Wayfair returns, refunds and damaged items: what the company's pages say (as of October 14, 2026)

This page is about Wayfair, the online home-goods retailer at wayfair.com and in the Wayfair app. Wayfair's Terms of Use (last updated January 29, 2026, as displayed on October 14, 2026) name Wayfair LLC, with subsidiaries and affiliates, as the provider of the service. Below are the routes the company's own Help Center pages give for returns, refunds and damaged items, as displayed on October 14, 2026. They are the company's words, not an assessment of how any single order was handled.

Start a return. The Returns article says: "We accept returns for most items within 30 days of delivery. The item(s) must be in its original, undamaged condition." Returns are set up under My Orders in My Account: select the return option for the item, complete the online form and choose the return and refund method; a confirmation email carries instructions and any labels. The same article lists items that cannot be returned, including open-box items, clearance items, gift cards, made-to-order or personalized items, live plants and swatches, and items marked "Non-Returnable".

Fees and special categories. The article says customers are "generally responsible for the cost of return shipping", which is deducted from the refund, with exceptions for eligible in-store returns and for eligible mail-in returns by Wayfair Rewards members and Wayfair Credit Card holders who choose store credit. Delivery shipping fees or service charges collected on the order are not refunded. Large appliances can be returned "within 48 hours of delivery" if not installed and in original packaging. Mattresses carry a 100-night trial; a return to the original payment method has a fee "ranging from $49-$99" (store credit is free), excluding mattress toppers, crib mattresses, air mattresses and open-box mattresses. Items bought between November 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31, except appliances.

Refund timing. The Returns article says a refund is initiated when the item reaches the Return Center and then takes "on average 3-5 business days, though in some cases it may take up to 2 weeks". The separate Refunds FAQ says a refund that requires a return can take "up to 14 business days" to be issued, plus time for the financial institution; it lists store credit at 1 business day, debit/credit card 3-5 business days, Klarna up to 15 business days and Wayfair Financing up to 10 business days. When a refund cannot be found, the FAQ's steps are: check the amount in the refund email, check whether it went to store credit or the original payment method, check the time frame, then contact the payment provider or Wayfair. The Returns article also says that if a returned item is not received at the Returns Center, Wayfair "reserve[s] the right to reverse the refund".

Damaged, defective or wrong items. The Damaged or Defective Items article says standard items can be resolved "within 30 days of delivery" and items with Full Delivery Service within 3 days; report through My Orders ("Problem with this Order") with photos of the entire item, the packaging and the damaged part, and the article notes Wayfair may ask for the original item back. Damage after delivery from wear and tear, misuse or weather is stated to be outside the policy; items with a manufacturer warranty or protection plan can be taken up past those windows through Contact Us.

Recalls and outside routes. Wayfair's Help Center footer links a Product Recalls page, which on October 14, 2026 opened on a list organized by product category. One recall in which Wayfair itself is named as the recalling firm is CPSC's Style Life Eleven baby lounger recall of February 27, 2025 (recall number 25-704): CPSC says consumers "should stop using the recalled baby loungers immediately and contact Wayfair for information on how to dispose of the product to obtain a full refund", and gives Wayfair's recall contacts as 888-549-1625 (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday), [email protected] and wayfair.com/product_recall. CPSC listed the number of units as about 1,555 and incidents or injuries as "None reported". If a firm is not responding to a recall remedy request, CPSC provides a Recall Complaint form on the recall page. For an unresolved payment dispute, the Refunds FAQ points to the card issuer or payment provider. BBB accepts complaints about the business, and the Terms of Use do not prevent a user from bringing a dispute to a government agency (see the arbitration terms in the complaint-record section).

Wayfair Inc., the SEC registrant at 4 Copley Place, Boston, is the parent: its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 describes Wayfair LLC as "a subsidiary of Wayfair Inc.". Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot, this site's archive and arbitration terms

BBB, Trustpilot and this site's archive are separate measures and are not added together. As displayed on October 14, 2026, the BBB profile for Wayfair, LLC (Boston, headquarters) shows a letter grade of A+ and BBB Accredited status; its Complaints tab shows "5,121 total complaints in the last 3 years" and 1,385 filed in the last 12 months, and its Reviews tab shows 1.09 out of 5 stars from an average of 1,969 customer reviews (BBB says reviews are not used in the letter grade). Trustpilot's page for wayfair.com, a claimed profile since April 2017, showed 6,053 reviews and a 1.4 rating on the same day; Trustpilot says it does not fact-check reviews.

This site's own archive. usacomplaints.com holds 7 published complaints about Wayfair, all submitted in 2011 to 2013: 6 are about Wayfair as the seller or site operator and 1 is a refund complaint about a Wayfair item bought through Walmart's site. They concern a price that rose at checkout (2011), an Amazon-marketplace order changed from knife sets to kitchen shears (2011), a refund not received for a returned chair (2012), a wrong product received (2012), a magazine subscription received after a purchase (2012) and delayed, partly back-ordered tool orders (2013); one 2013 post is a positive review of a cabinet. They are individual accounts that have not been verified by Wayfair or by this site and are not representative of current practice.

Arbitration terms. The Terms of Use (last updated January 29, 2026) contain an arbitration agreement stating that disputes are resolved "BY FINAL AND BINDING INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION" and that "class arbitrations and class actions are not permitted", with an exception allowing either party to use small claims court for qualifying claims. The terms allow an opt-out by written notice to [email protected] "within 60 days of the first time you agreed to terms with Wayfair that included an arbitration agreement", and say Massachusetts law applies where otherwise applicable. The terms also state that the arbitration agreement does not prevent a user from bringing a dispute to a federal, state or local government agency.

Litigation, settlements and regulator correspondence

Company statement. Wayfair Inc.'s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (legal proceedings, Part II Item 1) says the company is from time to time involved in litigation and legal claims in the ordinary course and that it does "not believe that the outcome of any legal matters to which we are presently a party will have a material adverse effect on our results of operations or financial condition". That is the company's own statement, quoted as filed.

Court dockets opened on October 14, 2026. Each entry below is taken from the docket text only; complaints are allegations, not findings, and Justia notes that its docket records are not findings of fact or liability. Prakash v. Wayfair LLC (E.D. Cal. 2:26-cv-00263), filed January 30, 2026, lists nature of suit "Other Fraud"; on April 3, 2026 Wayfair LLC filed a "MOTION to DISMISS and COMPEL ARBITRATION or Motion to STRIKE", and the docket, last retrieved by Justia on May 29, 2026, shows no ruling on it. Luark v. Wayfair Inc (W.D. Wash. 2:26-cv-02769) was removed on August 5, 2026 from Skagit County Superior Court, lists nature of suit "Other Fraud", and on September 2, 2026 was consolidated with 2:26-cv-02435-JLR. Wilson v. Wayfair Inc. (D. Mass. 1:26-cv-11420), filed March 24, 2026 under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, shows a plaintiff's stipulation of dismissal filed August 20, 2026; the docket does not state terms. Boehm v. Wayfair LLC (S.D.N.Y. 1:25-cv-10392), a copyright case naming Wayfair LLC doing business as Latitude Run, shows a notice of settlement on February 10, 2026 and a plaintiff's notice of voluntary dismissal with prejudice on February 25, 2026.

California Proposition 65 matter. The California Attorney General's Proposition 65 record 2025-00673 lists Epps v. Wayfair LLC (San Francisco Superior Court CGC-25-625904): a 60-day notice filed February 28, 2025 about toluene in furniture wax branded, supplied or made by Briwax International Inc., a complaint filed June 3, 2025 with type of claim "Failure to Warn", and a settlement dated March 6, 2026, recorded as out of court, with injunctive relief "Warnings or Delisting", a non-contingent civil penalty of $4,000.00, attorney fees and costs of $28,500.00 and total payments of $32,500.00. The record also lists a corrected complaint entry dated February 13, 2026 whose type of claim reads "Dismissal of action against Wayfair LLC". The record is a private-plaintiff matter filed with the Attorney General; it does not state an admission or a court finding.

Regulator correspondence. A June 15, 2023 FTC Division of Advertising Practices letter to Wayfair Inc., part of the FTC's published INFORM Consumers Act letters, says "Wayfair appears to meet the definition of 'online marketplace'" and was sent "to notify you of your responsibility to comply with this law". The letter states that it "does not reflect any assessment as to whether you have engaged in conduct violative of" the Act and that similar letters were sent to numerous other companies. No other agency action or settlement was identified in the sources checked on October 14, 2026 (the CourtListener search was rate-limited); the dockets above are not a complete list.

Is Wayfair Legitimate?

Wayfair LLC is a Boston-based operating company with a published address (4 Copley Place), a parent that files public reports with the SEC (Wayfair Inc.), a BBB profile dating its accreditation to 2003-03-10 with an A+ letter grade, and published return, refund and damage policies in its Help Center. The same BBB profile shows 5,121 complaints in the last 3 years and Trustpilot shows a 1.4 rating across 6,053 reviews (both as displayed on October 14, 2026); those figures describe customer experiences reported to third parties and are not findings by any regulator. Wayfair also runs brands such as Joss & Main, AllModern, Birch Lane and Perigold under the same operator, so a complaint about one of them may relate to the same company.
