BeenVerified: cancel a subscription, understand a charge, get a refund, opt out, complain (checked October 16, 2026)

Pages opened on October 16, 2026: BeenVerified's Billing and Cancellation FAQ, Billing Descriptor page, Refund Policy, Contact Us page, FCRA page, Consumer Terms of Service (last updated October 23, 2025) and Privacy Policy (last updated 09/09/2026), plus BBB, Trustpilot and the California data broker registry.

1. Cancel. The Billing and Cancellation FAQ gives these routes: log in, open “My Account”, and under “Edit My Account Information” select “Cancel My Account”; or chat with an agent; or use the Contact Us page, select “Cancel Account” and give the 9-digit membership ID; or email [email protected] with the membership ID. If you are not logged in, the Billing FAQ says “you can call our customer service line anytime at 1-844-823-2869” with the membership ID ready, while the Contact Us page says the toll-free line is “Available Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm EST”; the company’s two pages give different availability. The Terms (section 19) list the same channels and say online, email and Contact Us requests may be submitted 24 hours a day. The FAQ says the membership “will be automatically renewed to the same term until you cancel” and that after cancelling you keep the remaining reports for the rest of the paid term. Subscriptions bought through the iOS or Android app are managed by Apple or Google, and the FAQ says they must be cancelled in the Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings.

2. Refunds. The Refund Policy says to email [email protected] with the member ID or sign-up email, that requests are handled “case-by-case”, and that a refund may take up to 10 days to post depending on the bank. The Terms (section 20) say requests are considered case by case, that “Where We offer refunds, You are typically limited to receipt of a single refund per subscription”, and that a refund “may take up to thirty days to appear”. The two pages give different posting times and both are the company’s own text. For charges made through the Apple App Store or Google Play the Refund Policy says to ask Apple or Google. The Terms also say cancellation “does not affect charges that have already been incurred” for the current subscription period. This page does not predict how an individual request will be handled.

3. Reading a card statement. The company’s Billing Descriptor page says a charge may appear as BVD*BeenVerified.com, BVC*BeenVerified.com, BV*BeenVerified.com, BEENVERIFIED INC. or BeenVerified.com. The Billing FAQ also says a pending amount after a sign-up that did not complete is an authorization that “will automatically drop off” within a few business days, and that a report is charged “regardless of whether your search subject has a criminal record or not”. The text of the Terms page searched on October 16, 2026 contains no match for “free trial”, so trial terms, if any are offered, are those shown on the sign-up page you used. A card issuer’s dispute process is a separate route from the company’s.

4. Remove a listing. BeenVerified’s footer links an “Opt Out” page (opened October 16, 2026). In the company’s words, you search its database with the form on the page, select the record to opt out, and it will “then send you a verification email”; after you confirm, it sends a second email confirming the opt-out. It says “you never have to pay for the removal of your own record” and that “in most cases, this will take 24 hours to take effect”. Caveats the company states: the online process removes only one record (“If you find more than one record about you ... please contact us at [email protected]”); a new record from a data partner that it cannot match to the old one may appear and should be reported to the same address; “your name might appear in search results for the other search services available through BeenVerified even after you opt-out of People Search”; and it can remove records “only from our own site”, not from other websites. Daniel’s Law covered persons may email [email protected] instead of using the automated opt-out. The Terms say “If You wish to remove Your personal information from the Site, please visit the Opt-out page” and, separately, that “Any requests to remove Your information from BeenVerified’s People Search results will be governed by the procedures described in the Privacy Policy”. The Privacy Policy (section 18.3) adds that opt-out, access or deletion requests may be submitted “by filling out our online request form, emailing us at [email protected]”, or by phone or post. The California data broker registry entry (filed under “BeenVerified, LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates”) gives https://www.beenverified.com/svc/optout/search/comprehensive_optouts as the page for exercising California privacy rights.

4a. California residents: DROP. The California Privacy Protection Agency’s data broker page (cppa.ca.gov/data_brokers/, opened October 16, 2026) says that “beginning August 1, 2026, data brokers must access the ‘accessible deletion mechanism’ at least once every 45 days and process consumer deletion requests, subject to limited exceptions”, and that the mechanism lets a consumer, “through a single verifiable request”, direct every data broker holding personal information about them to delete it. That is the Agency’s description of the Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP); this page does not state how BeenVerified has handled DROP requests.

5. Outside routes. The Terms contain a mandatory individual-arbitration clause with a class-action waiver and say they are governed by New York law; read them before choosing a route. Consumers can also file a BBB complaint and report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov (the site says it takes reports of “fraud, scams, and bad business practices”), or contact their state attorney general. BeenVerified is not a lender or bank, so the CFPB’s consumer-complaint database is not a normal route for a BeenVerified subscription; a card dispute goes to the card issuer.

Who is BeenVerified: entity, owner group, what it sells, registry filing

The Terms of Service are an agreement with BeenVerified, LLC; the Privacy Policy says the website is provided by The Lifetime Value Co. LLC “acting through BeenVerified, LLC”. BBB lists BeenVerified, LLC as a limited liability company at 48 W 38th St Fl 8, New York, NY 10018 (BBB labels it “Headquarters”; the same address is on the California data broker registry filing) and gives business start July 25, 2008, BBB file opened June 23, 2009 and incorporation December 3, 2020 in its page data. The company’s About page says it was “Founded in 2007” and has “over 1.5 million+ subscribers”; these are the company’s own statements and were not independently checked.

What it does (company statements). BeenVerified says its reports draw “from billions of public records across federal, state, and county sources, which includes court records, property data, contact information, criminal records, and more”, and that a subscription includes people, vehicle, phone, address, email, social-media, unclaimed-money and business searches. Customer care is listed as 1-844-823-2869, Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm Eastern, with chat “available 24 hours a day through our AI assistant”.

Not a consumer reporting agency (company statement). The company’s FCRA page says “BeenVerified is not a consumer reporting agency” and lists uses it prohibits, including employment screening, tenant screening, credit or insurance decisions and educational qualification. Its California registry filing answers “No” to being regulated by the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. This page makes no finding on that question.

Ownership and sister sites. In a September 2026 federal suit (see Lawsuits) the corporate-disclosure statements name The Lifetime Value Co. LLC as corporate parent of BeenVerified, LLC, and LTV Intermediate Co. LLC as parent of The Lifetime Value Co. LLC. The same filings name BeenVerified, LLC as the corporate parent of NeighborWho, LLC, NumberGuru, LLC and PeopleLooker, LLC, and name The Lifetime Value Co. LLC (not BeenVerified, LLC) as corporate parent of Internet Utility Group, LLC, ReversePhone, LLC, MoneyBot5000, LLC and PeopleSmart, LLC, which are therefore sister companies in the same group. The case is assigned to Judge Sarala V. Nagala. BBB lists Bumper, LLC and Ownerly, LLC as related businesses, and the registry filing lists beenverified.com, peoplelooker.com, numberguru.com, ownerly.com, neighborwho.com, peoplesmart.com, bumper.com, freephonetracer.com, emailfinder.com, moneybot5000.com, reversephone.com, wingmate.com and famfinder.com as its websites.

Not to be confused with. Spokeo, Inc. is a separate people-search company (see its own profile). Spokeo and BeenVerified are co-plaintiffs on the same 2026 Connecticut docket. Co-plaintiff status does not show common ownership: the disclosure statement filed for Spokeo, Inc. names no parent, and the BeenVerified entities name the Lifetime Value Co. group. Intelius, Instant Checkmate, Truthfinder and Control Group Media Company, other co-plaintiffs, name different corporate parents (PubRec Holdings, Inc. and PCHI Parent, Inc.). This profile makes no statement that these companies are related to BeenVerified beyond what the filings say.

Registry statements. The California Privacy Protection Agency data broker registry lists BeenVerified, LLC and its subsidiaries and affiliates as a registered data broker (a registration, not an enforcement action). In that filing the company reports, for 2024, 31,905 requests to delete (19,791 complied in whole, 11,512 complied in part, 602 denied; median 3 days to respond) and 657,801 requests to opt out of sale or sharing (378,175 complied in whole, 168,625 complied in part, 111,001 denied; median 10 days). These are the company’s own self-reported figures; the registry does not define “complied in part” and they are not compared here with complaints from other sources.

Regulators. On October 16, 2026 a CFPB company lookup for “beenverified” returned an empty list. The FTC cases-and-proceedings page, when searched for “BeenVerified” that day, returned an unfiltered list of 6,119 entries whose first page showed no BeenVerified entry, so that query does not support a statement about FTC matters. No enforcement action naming BeenVerified was identified in the sources opened that day. These are scoped checks, not a statement about every agency or state.

Complaint record: our archive, BBB and Trustpilot as displayed on October 16, 2026

usacomplaints.com archive. We link 40 published posts dated 2009 to 2013 whose offender field names BeenVerified or a variant (Beenverified.com, Been Verified, BeenVerified.com, Beenvarified, Being verified.com). They were written by individual visitors, are unverified, and describe the service as it was in those years. By a simple keyword match (a post can match several groups): 17 mention a free trial; 20 mention results described as inaccurate, false or out of date; 14 mention a charge, billing or a debit; 14 mention cancelling; 10 mention a refund or getting money back; 8 mention privacy, removing information or identity. One further post whose offender field matched was not linked because its text is a general essay on online dating and age-verification sites and not a complaint about BeenVerified.

BBB. BBB profile for BeenVerified, LLC, New York, NY, as displayed on October 16, 2026: not BBB Accredited, rating B+ with the reason “Business has failed to resolve underlying cause(s) of a pattern of complaints”; 525 complaints in the last 3 years and 150 in the last 12 months; customer-review average 2.1 of 5 stars from 207 customer reviews. BBB also shows an alert titled “Pattern of Complaints” on the rendered profile (the page data spells the title “Pattern of Complaint”). It says BBB files indicate a “pattern” concerning BeenVerified’s “information publishing and customer service practices”, that many consumers describe a difficult process and unsatisfactory results in trying to opt out, that BBB asked for the company’s voluntary cooperation in April 2019, and that as of 4/05/2019 BeenVerified told BBB it was working to improve the language highlighting its monthly subscription options and sign-up flows and to increase opt-out mechanisms. BBB adds that, as of January 2025, complaints still allege surprise charges from an automatic conversion to a paid subscription or a service the consumer says they did not sign up for, and a lack of cooperation with opt-outs and cancellation or refund requests. This is BBB’s description of complaints it received; BBB states that it does not verify the information.

Trustpilot. Page ‘BeenVerified.com’ as displayed on October 16, 2026: 3,171 reviews, score 3.5, profile claimed since September 2023 and labelled “Paid Trustpilot subscription”, 712 reviews in the last 12 months. The page says the company invites customers to review and “Replied to 100% of negative reviews”. The star distribution shown is 43 percent five-star and 31 percent one-star; this is Trustpilot’s display, not a measure of our own.

Lawsuits: 2026 Connecticut suit, Atlas (Daniel's Law) and other dockets

Spokeo, Inc. et al. v. Tong (D. Conn. No. 3:26-cv-01510). Filed September 17, 2026 against Connecticut Attorney General William M. Tong by 14 plaintiffs, including BeenVerified, LLC, The Lifetime Value Co. LLC, Spokeo, Inc., Intelius, LLC, Instant Checkmate, LLC and Truthfinder, LLC. A motion for preliminary injunction was filed September 18, 2026. A September 25 order set the defendant’s response to the complaint and to that motion for October 13, 2026; later docket entries show an extension motion (October 6), an order on it (October 7) and an October 8 entry resetting motion deadlines and the answer deadline. The free CourtListener entry text, last updated October 8, 2026, does not state the claims or the new dates; CourtListener classifies the case as Cause 42:1983 Civil Rights Act, Nature of Suit 950 Constitutional - State Statute. No ruling was shown as of October 16, 2026.

Atlas Data Privacy Corporation v. The Lifetime Value Co. LLC et al. (D.N.J. No. 1:24-cv-04850). This federal docket opened on April 11, 2024, when the defendants (The Lifetime Value Co. LLC, BeenVerified, Inc., BeenVerified, LLC, NeighborWho LLC, The NumberGuru LLC, PeopleLooker LLC, PeopleSmart LLC, Ownerly, LLC) filed a notice of removal from the Superior Court of New Jersey (MER-L-272-24); April 11 is the removal date, not the date the case was first filed. Judge Harvey Bartle (E.D. Pa., sitting by designation) granted a motion to remand on November 20, 2024; the docket shows a transmittal of the remanded case to Mercer County on November 21, 2024 and a termination date of November 21, 2024. On March 18, 2025 the docket shows an “ORDER of USCA denying Petition for Leave of Appeal”. Earlier orders about a facial challenge to New Jersey’s Daniel’s Law (a June 3, 2024 order inviting amicus briefs) were vacated by orders of July 10 and July 24, 2024. The claims are not described in the docket entries read, and the case’s status in New Jersey state court was not checked.

Collins v. BeenVerified, LLC et al. (S.D.N.Y. No. 1:25-cv-02577). Filed March 28, 2025 against BeenVerified, LLC and The Lifetime Value Co. LLC (Judge Analisa Torres). The original class action complaint pleads one count under Colorado’s “Prevention of Telemarketing Fraud Act”, Colo. Rev. Stat. § 6-1-304(4)(a)(I), alleging listing a cell phone number in a directory without permission. An amended complaint was filed April 16, 2026; a July 15, 2026 order denied an earlier motion to dismiss as moot, set September 2, 2026 for a single motion to dismiss, and noted summonses issued to additional defendants named in the amended complaint. Notices of voluntary dismissal appear on the docket on July 1–2 and August 10–11, 2026; their content is not available on the free docket, so this page does not say which parties they concern. No termination date is shown. These are allegations, not findings.

Sherif v. BeenVerified, LLC (N.D. Cal. No. 4:26-cv-01506). Filed February 20, 2026. The original class complaint lists claims under the California Invasion of Privacy Act, the federal Wiretap Act, the California Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (Penal Code § 502), the California Constitution (invasion of privacy) and the Unfair Competition Law, alleging that website trackers wiretap visitors’ communications. BeenVerified, LLC filed a motion to dismiss the first amended complaint (hearing set December 10, 2026 on the docket); opposition filings are dated September 14 and 15, 2026. These are allegations; no ruling was shown when checked on October 16, 2026.

Byer v. BeenVerified, LLC (S.D.N.Y. No. 1:25-cv-07860). Filed September 22, 2025 (CourtListener: Nature of Suit 190 Contract: Other). The docket shows a notice of voluntary dismissal on September 30, 2025, an order to show cause on October 2, and a complaint entered October 6, 2025, the last filing shown; the free docket does not describe the claims, so the current status is unclear.

No settlement, consent decree or judgment involving BeenVerified was identified in the dockets checked on October 16, 2026. The check covered the Justia and CourtListener results for the name and is not a complete search of every court.

Is BeenVerified Legitimate?

BeenVerified, LLC is a limited liability company listed by BBB at 48 W 38th St Fl 8, New York, whose Terms and Privacy Policy name it (acting for The Lifetime Value Co. LLC) as the service provider. It publishes cancellation steps, a refund policy, a billing-descriptor page, a Contact page with a toll-free number, an FCRA statement and privacy-request channels (links above), and it is registered with the California Privacy Protection Agency as a data broker.

The record also shows the other side: BBB rates it B+, shows no accreditation and a “pattern of complaints” alert, 525 complaints in three years and a 2.1 of 5 customer-review average from 207 reviews; Trustpilot shows 3.5 from 3,171 reviews; and it is a defendant in several lawsuits whose allegations are not findings. BeenVerified says it is not a consumer reporting agency and that its reports must not be used for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions. No enforcement action naming it was identified in the sources opened on October 16, 2026 (see the Regulators note in the company-background section for the scope of those checks). This page offers no rating or verdict of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cancel BeenVerified?

BeenVerified’s Billing and Cancellation FAQ lists these routes: log in, open “My Account”, then “Edit My Account Information” and “Cancel My Account”; chat with an agent; use the Contact Us page and choose “Cancel Account” with the 9-digit membership ID; or email [email protected] with the membership ID. If you are not logged in, the Billing FAQ says to call 1-844-823-2869 (its text: “anytime”; the Contact Us page says Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm EST). App subscriptions are cancelled through Apple or Google Play. After cancelling, the FAQ says remaining reports stay available for the rest of the paid term.

Does BeenVerified give refunds?

The Refund Policy says refund requests go to [email protected] and are handled “case-by-case”, with posting taking up to 10 days depending on the bank. The Terms (section 20) say that where refunds are offered a subscriber is “typically limited to receipt of a single refund per subscription” and that a refund may take up to thirty days to appear. Charges made through the Apple App Store or Google Play are refunded by Apple or Google, per the Refund Policy. Whether a particular request is granted is not stated in the sources checked on October 16, 2026.

What does a BeenVerified charge look like on my card statement?

The company’s Billing Descriptor page lists BVD*BeenVerified.com, BVC*BeenVerified.com, BV*BeenVerified.com, BEENVERIFIED INC. and BeenVerified.com. Its Billing FAQ says a pending amount after a sign-up that did not go through is an authorization that drops off within a few business days, and that if a person feels a charge “was done in error or was unauthorized” they should contact [email protected]; the FAQ also suggests asking family members, saying someone associated with you may have placed the order. A card issuer’s dispute process is a separate route.

Why was I charged after I cancelled?

The Terms (section 19) say that on cancellation the membership “will not renew” and future charges are cancelled, but that cancellation “does not affect charges that have already been incurred” for the then-current subscription period. The Billing FAQ says the membership renews to the same term until cancelled. Several 2010–2012 posts in the usacomplaints.com archive describe a charge after a cancellation; those are unverified writers’ accounts. The refund route above is the company’s channel for disputing a charge.

How do I remove my information from BeenVerified?

BeenVerified's Opt Out page (opened October 16, 2026) says you search its database, select your record and confirm by email; it says removal is free, “in most cases” takes 24 hours, and covers one record per online request (more than one: [email protected]). It also says your name might still appear in its other search services after opting out of People Search. Daniel's Law covered persons may email [email protected]. California residents can also use the state's DROP deletion platform described on cppa.ca.gov. BBB's alert on the company says consumers have described difficulty opting out; that is BBB's description of complaints.

Can I use BeenVerified to screen a tenant or employee?

The company’s own FCRA page prohibits those uses: it says “BeenVerified is not a consumer reporting agency” and lists employment screening, household-worker hiring, tenant screening, educational qualification and credit or insurance decisions as restricted uses that violate its Terms. This is the company’s statement; this page makes no finding on its FCRA status.

What does BBB show for BeenVerified?

As displayed on October 16, 2026, BBB’s profile for BeenVerified, LLC shows a B+ rating, no BBB accreditation, 525 complaints in three years (150 in the last 12 months) and a customer-review average of 2.1 of 5 from 207 reviews, plus an alert titled “Pattern of Complaints”. BBB states that it does not verify the information. See the complaint-record section for the alert’s wording.

Where can I file a complaint about BeenVerified?

Start with the company: [email protected] or 1-844-823-2869 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Eastern). Outside the company, consumers can file with BBB, report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov, or contact their state attorney general; a card charge can also be disputed with the card issuer. The Terms contain an individual-arbitration clause and class-action waiver, so read them before choosing a route.
