I would just like to make a formal complaint against the Nelnet education planning and financing company. I know that no one cares and nothing fruitful or righteous will happen due to this complaint, but, I will feel better for having written it.
Nelnet granted me 4 loans for college. The Army paid off these loans (I thought). I received numerous letters from Nelnet at my current address stating my $0 balance. Then I received a letter stating that my loan was paid off. I went overseas in 2003. Nelnet somehow lost my current address (even though any imbecile can go online and search my name to get my current address).
Apparently two loans from 1998 were not totally paid off and Nelnet decided that November was the date as to when I should pay them off. Well, not knowing my address, they did not know where to send me my bill.in May, they found my address and STILL did not send me a bill.
I found out about the $400 bill (now $400 debt) from a periodic credit report. My credit scores were down 200 points so I called Nelnet immediately. I was told that I owed $400 and I had to pay it immediately over the phone. I told Nelnet that I would not pay a bill over the phone because I thought my loans were taken care of and I was wary of a scam. I asked Nelnet to send me a bill or some form of legitimate paperwork to my current / SAME address.
Instead of sending me any paperwork, my loans were defaulted and forwarded to a collection agency. I feel that Nelnet's actions were unprofessional, inefficient, incompetent, negligent and mean. I attempted to speak with them numerous times to try to understand why they did not send me any paperwork and all their representatives just told me that it was my fault that they did not have my address and my fault that I did not follow up on the loans from 1998.
I have no problem taking responsibility and paying my bills. If I had received a bill from Nelnet, I would have paid it immediately.
I have been told by everyone that there is no way to reprimand this company so I am just going to mail this complaint to every possible person / company who might come into contact with Nelnet. I feel that it is my duty to warn others about using this company.
