Zelis payment, card-fee and contact questions: what to do (checked October 12, 2026)

Zelis Healthcare, LLC is a Boston-based company that processes payments and runs claims-cost and provider-network services on behalf of health plans, third-party administrators and providers. Its own Provider Networks page says: “Zelis is not an insurance carrier, third-party administrator or guarantor of payment. Providers should verify eligibility and benefits directly with the payer.” Most people who search the name received an insurer payment or remittance that came “through Zelis”, or an out-of-network or network-repricing notice that mentions it. This page lists what Zelis says about its payment options, the channels it publishes, and the public record found on October 12, 2026. It does not say what any particular letter, card or payment means.

If you are a provider paid through Zelis.

  • Zelis’s provider payments page lists three ways to be paid: “ZAPP Edge premium is a fee-based option for receiving your payments via direct deposit”; virtual credit cards (“one-time-use virtual cards that you can enter into your merchant terminal”); and paper checks (“Zelis will provide your paper checks by mail. This payment option does not include access to the payments portal.”).
  • On fees, the same page says: “Zelis charges a fee for this service. Specific fee information is disclosed at the time of enrollment.” The ZAPP Edge enrollment page says Zelis “charges a fee for access to ZAPP Edge services.” On card costs, the Terms of Use (effective 4/3/2024) say: “Interchange and other third-party fees may apply to processing Card transactions on your merchant terminal. Your agreement with your merchant processor governs Card transactions. Please contact your merchant processor or financial institution for specific fee information.”
  • The Zelis Payments Terms of Use (effective 4/3/2024) say about cards: “You are not required to accept or transact on a Card and may request other methods of payment at any time. Your use of the Virtual Credit Card represents your express consent and agreement to accept this method of payment.”
  • Published provider channels: provider payments support 877.828.8770 (Monday-Friday) and [email protected]; username resets “must be submitted through Client Services”; general inquiries 888.311.3505; Payspan for providers 877.331.7154 x1; provider networks 866.489.9444 (medical) and 888.266.3053 (dental). The phone numbers are on the Zelis support page; the email address and the username-reset rule are on the provider payments page (both opened October 12, 2026).
  • The terms give a short objection window: a provider has “sixty (60) calendar days from the date of issuance of any invoice, bill, statement or report” to raise a written objection to amounts in a statement, and disputes with Zelis about the platform go to binding arbitration under American Arbitration Association commercial rules in Boston, with a one-year claim deadline. Read the current terms before relying on a deadline.
  • The payer (your health plan or its administrator) normally decides which vendor and method it uses. Ask the payer, in writing, for a fee-free alternative and keep the claim number; a complaint about a plan can also go to your state insurance department.

New York virtual card rule. New York’s Chapter 647 of 2025 (Assembly bill A3986-A, “Signed by Governor,” December 19, 2025) says an insurer may pay a claim by a credit card, virtual credit card or electronic funds transfer method that “imposes on the provider a specifically identified fee or similar dedicated charge” if, in advance, the insurer notifies the provider of the potential fees, offers an alternative payment method that does not impose fees, and the provider or its designee elects the fee-bearing method; the election stays in effect until the provider notifies the insurer in writing of a change, and an insurer that contracts with a vendor to process payments must require the vendor to comply. The statute applies to insurers and plans and does not name Zelis. The bill text says it takes effect on the 180th day after becoming law and applies to policies and contracts issued, renewed, modified, altered or amended on and after that date.

If you are a patient. Zelis does not decide what a plan covers. Questions about benefits, balances or an explanation of benefits go to your plan or the provider’s billing office; Zelis publishes a privacy office address ([email protected]) for privacy questions. Zelis’s privacy policy also says it “will NEVER send you an email requesting you to verify credit card or bank information” and gives a fraud hotline, 1 (833) 738-2929, for suspected fraud affecting Zelis or its clients.

Names you may see. Zelis’s support page groups several portals under its name, including the Provider Payments Portal, the Payspan Payments Portal, a Stratose “Zelis Client Portal” and payer-side products (Network360, ZAPP portal, Payer Compass). BBB lists separate files for Zelis Payments, LLC (St. Petersburg, FL), Zelis Healthcare Corp (Bedminster, NJ) and Zelis Cost Management (Atlanta, GA; alternate name “Stratose/Qualident Dental Network”). A federal docket names “Zelis Network Solutions, LLC.”

Ownership and leadership. The About and Leadership pages show Parthenon Capital, Bain Capital and Mubadala logos under “Zelis Investors”; the pages do not state ownership percentages. The Leadership page refers to “Zelis CEO Amanda Eisel,” and the press room lists a September 14, 2026 announcement that Jim Young was appointed Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, succeeding Brian Gladden.

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot, ComplaintsBoard, our archive (as displayed October 12, 2026)

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Zelis and is it an insurance company?

Zelis Healthcare, LLC (Boston, Massachusetts per its Business Associate Agreement) provides payment, claims-cost and provider-network services to health plans and providers. Its Provider Networks page says it is “not an insurance carrier, third-party administrator or guarantor of payment.” Checked October 12, 2026.

Why did I receive a Zelis virtual credit card instead of a check?

Zelis says virtual cards are one of its payment options for provider claim payments from health plans. Its Terms of Use state that a provider is “not required to accept or transact on a Card and may request other methods of payment at any time.” Which method a plan uses is set up between the plan, Zelis and the provider (often at enrollment); BBB complaints describe providers continuing to receive cards after asking for checks. Checked October 12, 2026.

Does Zelis charge providers a fee?

Zelis says it “charges a fee for this service” (the payments portal) and that “Specific fee information is disclosed at the time of enrollment”; its page calls ZAPP Edge premium “a fee-based option.” It does not publish a rate on the pages opened October 12, 2026. On card costs, the Terms of Use (effective 4/3/2024) say: “Interchange and other third-party fees may apply to processing Card transactions on your merchant terminal. Your agreement with your merchant processor governs Card transactions.”

How do I contact Zelis about a payment?

Zelis’s support page lists provider payments support at 877.828.8770 (Monday-Friday), general inquiries at 888.311.3505, and Payspan for providers at 877.331.7154 x1. The provider payments page gives [email protected] and says “all username reset requests must be submitted through Client Services.” Numbers and address as published on October 12, 2026.

Can I switch from virtual cards to paper checks or direct deposit?

Zelis lists checks (“Zelis will provide your paper checks by mail”), card and direct-deposit options and says to call 855.496.1571 or fill in the provider enrollment form to choose. Zelis’s page also says of checks: “This payment option does not include access to the payments portal,” so download any remittance data you need before switching. Complainants on BBB describe long waits and repeated requests, so keep a written record of each request. The plan that sends the payment may control the method; ask it as well.

What does New York’s virtual credit card law say?

Chapter 647 of 2025 (Assembly bill A3986-A, signed December 19, 2025) says an insurer may pay a claim by a credit card, virtual card or EFT method that imposes on the provider “a specifically identified fee or similar dedicated charge” if, in advance, the insurer notifies the provider of the potential fees, offers an alternative method without fees, and the provider or its designee elects the fee-bearing method; the insurer must require its payment vendor to comply. The bill text says it takes effect on the 180th day after becoming law and applies to policies and contracts issued, renewed, modified, altered or amended on and after that date. The law applies to insurers and plans and does not name Zelis.

Has Zelis been sued?

CourtListener dockets name Zelis companies as parties in cases brought by health systems and other companies, for example Dignity Health v. Zelis Healthcare, LLC (D. Nev., breach of contract per the docket; dismissed with prejudice September 14, 2026 after a settlement agreement entry) and TRPN Direct Pay Inc. v. Zelis Network Solutions, LLC (D. Nev., RICO cause listed, two motions to dismiss with no ruling on the docket viewed). Claims are allegations. Checked October 12, 2026.
