Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and archive reports

All figures on this page are as displayed on 2026-10-20 and are not added together, because they describe different pages.

  • BBB, SolarMax Renewable Energy Provider, Inc. (Riverside; not BBB accredited): rating A+; "12 complaints in the last 3 years. 2 complaints in the last 12 months"; one customer review, 1 out of 5 stars, dated 06/03/2024. The 8 complaints displayed on the tab are all of type "Service or Repair Issues" with status "Answered". BBB page data show the business started 2008-01-01, incorporated 2011-07-19 and BBB file opened 2014-04-09; BBB lists David Hsu as President.
  • BBB, SolarMax LED, Inc. (Riverside; not BBB accredited; alternate name "SolarMax Contracting"): rating A-, with the stated reason "5 complaint(s) filed against business"; "5 complaints in the last 3 years. 4 complaints in the last 12 months"; 0 reviews. Three complaints are displayed (dated 11/05/2025, 01/21/2026 and 05/15/2026; two "Service or Repair Issues" and one "Order Issues"), each with status "Answered". BBB page data show business started 2015-01-06 and file opened 2024-06-19.
  • Trustpilot (solarmaxtech.com): an unclaimed profile with 0 reviews.

BBB complaints are consumers' allegations and BBB does not verify them. A 05/15/2026 complaint to SolarMax LED alleges an abandoned installation and months of non-response; no business response is displayed under it. A 01/21/2026 complaint alleges that roofing work done before a panel installation was left unfinished, with water intrusion and possible mold; the company's response on that BBB page, dated 01/22/2026, says the inquiry was received January 20, 2026, "a service case was created the same day", and, because the installation was "completed nearly 10 years ago", the project records needed to be retrieved from its archives. Neither the allegations nor the response has been independently verified here.

SolarMax Technology complaints: where to take an installation, service or warranty problem

This page was checked on 2026-10-20. SolarMax's contact page lists (951) 221-8172 and [email protected] "for sales and inquiries", and (866) 223-4483 and [email protected] "for technical issues". The Riverside office at 3080 12th Street is listed as open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 7 pm; the page lists Diamond Bar and San Diego offices as open by appointment only.

Before calling. Have the signed contract, the system's installation date, the inverter and panel serial numbers and photos of the problem, and write down the date and name of each contact.

More detailShow less

SolarMax's warranties page says the company's warranty covers "defects in materials and workmanship"; it describes a warranty that "lasts for 20 to 25 years" in one place and an "industry-leading 25-year warranty" in another, and says the warranty is transferable to later homeowners. A different page statement says the panels carry a "25-year manufacturer warranty", which is a separate promise, so check both the installer's and the manufacturer's warranty documents. The page does not give claim steps or the exact terms, so the signed contract and warranty document govern.

If the company does not resolve it. CSLB's complaint page lists a separate "Solar Complaint Form" (PDF in English or Spanish, or online). BBB accepts complaints about both BBB-listed SolarMax businesses (see the complaint record). The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) says on its complaint page that it "addresses violations of California Contractors License Law, whether the contractor is licensed or unlicensed, for up to four years from the date of the act."

More detailShow less

BBB's profiles for both SolarMax businesses point to CSLB as the licensing resource. If the system was financed or leased, also keep the lender or lease paperwork: SolarMax's 10-K says its former finance subsidiary has provided no financing to purchasers since 2020, and the website page on financing does not name the lender, so the contract shows who holds the loan.

Litigation record: federal dockets and the company's SEC disclosure

In the Legal Proceedings item of its 10-K for 2025, SolarMax says that in the ordinary course of business it and its subsidiaries are "involved in various legal proceedings involving contractual relationships, product liability claims, and a variety of other matters" and that it does not believe any pending proceedings will have a material impact on its financial position or results of operations. The only specific matter the 10-K describes is an arbitration the company itself started against SPIC, a state-owned Chinese company, over receivables from solar projects completed in 2020 and 2021: awards were issued in the company's favor in April 2025, about RMB 42.5 million ($6.0 million) was collected, and RMB 7.0 million ($1.0 million) remained unpaid at December 31, 2025 with enforcement proceedings continuing. This is a commercial dispute, not a consumer case.

Later SEC disclosure. The company's 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (filed 2026-10-08) describes disputes with SPIC in China over additional farmland occupation taxes on four photovoltaic projects completed by a subsidiary in 2020 and 2021. It says a Chinese court issued three adverse judgments in June and August 2026, one case was still awaiting a ruling as of September 30, 2026, and the company recorded an accrual of RMB 29.3 million, approximately $4.3 million. This is a commercial and tax dispute in China, not a consumer case. Source: the 10-Q, Part II Item 1.

A CourtListener search of case names for "Solarmax" on 2026-10-20 returned 7 dockets; the older ones (1986 to 2003) name a different SolarMax, Inc. and are not listed here. For SolarMax Technology the search returned two 2015 dockets in the Southern District of California. The one examined is described on this page; an earlier docket by the same plaintiff, Sapan v. Solarmax Technologies, Inc. et al., 3:15-cv-00648 (filed March 23, 2015, per Justia), was also found, and its outcome was not shown in the sources read. The SEC 10-K legal proceedings, a CourtListener case-name search, BBB and the CSLB complaint page showed no consumer class action or government enforcement action against the company as of 2026-10-20.

Who is SolarMax Technology

SolarMax Technology, Inc. is a Nevada corporation that its Form 10-K for 2025 (filed 2026-04-06) says was formed in January 2008. Its principal offices are at 3080 12th Street, Riverside, California 92507 and its common stock trades on Nasdaq under the symbol SMXT. A 10-K/A was filed on 2026-04-14; this page cites the original 10-K, and the amendment was not read.

The 10-K describes the primary business as the sale and installation of photovoltaic and battery backup systems for residential and commercial customers, plus LED systems and services for government and commercial users, and says that since the third quarter of 2025 the principal business has been EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) services for battery energy storage (BESS) projects. It states a July 31, 2025 EPC agreement with Longfellow for a BESS facility in Pecos County, Texas, with expected revenue of about $120.1 million, and says it generated revenue of $60.2 million from this contract in 2025, all in the second half of the year. The company's own website describes the same range, from "utility" to "commercial" to "residential" solutions, and says it was "founded in 2008".

Operating entities. The 10-K lists four wholly-owned U.S. subsidiaries: SolarMax Renewable Energy Provider, Inc. (California, established July 19, 2011; residential and commercial solar and storage systems and EPC services), SolarMax LED, Inc. (California, established July 15, 2013; commercial LED lighting, government and consulting projects and battery storage projects), SolarMax Financial, Inc. (California, established September 9, 2009; secured installment financing, with no new loans since early 2020) and SMX Capital, Inc. (New Jersey, acquired June 2011; owns and funds renewable energy projects). It also lists four wholly-owned subsidiaries outside the U.S. that conducted its China operations. BBB lists two of the U.S. subsidiaries separately, which is why two BBB profiles appear on this page.

Financial and listing disclosures. The company's 10-K and its 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (filed 2026-10-08) each carry going-concern disclosures. The 10-Q says the company was in default on convertible notes in the aggregate principal amount of $13.7 million at June 30, 2026 and reports a stockholders' deficit of about $16.1 million. Per the company's filings, Nasdaq sent notices on March 3, 2026 (minimum bid price), June 22, 2026 (minimum market value of listed securities of $35.0 million; compliance period to December 21, 2026) and August 20, 2026 (late 10-Q); the company effected a one-for-12 reverse stock split on August 13, 2026 and filed the 10-Q on October 8, 2026.
