Illinois', and that the Texas case was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction at the company's request after the parties agreed it was moot. This is a dispute between companies, not a consumer case.
Federal postage settlement (2015). On October 13, 2015 the Department of Justice announced that Pitney Bowes Presort Services Inc., a subsidiary, 'has agreed to pay the United States $9.4 million to resolve allegations that it underpaid postage' at its Reading, Pennsylvania facility by claiming discounted postage rates for mail that failed to comply with the Move Update standard. The release states: 'The claims settled in this case are allegations only, and there has been no determination of liability.' This concerned postage owed to the Postal Service, not consumer purchases.
Recent docket. Justia lists Luby et al v. Pitney Bowes Inc., D. Conn. 3:26-cv-01311, filed August 14, 2026, nature of suit 'Contract: Other' (diversity, breach of contract); the listing does not state the subject of the claims.
The 10-K and 10-Q state management's opinion that the final outcome of outstanding matters will not have a material adverse effect on the company's financial position. A Form 10-K/A filed 2026-02-20 states it was filed solely to correct the office location on the auditor's report and consent.
No regulator enforcement order concerning consumer products was identified in the sources checked on 2026-10-18 (the 10-K, the 10-Q, the BBB profile, the CFPB database name search and the Justia and CourtListener dockets named above); this is a statement about those sources only.
Recent corporate filings. Among the latest Form 8-K filings, one dated 2026-09-30 reports a September 29, 2026 amendment to the company's credit agreement that reduces the margin on its tranche B term loans.
Is Pitney Bowes Legitimate?
Pitney Bowes Inc. is an SEC registrant (CIK 78814) that files annual and quarterly reports, trades on the NYSE as PBI, and lists a headquarters at 27 Waterview Drive, Shelton, Connecticut. BBB lists it as accredited since 1996-08-06 with an A+ rating, while also displaying 356 complaints in the last 3 years and a customer-review average of 1.01 out of 5 (as displayed on 2026-10-18).
Those facts identify the company and show a large complaint volume on BBB; they do not establish the facts of any individual dispute. Archive reports on this site describe contract-term, return and billing disputes from 2003 to 2012 and are allegations. Customers who have a dispute should use the cancellation and return steps above and keep records.
