Chase Home Finance They have my payments but won't apply them or return them

My mortgage was with Washington Mutual Home Loans which is now Chase Home Finance. I have been arguing with them for 3 weeks now about my money that was sent by my bank to them and they are now saying we are in default.
My payments are $636.65 a month. I pay my own taxes and insurance.in Sept I sent them a personal check in the amount of $1,250.00 On October 1 my bank did a electronic funds transfer to them in $1,260.00 and also $636.65. On October 7 we had somebody show up here with paperwork saying we were in default so I called the number on the paperwork.
I was told that I was 5 months behind on my payment and that the check I had sent in Sept was being sent back to me because it was not certified funds. I was also told that the electronic funds the bank sent would also be sent back because they did not consider that certified funds. When I told them that I hadn't gotten my check back yet they said it was in the mail. I then had my bank start researching the electronic funds they sent because Chase said they didn't get it.
On Oct 12th my bank called and said that Chase told them that they had sent it back on Oct 9th. When I called Chase they confirmed that the funds were in the mail back to me. For a week they kept telling me that the funds had been sent back to me and then on Oct 21 they started saying they never got it.in the mean time they are tacking on more charges saying they paid my taxes and that I owe legal charges.
This week when I call Chase I have a representative from my bank on the line and we are getting several different stories. The last is that when the funds come in like this they hang on to them for 5 days before looking at them and then it takes 30 days for the cashiering department to apply them or send them back.in the meantime as the banker told them they are holding my funds hostage and with those practices I can't get it straight. They also have some of my funds in an account that they call unapplied funds. They also say the last funds they received was in July but they keep sending my funds back or saying they are going to.
I can get this straight if they will do something with the money they have. I also shouldn't be charged fees when this could have been taken care of 3 weeks ago. Has anybody else had this problem? Is there grounds for a class action law suit? How do I stop them from taking my home when they have the money? Since they have had it for so long do they have to accept it now?
I would appreciate feed back.
