Varo Bank: how to reach Varo, dispute a charge, close an account and where to complain (checked October 14, 2026)

This page was compiled from Varo's own Help Center and legal agreements, FDIC data, a court docket, and BBB, Trustpilot and CFPB listings opened on October 14, 2026. This site's archive had no approved posts about Varo on that date (see the complaint record below), so the page does not rely on reader complaints.

Who you are dealing with. Varo's accounts are held at Varo Bank, N.A., a national bank regulated by the OCC; FDIC data list the holding company as Varo Money, Inc. Varo's website footer reads 'Member FDIC'. Check which entity an agreement names before relying on any offer.

Contact. Varo's Help Center (updated March 3, 2026) lists in-app chat and chatbot, and phone support at 1-877-377-8276 from 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM ET daily, closed on federal holidays, for adding the card to a digital wallet, disputing a transaction and logging in. Account applications and refund checks for closed accounts go through varomoney.com/support, which the page says responds within 2 business days.

Written disputes. The General Terms Agreement (effective May 4, 2026) says errors on electronic transfers must be reported no later than 60 days after Varo sent the first statement showing the problem, by phone at 1-877-377-8276 or in writing to 'Varo, ATTN: DISPUTES, PO Box 108, Draper, UT 84020'. A report should give your name and account or 16-digit card number, describe the error and say why you believe it is one, and state the dollar amount; if you report orally Varo may require written confirmation within 10 business days. The agreement says Varo will determine whether an error occurred within 10 business days after hearing from you.

Disputing a transaction. Varo's 'Dispute a Transaction' article (updated September 23, 2026) separates unauthorized or fraudulent transactions from merchant errors on valid transactions, and says that for quality or non-delivery issues with goods or services you must contact the merchant. Its 'Disputes Lifecycle' article says an email update comes within 10 business days of filing and that disputes 'may take up to 45-90 calendar days'; a provisional credit may be issued and is reversed if the final decision goes against you. The General Terms Agreement (effective May 4, 2026) says you should tell Varo 'AT ONCE' of an unauthorized transfer and states that, if you notify within two business days of learning of a loss, liability can be limited to $50, rising to as much as $500 after that; and that unauthorized transactions on your statement should be reported within sixty days.

Closing an account, or a closure by Varo. The Bank Account Agreement (effective February 13, 2026), section 15, says: 'We may cancel or suspend the Bank Account or this Bank Account Agreement at any time and for any reason, at our sole discretion.' It says unused funds in a closed account are returned 'via check sent to the address we have in our records' and that Varo will 'endeavor to place your refund check in the mail by the fourteenth (14th) day after your account is closed'. Varo's 'Account Closures' article (updated May 1, 2026) says that when Varo closes an account it does not provide specifics and refers customers to the account-closure email. Keep your mailing address current in the app, because the refund is mailed by USPS.

Restricted or held accounts. Section 21 of the General Terms Agreement says: 'If the Bank detects activity which is believed to be suspicious, unauthorized, or unlawful Varo can restrict access to your Varo Products'; that Varo may require you and other parties to the activity to produce documents; and that funds on deposit 'may be held at our discretion until the source of such funds and/or the activity is properly verified'. The sections read did not state a fixed review deadline.

Varo Advance and Line of Credit repayment. The Varo Advance Account Agreement (effective October 6, 2026) says an Advance 'must be repaid within 30 days of the Advance receipt date', is repaid by a single automatic deduction from the Bank Account on the chosen date, and that if funds are insufficient 'we’ll deduct any balance owed from incoming deposits to your Bank Account until the Advance is fully repaid'. Varo's Line of Credit Repayment article says early payoff carries no early payoff fee, but 'paying early does not reduce the original agreed upon fee and only reduces the payments at the end of your repayment schedule'.

Arbitration. The General Terms Agreement contains a mandatory individual arbitration clause administered by the American Arbitration Association, says class actions are not available in arbitration, requires written notice and a 30-day resolution period before suit or arbitration, and says claims 'must be filed within one year' of the incident. It describes a 60-day written opt-out by certified mail to ATTN: Legal Department, PO Box 108, Draper, UT 84020, which must state that you are rejecting arbitration. The clause also requires the notice to identify the agreement by date, give your name, address and social security number, and be signed by you; it must be sent by Certified U.S. Mail, Return Receipt Requested, and be received by Varo within 60 days of the date the clause was provided to you, and the agreement says notices sent by other methods will not be accepted. Read the clause itself before relying on this summary.

Complaint routes outside Varo. The OCC's HelpWithMyBank.gov takes complaints about national banks through an online form (or a downloadable paper form) and lists a Customer Assistance Group number of 1-800-613-6743; the page says the OCC can only assist customers of national banks and federal savings associations and that it cannot seek monetary compensation. The CFPB complaint page says that if another agency is better placed it will pass the complaint on. The CFPB accepts complaints about financial products at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, and your state attorney general or banking regulator can be contacted as well. Keep the dates, amounts, screenshots and the closure email for any complaint.

Varo Bank regulators: OCC, FDIC and the sources checked on October 14, 2026

Who supervises Varo Bank. FDIC BankFind lists Varo Bank, National Association (certificate 59190) as an active national bank regulated by the OCC, with deposit insurance since August 1, 2020 and a main office in Draper, Utah.

Order against a former employee. OCC Consent Order AA-ENF-2024-45 (digitally signed June 18, 2024 by the OCC's Deputy Comptroller for Specialty Supervision) prohibits a former Varo Bank digital banking representative from participating in the affairs of insured depository institutions. In its findings, which the respondent 'neither admits nor denies', the OCC says she worked at the bank from June 7, 2021 to June 3, 2022, 'improperly accessed customer accounts and modified customer profile information without authorization, which allowed fraudulent transfers to occur' between May 8, 2022 and June 6, 2022, and that the transfers caused a loss to the bank of approximately $21,732. This is an order against an individual who was an institution-affiliated party of the bank, not an order against Varo Bank or Varo Money.

Entity-level enforcement. No OCC, FDIC, CFPB, FTC or state enforcement action against Varo Bank, N.A. or Varo Money, Inc. itself was identified in the sources checked on October 14, 2026 (web searches for the entity name against OCC, FDIC, CFPB and FTC releases and the CourtListener docket search). The OCC's enforcement-actions search page (apps.occ.gov/EASearch) could not be completed from the tools used, so this is not a confirmation that the OCC database contains no entry. A reader who needs a definitive answer should search that database by bank name.

Financial figures reported to the FDIC. FDIC BankFind data for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 show total assets of about $337.8 million, total deposits of about $209.8 million and a year-to-date net loss of about $46.6 million; for the year ended December 31, 2025 the same data show a net loss of about $91.8 million (figures in thousands in the FDIC data, rounded here). These are the bank's regulatory filings, not a rating of its safety.

Funding. Banking Dive reported on February 3, 2026 that Varo raised $123.9 million and added two board members; the article is a secondary source and the figures are the company's announcement as reported.

BBB's page shows a business start date of November 24, 2015 and an incorporation date of October 22, 2015 for Varo Money, and FDIC data show the bank has been insured since August 1, 2020. Varo's home page says it offers a free bank account, a savings account, a cash advance (Varo Advance; the company's home page says initial limits range from $20 to $250 and that higher limits, up to $700, can be unlocked over time with qualifying direct deposit and a positive history), a line of credit of up to $2,000 (Varo Line of Credit), early direct deposit, Zelle and a credit-builder card (Varo Believe); eligibility and terms are set out in the agreements linked from varomoney.com/privacy-legal.

The savings article (updated October 13, 2026) says the standard rate is 1.00 percent APY and that 3.75 percent APY on the first $5,000 requires $800 or more in qualifying direct deposits and positive balances in both accounts at month-end. This finding is scoped to that search; the CFPB accepts complaints about financial products whether or not a company appears in the public database.

This site. No approved post in this site's archive named Varo as the subject on October 14, 2026, so no complaint themes are listed.

The BBB, Trustpilot and CFPB figures measure different things and are not combined.

Court filings involving Varo: Medlin v. Varo Money, Inc. (2024 data-incident class complaint)

Medlin v. Varo Money, Inc., No. 3:24-cv-02932 (N.D. Cal.). On May 14, 2024, a putative class action was filed by James Medlin against Varo Money, Inc. over a data incident Varo had described to customers in notices dated May 7, 2024. The complaint alleges negligence, breach of implied contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing and a violation of California's Unfair Competition Law, and describes exposed data including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, bank account numbers and the last four digits of Social Security numbers. These are allegations. Varo's spokesperson told Banking Dive that 'Varo did not experience a breach of its network' and that some customers' credentials had been compromised from an outside source, as reported by Yahoo Finance; the same article, citing a notice Varo filed with the Maine Attorney General, said 7,007 people were affected and that Varo offered two years of free credit monitoring.

The docket, checked newest first on October 14, 2026, shows a stipulation extending Varo's time to respond (June 6, 2024) and a notice of voluntary dismissal filed by the plaintiff on July 12, 2024 (docket entry 10); the docket does not show an answer, a motion to dismiss or a ruling on the merits. The docket text does not say whether the dismissal was with or without prejudice.

Scope of the check. A CourtListener search on October 14, 2026 for case names containing 'Varo Bank' or 'Varo Money' returned five dockets filed between 2021 and 2026; Medlin was the only putative class action found. The others were not reviewed in enough detail to describe and are not listed here.
