EF Go Ahead Tours

EF Go Ahead Tours sells escorted group tours from Cambridge, Massachusetts and is part of EF Education First. This page collects the company's own cancellation, refund, rebooking and travel-protection terms as displayed on October 5, 2026, the BBB and Trustpilot figures as displayed that day, and three federal lawsuits naming EF Go Ahead entities, each ended by a dismissal. The help center says cancellations must be processed over the phone (rebooking can also be started online), and its Terms and help center give different refund-window wording that is set out side by side below. This site links no complaints to the Go Ahead Tours brand itself; three older posts about the sister student-travel brand EF Tours are shown separately.

How to cancel, get a refund or complain: what EF Go Ahead Tours' own pages say (checked October 5, 2026)

These routes come from EF Go Ahead Tours' own pages, opened on October 5, 2026. The company's Terms & Conditions page shows no "last updated" date; the help-center cancellation article is marked "Updated" one month before that date.

Cancelling. The help-center article "Canceling your tour" says: "most reservation changes, including cancellations, must be handled over the phone with our Support Team" and "Cancellations must be processed over the phone for account security purposes." It gives 1-617-202-2116 for U.S. travelers and 1-800-754-5066 for Canadian travelers. Group Members are told to contact their Group Coordinator and Group Coordinators their Account Manager. The same article offers rebooking (online, by message or at 1-617-202-2116) and a hold that "freeze[s] your account and all funds for 90 days", which "may not be available if you're past your Tour Finalization Date".

Refund windows, as the company states them.

  • Help center ("Canceling your tour"): a full refund to the original form of payment if you cancel within 30 days of booking when you signed up for AutoPay or paid in full at booking, or within 72 hours for all other travelers. It adds that signing up for AutoPay or paying in full later gives no retroactive 30-day window.
  • Terms & Conditions ("Terms of reservations"): "The reservation fee is fully refundable if you cancel within 72 hours of booking the tour or by the Tour Finalization Date, whichever is sooner." After that the reservation fee ($300 for European land tours, $450 for non-European land tours, special event, land and cruise or customized tours) "becomes non-refundable and standard cancellation fees apply".
  • The two pages are worded differently; both are quoted here and neither is treated as the policy. If your booking date is near a limit, ask the company to confirm in writing which one it applies to your reservation.

Cancellation fees. Fees are per person and, per the Terms, are percentages of "the total tour cost, including reservation fee, flights purchased through Go Ahead Tours, extensions, excursions, and any additional upgrades or add-ons". For European land tours the Terms list $300 at 71 or more days before departure; the greater of $1,000 or 30 percent at 70-46 days; the greater of $1,000 or 50 percent at 45-8 days; and 100 percent at 7-0 days. For non-European land tours and special event tours the first tier is $450 and the later tiers are the same. Land & Cruise, Customized and Rocky Mountaineer tours, Rwanda tours and pre/post stays have their own schedules in the Terms. The help center lists them as follows: for Land & cruise, customized and Rocky Mountaineer tours, $450 at 91 or more days, the greater of $1,000 or 30 percent at 90-61 days, the greater of $1,000 or 50 percent at 60-46 days, 75 percent at 45-14 days and 100 percent at 13-0 days; for Rwanda tours, $1,000 at 91 or more days, the greater of $1,500 or 30 percent at 90-61 days, the greater of $1,800 or 50 percent at 60-46 days, 75 percent at 45-14 days and 100 percent at 13-0 days; for pre- and post-stays or extensions, $0 at 71 or more days, 30 percent at 70-46 days, 50 percent at 45-8 days and 100 percent at 7-0 days. The help center adds: "If you cancel a pre- or post-stay within 45 days of departure and need to change flights booked through Go Ahead, a $300 flight rebooking fee per traveler (plus fare difference) will apply." The help center repeats these tables, but its Rwanda figures differ from the Terms (for example, 60-46 days is "Greater of $1,800 or 50%" in the help center and "The greater of $2,000 or 50%" in the Terms). Travel protection is separate: the Terms say its cost is always non-refundable after departure, a claim, or 10 days after purchase.

If the company cancels. The Terms say that up to the Tour Finalization Date the company may cancel a tour with too few travelers; you may choose another tour or date, or "elect a refund of all funds paid to-date". For cancellations or postponements caused by a "Force Majeure Event" the Terms say "no refunds will be given" and travelers receive "a future travel voucher for all monies paid, less the cost of any purchased travel protection plan".

Other contacts. Help with a current booking: 1-800-597-0350. General number: 1-800-590-1161. 24/7 On-Tour Support: +1 617-619-1911. Non-urgent questions can go through the help-center request form ("we'll get back to you in two to three business days"). For a dispute you cannot resolve directly, the company has a BBB profile (see the complaint record below), and the Massachusetts Attorney General's 2020 press release about EF affiliates lists 617-727-8400 for consumer protection complaints.

Regulators: what was and was not found

No FTC, state attorney general or other agency action naming EF Go Ahead Tours, EF World Journeys, Inc., EF World Journeys International, Ltd. or Go Ahead Vacations, Inc. was identified in the sources checked on October 5, 2026 (CourtListener docket searches for those names and the Massachusetts Attorney General's press release). That is not an exhaustive search of every agency.

Related EF affiliates, 2020. On May 21, 2020 the Massachusetts Attorney General announced an assurance of discontinuance, filed in Suffolk Superior Court, with "EF Institute for Cultural Exchange Inc. and EF Explore America Inc.", which the release calls a "Cambridge-based educational travel company". The release says the office began discussions after receiving "more than 600 complaints" about trips cancelled in spring 2020 and that EF would offer additional cash refunds of $435 (international), $300 (domestic by air) and $100 (domestic by bus) for trips scheduled to depart March 11 through May 14, 2020, with requests due by September 30, 2022. The release does not name EF Go Ahead Tours, EF World Journeys or Go Ahead Vacations, and describes the Educational Tours and EF Explore America programs; it is included only because those programs share the EF name and some posts on this site concern them.

Massachusetts travel-services rule. In Karila (see the litigation record), the court described 940 C.M.R. 15.06, a Massachusetts Attorney General regulation for tour operators that fail to provide purchased travel services. The court quoted its three options for the consumer: cash equal to the fair market retail value of the undelivered service, an identified substitute of equal or greater value, or an identified lower-value substitute plus a cash refund of the difference.

Who runs EF Go Ahead Tours and how its terms work

The brand is sold at goaheadtours.com. Per the company's Terms ("US Booking Conditions", no date shown), EF Go Ahead tours "are operated outside of the U.S. by EF World Journeys International, Ltd." of Zurich, Switzerland, while EF World Journeys, Inc. (f/k/a Go Ahead Vacations, Inc.), Two Education Circle, Cambridge, MA, "is not an agent of EF World Journeys International, Ltd., acts only as a marketing service provider for that company, and does not provide any goods or services for your trip". The Terms refer to the two together as "EF Go Ahead Tours or GAT", so the term GAT in the Terms covers both entities, although the Terms say one operates the tours and the other acts only as a marketing service provider; the Terms also direct checks and money orders to EF World Journeys, Inc. Check the contracting entity named in your booking documents. A 2023 court filing in Karila uses the caption "EF World Journeys, Inc. (f/k/a Go Ahead Vacations, Inc.)".

The company's About page says it is "part of EF Education First, a family-owned, global community" and says Go Ahead has existed "for more than 60 years" (company claim). BBB's page shows a business start date of January 1, 1987 and lists EF Educational Tours and EF Education First, Inc. as related businesses. The sister student-travel site eftours.com lists EF Go Ahead Tours under "Other EF brands". The Terms say the company is a member of IATA and of the BBB of Eastern Massachusetts and is registered as a Seller of Travel in California (2060043-20), Washington (601794226) and Florida (ST42668).

Recent news. Travel Weekly reported on August 19 and August 27, 2026 that EF World Journeys plans a travel-advisor sales program covering EF Go Ahead Tours, EF Ultimate Break and EF Adventures, which would make 250-plus itineraries commissionable; the CEO said the program would roll out in the fall, and Travel Weekly wrote that no official date had been announced. The articles say the commission terms were not made public.

Product and payment terms, as the company states them. The home page offers a $99 deposit with AutoPay and interest-free monthly installments; the Terms set reservation fees of $300 (European land tours) or $450 per person, with the $99 AutoPay deposit applying toward that fee. The Terms say a $95 late fee applies on the Manual Payment Plan if payment is not received by the final payment date, while the company's payment-plans page says Manual Payment Plan travelers "will incur a $75 late fee" for payments that arrive after their Tour Finalization Date; the two pages state different amounts. The Terms say "Substitution of travelers is not permitted", that travelers who do not cancel before departure get no refund for unused portions, and that tour guides, hotels and airlines are independent contractors the company does not own or control (Release & Agreement, item 2). Item 3 of the Release says the traveler agrees "not to sue the Released Parties" for claims related to participation, and item 21 says disputes are governed by Massachusetts law and resolved "solely and exclusively in courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts".

Travel protection. The company's page describes a Travel Protection plan (up to $100,000 for accident and sickness medical expenses) and a Basic plan (up to $40,000), with insured components underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company and assistance services by Falck Global Assistance, offered under the direction of Risk Strategies. The Terms say the company "is not an insurer and is not responsible for coverage determinations". AnyReason Protection ($75 add-on) is described as a non-insurance cancellation fee waiver giving a future travel voucher, valid one year, for the value of cancellation fees; it is "not redeemable for cash" and cannot be applied to a new Travel Protection plan. Plans become non-refundable after departure, a claim, or 10 days after purchase.

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and this site's posts

Figures are shown as displayed on October 5, 2026 and are not added to or compared with this site's own posts.

  • BBB (profile for EF Go Ahead Tours, Cambridge, MA): BBB Accredited Business, rating A+. BBB shows 71 total complaints in the last 3 years and 16 closed in the last 12 months, and an average of 292 customer reviews at 4.38 out of 5. BBB states that customer reviews are not used in the letter grade and that displayed complaint text may not represent all complaints. BBB's underlying page data give a file-opened and accreditation date of July 23, 1996 and a business start date of January 1, 1987.
  • Trustpilot (page titled "Go Ahead Tours", goaheadtours.com): 2.1 out of 5 from 19 reviews; the profile is unclaimed and Trustpilot shows "No history of asking for reviews". One review shown with the date August 28, 2026 (its stated date of experience is August 27, 2026) says a refundable $1,000 payment made with one traveler's credit card was credited to a different traveler's card and that the company declined to reverse it; this is the reviewer's allegation, and no company reply was displayed in the review text read.

This site's posts. No post on this site naming "Go Ahead Tours" or "EF Go Ahead Tours" is linked to this page as a complaint about the brand: the one 2007 post under that name and one 2007 post about "EF Educational Tours" are written in machine-garbled text and were not used. Three older posts (2010 to 2012) name "EF Tours", the student-travel brand at eftours.com, and are linked as affiliate-brand posts. Their authors allege, among other things, a post-payment fee increase, a voucher that was smaller than expected after a cancelled tour, and lack of supervision on a school trip; these are the posters' accounts and EF Go Ahead Tours is not the subject of them.

Lawsuits naming EF Go Ahead entities

Docket status below is from CourtListener's mirror of the court dockets as read on October 5, 2026; it may not include every entry.

Karila v. EF Education First International, Ltd. and Go Ahead Vacations, Inc. (D. Mass. No. 1:21-cv-10643, filed April 16, 2021). A putative class action under Mass. Gen. L. c. 93A about a tour postponed because of COVID-19. In its March 3, 2022 order the court recounted the complaint's allegations (accepted as true for the motion): the plaintiff paid a $300 deposit in November 2019, paid $3,799 in total for a spring 2020 tour of Portugal, Spain and Morocco, was moved to a May 2020 departure that was postponed on March 27, 2020, and was offered a refund less the $300 deposit, which she accepted. The defendants answered, as the order records, that the travel contract provides a voucher for future travel less non-refundable fees when a tour is postponed or cancelled for public-health reasons. The court allowed the motion to dismiss as to the claim based on 940 C.M.R. 15.04 and denied it as to all other grounds, including the claim based on 15.06, and held that the Airline Deregulation Act did not preempt the 15.06 claim. No class was certified. On September 22, 2023 the parties filed a stipulation of dismissal: claims made by the plaintiff personally were dismissed with prejudice, claims on behalf of a putative class were not, and each side bore its own fees and costs.

Acree v. EF Education First, Inc. and Go Ahead Vacations, Inc. (M.D. Fla. No. 8:18-cv-02010, filed August 15, 2018). The docket lists the cause as "Restrictions on Use of Telephone Equipment". On November 21, 2018 the court dismissed the case without prejudice on a stipulation of dismissal, each party to bear its own fees and costs. The docket text read does not describe the allegations further.

Botto v. EF World Journeys, Inc. (C.D. Cal. No. 2:26-cv-01042, filed February 2, 2026). A voluntary dismissal under Fed. R. Civ. P. 41(a)(1) was filed on March 24, 2026. The docket entries read do not state the plaintiff's claims.

The Release & Agreement in the company's Terms selects Massachusetts law and courts. The only arbitration clause found in the company's Terms pages covers disputes about SMS/MMS text messages (JAMS, individual basis), per the Terms & conditions addendum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which company is behind EF Go Ahead Tours?

The company's Terms say EF Go Ahead tours are operated outside the U.S. by EF World Journeys International, Ltd., Selnaustrasse 30, 8001 Zurich, Switzerland, and that EF World Journeys, Inc. (f/k/a Go Ahead Vacations, Inc.), Two Education Circle, Cambridge, MA, acts only as a marketing service provider for that company and is not its agent. The Terms call the two together EF Go Ahead Tours. The About page says the company is part of EF Education First.

How do I cancel an EF Go Ahead Tours booking?

The help-center article "Canceling your tour" says: "Cancellations must be processed over the phone for account security purposes." (and, more broadly, that "most reservation changes" are handled by phone). It gives 1-617-202-2116 for U.S. travelers and 1-800-754-5066 for Canadian travelers. Group Members are directed to their Group Coordinator. The article also describes rebooking, which can be started through the online account, and a 90-day hold of the account as alternatives. Keep a record of the date and time of the call and ask for written confirmation of the cancellation date.

How long do I have to get a full refund after booking?

The company's pages state this two ways. The help center says 30 days from booking for AutoPay or paid-in-full travelers and 72 hours for all others. The Terms say the reservation fee is fully refundable within 72 hours of booking or by the Tour Finalization Date, whichever is sooner (most tours finalize 70 days before departure; some 90). After the window, cancellation fees apply.

What are the cancellation fees?

Per the Terms, for European land tours the fee is $300 per person at 71 or more days before departure, then the greater of $1,000 or 30 percent of total tour cost at 70-46 days, the greater of $1,000 or 50 percent at 45-8 days, and 100 percent at 7-0 days. For non-European land tours the first tier is $450. Other tour types and Rwanda tours have separate schedules, and the help center's Rwanda figures differ from the Terms. Fees include the non-refundable reservation fee.

What does AnyReason Protection do, and is travel protection refundable?

The company describes AnyReason Protection ($75) as a non-insurance cancellation fee waiver: if you cancel up to 24 hours before departure it provides a future travel voucher for the value of your cancellation fees, valid for one year and not redeemable for cash. The Travel Protection plans are insured through United States Fire Insurance Company, and the Terms say they become non-refundable after departure, a claim, or 10 days after purchase. For coverage questions the Terms name Risk Strategies, 877-974-7462 ext. 321.

What happens if EF Go Ahead Tours cancels or postpones my tour?

The Terms say that for low enrollment, up to the Tour Finalization Date, you may pick another tour or date or "elect a refund of all funds paid to-date". For a cancellation or postponement caused by a Force Majeure Event, the Terms say no refunds are given and travelers receive a future travel voucher for all money paid less the cost of any travel protection plan. In Karila, the court recorded allegations and the defendants' contrary position on a COVID-19 postponement; the case ended without a ruling on those merits.

Where can I send a complaint about EF Go Ahead Tours?

The company's help center takes requests through a web form and phone lines (1-800-597-0350 for an existing booking). BBB accepts complaints on its profile for EF Go Ahead Tours, Cambridge, MA. The Massachusetts Attorney General's 2020 press release lists 617-727-8400 for consumer protection complaints; the Terms select Massachusetts law. You can also dispute a charge with your card issuer under its own rules.

Do the EF Go Ahead Tours terms require arbitration?

The Release & Agreement in the Terms says disputes related to the tour are governed by Massachusetts law and resolved "solely and exclusively in courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts". The only arbitration clause found in the company's Terms pages applies to disputes about SMS/MMS text messages, under JAMS rules and on an individual basis, per the Terms & conditions addendum.

Has EF Go Ahead Tours been sued?

CourtListener dockets show Karila (D. Mass., filed 2021; stipulation of dismissal filed September 22, 2023, with the plaintiff's personal claims dismissed with prejudice), Acree (M.D. Fla., filed 2018; dismissed without prejudice November 21, 2018) and Botto v. EF World Journeys, Inc. (C.D. Cal., filed February 2, 2026; voluntary dismissal filed March 24, 2026). Details and limits of what the dockets show are in the litigation section.
