WellMed: how to complain, pay a bill, get records and reach the right agency (checked October 5, 2026)

This section uses WellMed's own pages, the public record and the BBB profile, all opened on October 5, 2026. No posts in this site's archive were linked to WellMed Medical Management as of October 5, 2026, so this page shows no count of "our complaints".

Complaints about care or a clinician. WellMed's Complaints page says: "Although we encourage you to bring your concerns directly to us, you always have the right to take any complaint to the below." It lists the Texas Department of State Health Services (1-888-973-0022, 1100 W. 49th Street, Austin, TX 78756-3199) and the Florida Department of Health (1-850-245-4444, 4052 Bald Cypress Way, Bin C75, Tallahassee, FL 32399-3260). The same page carries a notice that complaints about physicians and other Texas Medical Board licensees "may be reported for investigation" to the Texas Medical Board, Attention: Investigations, 1801 Congress Avenue, Suite 9.200, P.O. Box 2018, Austin, Texas 78768-2018, and that assistance in filing is available at 1-800-201-9353.

Medicare questions and complaints. Medicare.gov's "Talk to Someone" page lists 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048) and says State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs) help people with Medicare with items that include filing a complaint or an appeal.

Civil-rights complaints. WellMed's nondiscrimination notice says a complaint can be sent to the Optum Civil Rights Coordinator, 1 Optum Circle, Eden Prairie, MN 55344, that "If you need help filing a complaint, call the toll-free number 1-888-445-8745 (TTY 711)", and that a civil-rights complaint can also be filed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights (ocrportal.hhs.gov/ocr/portal/lobby.jsf).

Complaint or appeal? Medicare.gov's complaints page says to file an appeal if "You have an issue with a plans' refusal to cover a service, supply, or prescription" or "You got a bill for a claim you already submitted", and, for customer-service or specialist-access problems with a Medicare health or drug plan, to use the Medicare Complaint Form or the instructions in the plan's membership materials. A complaint to WellMed or a state agency is not the same as an appeal to a health plan.

Referrals and prior authorization. A UnitedHealthcare provider-facing FAQ for 2026 Medicare Advantage in Florida says WellMed "is delegated to manage and process all referrals, notification/prior authorization requests and claims" for members assigned to a WellMed primary-care physician, that from January 1, 2026 specialists treating members in UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage HMO and HMO-POS plans need a referral from the member's PCP (with a listed set of exceptions), and that further information on 2026 referral requirements for members with a WellMed PCP is at eprg.wellmed.net. The document is written for providers and for Florida; check your own plan materials for what applies to you.

Paying or questioning a bill. WellMed's bill-pay page says to "refer to the date and provider listed on your billing statement" and lists three providers: WellMed, Optum, and Medical Clinic of North Texas, PLLC. For WellMed, services received on or after September 1, 2024 can be paid at healowpay.com, by phone at 866-582-9916 (credit card), or by check payable to WellMed mailed to WellMed Medical Group PA, PO Box 847109, Dallas, TX 75284-7109; the page gives the same number for billing questions. The Optum and Medical Clinic of North Texas payment pages were not opened for this page.

Medical records. WellMed's records page says requests can be made online through Verisma (patient, patient representative or attorney options), or by mail, fax or email using its authorization form: WellMed, 6363 N Hwy 161 Suite 100, Irving, TX 75038, Attn: Health Information Management Department; fax 817-514-7879; [email protected]. The page notes that email is not a secure method of communication. It says records for online Verisma requests "are usually available within 3 to 5 business days after the request has been submitted", gives Verisma customer service at 1-866-993-2184 for requests sent by mail, fax or email, and answers "Will I be charged a fee for my medical records?" with "No".

Appointments and general contact. The Contact page gives 1-866-323-3601 for scheduling, says requests submitted through its form are typically answered within 48 hours, lists support staff at 1-877-370-8115 (Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST) and says "If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please dial 911."

If your doctor leaves WellMed. WellMed's Notices page lists notices about individual clinicians and clinics; as read on October 5, 2026 it showed 22 dated entries between July 7 and October 2, 2026, so check the page for your own clinician or location. One dated October 2, 2026 states that, effective November 2, 2026, a named physician "will no longer be providing care at WellMed," that patients may continue care at a nearby WellMed clinic, and that patients can request their records by the QR code or through wellmedhealthcare.com.

Which insurance plans. WellMed's plans page says "Plans accepted vary by doctor's office/clinic, service area and county" and asks patients to contact their insurer before an appointment because some plans "offer a level of coverage that could result in out-of-pocket costs." As displayed on October 5, 2026, its Texas regional lists show Original Medicare and UnitedHealthcare in each region, WellCare and HealthSpring in some, and two State of Texas group PPOs; its Florida regional lists include Humana among other plans.

Federal government matters that mention WellMed (status as of October 5, 2026)

Poehling / United States v. UnitedHealth Group (C.D. Cal., No. 2:16-cv-08697). This is a False Claims Act case about Medicare Advantage risk-adjustment payments that began as a whistleblower suit. Because WellMed appears in headlines about it, the record is set out exactly. A law-firm blog for the whistleblower's lawyers (February 16, 2017) said the Department of Justice joined the whistleblower's allegations against UnitedHealth and "WellMed Medical Management," and trade press carried the same headline. The Department of Justice's own complaint-in-partial-intervention (Doc. 114, filed May 16, 2017) names UnitedHealth Group entities and the Medicare Advantage organizations in its Exhibit 1; in the caption and Exhibit 1 checked, WellMed Medical Management, Inc. is not listed as a defendant. The complaint alleges that UnitedHealth acquired WellMed Medical Management, Inc. in January 2011, describes WellMed as a provider group whose diagnosis coding UnitedHealth audited, and quotes an internal 2012 audit summary that "70% of the codes [WellMed] indicated were properly documented actually were not supported in the medical record." These are the government's allegations; the defendants have moved for summary judgment in the case.

Status. On the docket, the Special Master filed a Report and Recommendation on the summary-judgment motions on March 3, 2025 (Dkt. 631); the United States moved for review on April 2, 2025 (Dkt. 636); the judge held a hearing on November 19, 2025 and took that motion and a defense motion to strike under submission (Dkt. 668). The docket entries read through September 10, 2026 (Dkt. 677) show no ruling on them. This page does not state what the Special Master recommended.

Other government actions. No Texas or Florida attorney-general action, Texas Department of Insurance order, or CMS administrative action naming WellMed Medical Management was identified in the web searches run on October 5, 2026; those agencies' enforcement databases were not searched directly, so this is not a finding that none exists.

Company background: WellMed, UnitedHealth Group and Optum

Who WellMed is. WellMed Medical Management, Inc. is a Texas corporation. UnitedHealth Group's Form 10-K for 2024 (Exhibit 21.1, as of December 31, 2024) listed it among UnitedHealth Group Incorporated's subsidiaries, alongside WellMed Medical Management of Florida, Inc. UnitedHealth's Exhibit 21.1 to its Form 10-K for 2025 is limited to "significant subsidiaries" and does not list WellMed, so the 2024 exhibit is cited here as a dated statement and not as proof of the current ownership structure. WellMed says it was "founded in 1990 by Dr. George M. Rapier III" as "a single clinic in San Antonio, Texas," and that it now cares for "over 1 million older adults across more than 16,000 offices in Texas and Florida" (company statements). It describes WellMed Medical Management Inc. as a "capitated, full-risk" management services organization with an HMO structure, and its clinics as a physician-led primary-care model for people on Medicare.

Ownership and Optum. WellMed's pages refer to Optum: its nondiscrimination notice covers "WellMed (all affiliated entities and Optum Florida)," its bill-pay page lists Optum as a billing provider, and its online Terms tell readers to contact a uhg.com email address if a dispute is with Optum. The Terms of Use (effective July 28, 2025) describe the rules for using the online services of WellMed Medical Group, P.A. and its affiliates and apply Minnesota law.

Newest corporate event. Healthcare Finance News reported on September 11, 2026 that UnitedHealth Group sold an ownership interest in some of its Florida WellMed clinics to private-equity firm TPG, that the clinics stay in Optum's network, and that UnitedHealth retains an ownership interest; it quotes the Optum Health CEO as saying "We're not exiting Florida." So for some Florida clinics the reported arrangement is shared ownership, with the clinics remaining in Optum's network. The report concerns Florida clinics; this page did not find a similar transaction for Texas.

Name check. Wellmedr (wellmedr.com) is an online telehealth service that its own site attributes to Wellmedr LLC. No link between Wellmedr LLC and WellMed Medical Management was found on either company's pages checked, and the two should not be confused.

Posts on this site. No approved posts from this site's archive are linked to WellMed Medical Management as of October 5, 2026.

Better Business Bureau (as displayed on October 5, 2026). The BBB profile for WellMed, 1521 S Staples St, Corpus Christi, TX (BBB Heart of Texas) says the business is not BBB Accredited and shows a rating of F, with the stated reason "Failure to respond to 5 complaint(s) filed against business." BBB shows 5 total complaints in the last 3 years and 3 closed in the last 12 months, and four complaints are displayed, all with status "Unanswered": Sales and Advertising Issues (August 13, 2026), Product Issues (November 23, 2025), Customer Service Issues (March 19, 2025) and Service or Repair Issues (November 19, 2024). BBB shows 1.3 out of 5 from an average of 33 customer reviews. BBB's raw profile data lists the business start as May 24, 1990, incorporation as April 29, 1996 and the BBB file opened June 9, 2009; alternate names are WellMed Medical Group, P.A. and WellMed Medical Management, Inc. BBB says the reviews on this profile cover WellMed's headquarters and corporate-owned locations.

Items that may not concern the clinics. The August 13, 2026 complaint concerns GLP-1 medication pricing and repeated calls, and one of the ten most recent reviews displayed names Wellmedr, a differently named telehealth business; WellMed's own pages read for this profile do not describe a GLP-1 weight-loss program. BBB's own complaint text "might not represent all complaints filed with BBB."

Trustpilot. On October 5, 2026 no Trustpilot business page was found at trustpilot.com/review/wellmedhealthcare.com or trustpilot.com/review/wellmed.net; a Trustpilot search for "wellmed" listed Wellmedr (wellmedr.com), a different business. These BBB figures are not combined with any other source.

Lawsuits naming WellMed (status as of October 5, 2026)

Court records were read on CourtListener on October 5, 2026. Everything below is an allegation or a procedural step, not a finding about WellMed's care.

Valdez and Hack v. WellMed Medical Management, Inc. and UnitedHealth Group, Inc. (W.D. Tex., No. 5:25-cv-00438-XR). Filed April 21, 2025 by two individuals who say they "suffered adverse employment actions because they reported illegal, unlawful, and fraudulent use of federal funds"; the complaint alleges "kickbacks, fraudulent billing practices, and bid manipulation." On November 24, 2025 the court denied WellMed's motion to dismiss and granted in part and denied in part UnitedHealth Group's, dismissing the retaliation claim against UnitedHealth Group without prejudice; WellMed filed an answer with a jury demand on December 8, 2025. A January 19, 2026 scheduling order set discovery to close October 9, 2026 and jury selection for April 5, 2027. The docket (read October 5, 2026) shows an order on a motion to extend scheduling-order deadlines on August 13, 2026 whose terms were not read, so the current deadlines are not stated here; it also shows a discovery hearing on September 10, an order on a motion to compel on September 16, an attorney-fees motion on September 18 with an order on it on September 21, and a filing titled "Extension of Time to Complete Discovery" on October 2, 2026 (Dkt. 54).

United States ex rel. Traver v. Gonzaba Health Systems Associates PA and others, including WellMed Medical Management Inc. and UnitedHealth Group Inc. (W.D. Tex., No. 5:18-cv-00653-JKP). A False Claims Act whistleblower suit filed June 28, 2018 alleging that the defendants submitted or caused false claims; the United States declined to intervene on January 21, 2025. On April 6, 2026 the court granted all defendants' motions to dismiss, finding the Third Amended Complaint did not plead fraud with the particularity Federal Rule 9(b) requires, and that the relator had "ample opportunity" to amend. Judgment was entered April 8, 2026 and a notice of appeal was filed May 6, 2026. On August 3, 2026 the district docket shows "USCA Judgment/Mandate" (Dkt. 134), a "Letter of Transmittal from USCA" (Dkt. 135) and an entry "Appeal Reinstated"; the text of those entries could not be read, so the appeal's outcome is not stated here.

A CourtListener caption search for "WellMed" on October 5, 2026 also returned employment-discrimination and commercial-dispute dockets; they are not summarised here. See the government-matters section for the Poehling case, in which WellMed Medical Management, Inc. is not a captioned defendant.

Is WellMed Legitimate?

UnitedHealth Group's Form 10-K for 2024 (Exhibit 21.1, as of December 31, 2024) listed WellMed Medical Management, Inc. among its subsidiaries, and WellMed's site lists clinics and clinicians in Texas and Florida through a clinic finder. Its Complaints page names the Texas Medical Board, the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Florida Department of Health as places to take complaints, and the BBB profile shows the ratings and complaint figures in the complaint-record section above, as displayed on October 5, 2026. Documented court matters are limited to the cases listed above and are allegations or procedural steps. Independent checks that readers can make themselves: the Texas Medical Board or Florida Department of Health licensing lookups for an individual clinician, and the court dockets cited on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I file a complaint about WellMed?

WellMed's Complaints page says patients are encouraged to bring concerns directly to WellMed and "always have the right to take any complaint to" the Texas Department of State Health Services (1-888-973-0022) or the Florida Department of Health (1-850-245-4444). It also carries the Texas Medical Board notice for complaints about physicians and other board licensees (1-800-201-9353 for filing assistance). For Medicare coverage or billing questions, Medicare.gov lists 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

Who owns WellMed, and what is Optum's role?

UnitedHealth Group's Form 10-K for 2024 (Exhibit 21.1) listed WellMed Medical Management, Inc. (Texas) and WellMed Medical Management of Florida, Inc. among UnitedHealth Group Incorporated's subsidiaries as of December 31, 2024; the Exhibit 21.1 to the 2025 Form 10-K lists only significant subsidiaries and does not name WellMed. WellMed's own pages refer to Optum, including a nondiscrimination notice that covers "WellMed (all affiliated entities and Optum Florida)". On September 11, 2026 Healthcare Finance News reported that UnitedHealth sold an ownership interest in some Florida WellMed clinics to TPG and kept an ownership interest, so the Florida arrangement is described as shared ownership.

How do I pay or ask about a WellMed bill?

WellMed's bill-pay page says to use the date and provider shown on the billing statement. For WellMed services received on or after September 1, 2024 it gives healowpay.com, a phone line (866-582-9916) and a mailing address (WellMed Medical Group PA, PO Box 847109, Dallas, TX 75284-7109), and the same number for billing questions. The page also lists Optum and Medical Clinic of North Texas, PLLC as other billing providers; those pages were not opened for this profile.

How do I get my medical records from WellMed?

WellMed's records page offers an online request through Verisma, or a signed authorization form returned by mail (WellMed, 6363 N Hwy 161 Suite 100, Irving, TX 75038, Attn: Health Information Management Department), fax (817-514-7879) or email ([email protected]). The page cautions that email is not a secure method of communication.

What happens if my WellMed doctor leaves?

WellMed posts notices about individual clinicians on its Notices page. One notice dated October 2, 2026 says that effective November 2, 2026 a named physician will no longer provide care at WellMed, that patients may continue care at a nearby WellMed clinic, and that records can be requested by QR code or through wellmedhealthcare.com. The page listed 22 dated entries from July 7 to October 2, 2026 (as read October 5), so check it for your own clinician or clinic; other notices may say different things.

Does WellMed accept my Medicare Advantage plan?

WellMed's plans page says "Plans accepted vary by doctor's office/clinic, service area and county" and to contact the clinic for a complete list and your insurer to review coverage. As displayed on October 5, 2026 the Texas regional lists show Original Medicare and UnitedHealthcare in every region, WellCare and HealthSpring in some, and two State of Texas group PPOs; the Florida lists include Humana among other plans.

Is WellMed named in lawsuits or a Justice Department case?

WellMed Medical Management, Inc. is a defendant in Valdez and Hack v. WellMed (W.D. Tex., filed April 21, 2025), a retaliation suit that is still pending, and was a defendant in the Traver whistleblower suit, which the court dismissed on April 6, 2026 (a notice of appeal was filed May 6, 2026; appellate outcome not stated). In the Justice Department's Poehling case against UnitedHealth Group, WellMed is described in the complaint but is not a captioned defendant in the documents checked. All of these are allegations or procedural steps, not findings.

Do WellMed's website terms require arbitration?

WellMed's Terms of Use (effective July 28, 2025) cover its online and mobile services and contain an arbitration agreement and class-action waiver, with Minnesota governing law. They say you may opt out within 30 days of first agreeing by letter to Attn: Legal Intake (MN-103-0400), 1 Health Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55344, and that arbitration does not apply to "disputes about the existence or extent of your health benefits or coverage." Whether the terms apply to a particular dispute about medical care is not answered on this page.

Why does the BBB page for WellMed mention Wellmedr?

As displayed on October 5, 2026, one of the ten most recent reviews on the BBB profile for WellMed names Wellmedr, and a complaint dated August 13, 2026 concerns GLP-1 medication pricing. Wellmedr (wellmedr.com) describes itself as an online telehealth service operated by Wellmedr LLC; no link to WellMed Medical Management was found on either company's pages checked.
