Save A Lot complaints: who to contact and how store ownership affects the answer
This page was checked on 2026-10-18. Save A Lot's contact page says its stores are independently licensed (quoted below), so a problem at a shop is usually first a matter for that store's manager; the corporate brand handles website, Rewards, app, gift card and product-quality requests through forms.
- Customer service forms. The contact page lists separate request forms for general questions about a team member, store visit, sweepstakes or the website; Save A Lot Rewards or app help; product quality concerns; gift card inquiries; and other requests (savealot.com/wcp/contact-us, read 2026-10-18). The page gave no general customer-service phone number. The buttons for these forms link to pages hosted on zapier.app.
- Product quality concern. The company's J Code and UPC help page asks for the product's J Code or UPC with the request and says 'someone from our customer support team will be in contact with you'. Keep the receipt and the package.
- Money-back guarantee. The About page says: 'If you are unhappy with the freshness or quality of one of our items, we will replace the item or provide a refund.' How a particular store applies it is not described on that page.
- Coupons. The contact page says 'each store may have its own coupon policy'; check the nearby location.
- Gift cards. The contact page lists 866-650-6049 for checking a gift card balance and a form for cards that do not work.
- Rewards and app. The Rewards terms are issued by Moran Foods, LLC, were last modified 04/15/2026, and say the company may modify or delete terms, benefits and offers 'at any time, with or without notice'. The terms also say disputes are resolved 'by mediation or, failing mediation by binding arbitration' held in St. Louis, Missouri, and include the sentence 'THE PARTIES KNOWINGLY AND VOLUNTARILY WAIVE THEIR RIGHTS TO HAVE ANY DISPUTE TRIED AND ADJUDICATED BY A JUDGE OR A JURY'. Read them before relying on a particular offer.
- Outside the company. For a store experience you can also contact the consumer protection office of your state attorney general; for a food-safety concern, your local health department. Reports to those offices are separate from complaints on this site, BBB or Trustpilot.
Who operates Save A Lot, and how the stores are owned
Legal entity. Save A Lot's Privacy Policy (last updated July 1, 2024) says: 'We are Moran Foods, LLC, operating under the brand name SAVE A LOT.' The Rewards terms (last modified 04/15/2026) also name Moran Foods, LLC. The company's About page says Moran Foods LLC opened the first Save A Lot store in 1977 and that the Save A Lot banner became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Supervalu Inc in 1994; this is the company's own history.
Ownership as of 2016. Supervalu's Form 8-K reporting the event of December 5, 2016 says Supervalu completed the sale of its Save-A-Lot business to SAL Acquisition Corp, an affiliate of Onex Partners Manager LP, for a purchase price of $1.365 billion in cash, under a merger agreement that included Moran Foods, LLC, described as 'a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu prior to the Sale'. Ownership after that sale, including whether Onex still owns the company, was not verified in the sources checked on 2026-10-18, and this page makes no statement about current ownership.
Independent stores. The company's 2026-09-22 press release describes Save A Lot as 'the largest independently owned and operated value-focused grocery store chain in the U.S., with approximately 650 stores in 29 states.' The contact page, read the same day, refers to 'one of our 750+ stores'. The two company pages give different store counts and we do not choose between them. The licensing site (ownasavealot.com) invites independent operators to become retail partners and describes Save A Lot as a grocery wholesaler. The Privacy Policy says independent retailers 'independently own and operate their grocery stores' but 'license the use of our brand name and/or use our wholesale distribution network', and that their own websites and apps 'are not operated by us'. Supermarket News reported on 2023-08-08 that Save A Lot 'had sold the last of its stores to a licensee' and 'will continue to operate as a wholesaler and licensor'. The archive posts on this page date from 2003 to 2013, before that report.
Licensee change in Chicago. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on 2026-07-25 that the Save A Lot stores in Chicago operated by licensee Yellow Banana closed permanently on that date. It quotes a company spokesperson, Sarah Griffin, attributing the split to 'Financial headwinds' under Yellow Banana's ownership and to cuts to SNAP benefits. Yellow Banana's own position was not read. The article reports that Save A Lot 'notified Yellow Banana at the end of June that it would terminate its operational agreement'; that Yellow Banana has a $26 million redevelopment agreement with the city, through which it received 'more than $13 million in taxpayer financing'; and that, according to Alderman Marty Quinn (13th), Save A Lot has requested $3 million more from the city (his statement to the newspaper, not a finding). It attributes to a Department of Planning and Development spokesperson the statement that 'the city is exploring every opportunity to recoup taxpayer funding, if necessary'. A 2026-07-21 Sun-Times article says the agreement was for six Save A Lot stores and that Yellow Banana's CEO died of a stroke in April, which it says triggered a potential default under the agreement.
Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and this site's archive
BBB (profile for Save-A-Lot Holdings, Inc., Headquarters, Northwest Plaza, MO; BBB lists Moran Foods, LLC among alternate names), as displayed on 2026-10-18: not BBB accredited; BBB Rating A+; '16 total complaints in the last 3 years' and '2 complaints filed in the last 12 months'; 'Average of 6 Customer Reviews', each of the six showing 1 star. BBB states that customer reviews are not used in its letter-grade rating. BBB page data gives a business start of 1977-01-01, incorporation 1983-03-09 and BBB file opened 2000-12-07. BBB also lists store-level profiles that are separate from this one.
Trustpilot, as displayed on 2026-10-18: 1.8 from 56 reviews; unclaimed profile; Trustpilot states it does not fact-check reviews. These platform figures are shown separately and are not added to each other or to this site's count.
This site's archive. 13 approved complaints from 2003 to 2013 name Save A Lot as the subject. They are individual accounts of specific stores: staff or manager conduct toward customers (6 posts), pricing, product availability or food quality (3), and employment or treatment of employees (2); two others concern a stolen item at a store and the weekly-ad web page. The counts are keyword matches, the posts are unverified consumer statements, and all are at least thirteen years old. Several relate to different stores in different states and, as the company itself says, stores are independently licensed.
Court record found in the sources checked
Kiefer v. Moran Foods, Inc. (D. Conn., No. 3:12-cv-00756), filed May 18, 2012, is an employee wage case under the Fair Labor Standards Act (nature of suit 'Labor: Fair Standards'), not a customer case. The CourtListener docket, opened newest first on 2026-10-18, shows a minute entry of July 30, 2014 and an order granting certification of the settlement class, final approval of the class action settlement and approval of the FLSA settlement, signed July 31, 2014 and entered August 5, 2014 (entry 328). The settlement amount was not reviewed.
SBFO Operator No. 3, LLC v. Onex Corporation (E.D. Mo., No. 4:19-cv-03271), filed December 13, 2019, is listed by CourtListener with the cause 'Racketeering (RICO) Act'. Supermarket News reported on 2019-12-17 that a suit by Save A Lot licensees who are U.S. Navy and Marine veterans had been filed in the Eastern District of Missouri; the article says the suit alleges that Onex Corp., an affiliated investor, and two Onex partners who are also Save A Lot directors had a 'secret plan', and that the suit does not name Save A Lot or its current management as a defendant. The article does not give a docket number and the docket entries reviewed do not state the plaintiffs' claims, so this page does not state that the two are the same case. The docket shows a memorandum and order granting the defendants' motion for summary judgment (entry 128, March 24, 2023), a notice of appeal (April 14, 2023), a Court of Appeals opinion and judgment dated May 8, 2024 and mandate dated June 18, 2024, and letters in September and November 2024 about a petition for a writ of certiorari. The content of the appeal opinion was not reviewed. The claims are allegations.
No consumer class action or state attorney general action against Save A Lot or Moran Foods was identified in the sources checked on 2026-10-18; this is a statement about the search, not a statement that none exists.
Recalls. The openFDA food enforcement data (last updated 2026-10-07), searched on 2026-10-18 for recalling firm 'Save-A-Lot', lists two recalls by 'Save-A-Lot Food Stores Inc': F-0337-2016 (Wylwood mixed vegetables) and F-0338-2016 (Wylwood whole kernel corn), both Class II, recall initiation date 2015-10-06, status Terminated, reason 'Sample of the recalled lot was positive for Listeria monocytogenes'. A separate search for product descriptions mentioning Save A Lot also returned recalls by other firms, for example H-0818-2026, Class I, status Ongoing, initiated 2026-04-22 by PS Seasoning & Spices, Inc. for the 50-pound ingredient 'Save A Lot Bind', made with milk powder recalled by its supplier due to Salmonella; this is an ingredient lot, not a shelf product. For a specific item, check FDA and USDA FSIS recall pages and the package codes.
Is Save A Lot Legitimate?
Save A Lot's Privacy Policy identifies Moran Foods, LLC as operating under the brand name Save A Lot, and the company's pages describe a chain of independently licensed grocery stores (about 650 stores in 29 states per its 2026-09-22 press release; '750+' per its contact page). BBB lists a headquarters profile for Save-A-Lot Holdings, Inc. with an A+ rating, not accredited, 16 complaints in three years as displayed on 2026-10-18; Trustpilot shows 1.8 from 56 unverified reviews.
Complaints and reviews are consumers' statements. Because stores are independently licensed, experiences vary by location and the figures do not measure any single store.
