Relaxium is the brand of American Behavioral Research Institute, LLC, a Boca Raton, Florida, company that BBB dates to 2009. It publishes a return policy with a 90-day window and answers complaints on BBB. BBB's letter grade is high while customer review averages on BBB and Trustpilot are low; the figures are in the complaint record section.

Regulators and self-regulatory bodies have looked at its marketing more than once. In 2018 the Electronic Retailing Self-Regulation Program, a voluntary industry program then run by the Council of Better Business Bureaus whose recommendations are not legal rulings, recommended that ABRI stop saying the product itself was clinically studied for specific benefits, drop certain claims, and change its free-trial offer, which it found did not obtain consumers' clear consent to automatic renewal; ABRI said it would follow those views in future advertising. In 2023 a group of California district attorneys obtained a court judgment, agreed to by ABRI without admitting liability, under California's Automatic Renewal Law and False Advertising Law, with $925,000 in civil penalties and costs and changes to its disclosures. In 2025 FDA issued a warning letter about a clinical study of the product. A New York class action over its "clinically proven" claims was settled in 2022. A federal suit filed in California in December 2025 had no ruling on the company's motion to dismiss in the docket entries through June 2026.

Complaints, reviews and lawsuit allegations are statements by consumers and litigants, not findings against the company.

Complaint record: BBB and Trustpilot

BBB (profile Relaxium, Boca Raton, FL): not BBB accredited, BBB rating A+, 119 complaints in the last 3 years and 22 in the last 12 months; of the 119, BBB marks 81 as answered and 38 as resolved. Customer reviews average 1.88 out of 5 across 176 reviews. BBB does not use customer review stars when it calculates the letter grade, which is why an A+ can sit next to a low review average.

Three of the most recent BBB complaints illustrate the issues raised. In one (08/08/2026, answered) a customer says a TV ad offered a free trial bottle for the cost of shipping and that about two weeks after delivery a charge of about $120 appeared; the company replied that the trial length, a 17-day window to cancel and a charge of $59.95 per bottle if not cancelled were shown at checkout and in the confirmation email and had to be accepted with a checkbox, and the customer rejected that answer. In another (07/17/2026, resolved) a trial package was misdelivered; the company cancelled the pending charge and the subscription and refunded the shipping fee. A third (06/17/2026) reports stomach upset after taking the product; the company offered help under its satisfaction guarantee.

Trustpilot (relaxium.com): 1.7 from 180 reviews, 44 of them in the last 12 months; 73% are 1-star and 14% are 5-star. The company claimed the profile in April 2025 and has replied to all negative reviews. Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews.

Relaxium complaints: where to take a trial-charge, cancellation or refund problem

How the trial offer works. BBB complaints describe TV ads offering a free trial bottle of Relaxium Sleep for the cost of shipping. In its BBB replies the company says the order page and confirmation email state the trial length, a 17-day window to cancel and a charge of $59.95 per bottle if you do not cancel in time, and that a checkbox confirms you accepted those terms.

More detailShow less

These are the company's own descriptions in its complaint replies; the terms printed in your own confirmation email are the ones that apply to your order. The website also sells a subscribe-and-save option (10% off every order with free shipping), which is a repeat order rather than a one-time purchase.

  • To cancel a trial or subscription, call customer service at (888) 353-1205 (Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Eastern), use the self-service portal at RelaxiumHelp.com, or email [email protected]. (800) 709-4541 is the order line for new orders.
    More detailShow less

Cancel before the trial window ends, ask for a cancellation or reference number, and note the date, time and name of the agent.

  • To return product for a refund, get a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number first; the return policy says returns without one cannot be accepted. You have 90 days from the original order date. You may keep one opened bottle; return all unopened bottles for a full refund, and if you keep extra bottles the refund is prorated. Write the RMA number on the package, ship it insured with tracking to Relaxium Return, 820 Atlantic Avenue, North Kansas City, MO 64116, and pay the return postage yourself. The company says it processes a return within 7 to 10 business days of receipt and issues the refund to the original payment method within a further 7 to 10 business days.
  • Put a dispute in writing. Section 12 of the terms of use asks customers to send any dispute to the Help Desk within thirty days of the event, by email to [email protected] or by mail to 2255 Glades Rd, Suite 324A, Boca Raton, FL 33431, Attention: Help Desk, and to allow at least 30 days for a reply. The same section requires binding individual arbitration under American Arbitration Association consumer rules and waives class actions. Under that section ABRI pays the arbitration costs, not including your attorney's fees, only for claims under $5,000 where you are successful; in all other cases you bear 50% of the arbitration cost and your own attorney's fees.
    More detailShow less

These are the company's contract terms, not a statement of the law: the 30-day request does not shorten the federal time limits for disputing a charge with your card issuer, and whether an arbitration clause can be enforced depends on the facts and the state.

  • Dispute the charge with your card issuer. For a credit card, the federal Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute a billing error, including goods not accepted or not delivered as agreed, if your written notice reaches the issuer within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the charge.
    More detailShow less

For a debit card, call your bank at once: protections for a dispute with a merchant over a debit card purchase are generally weaker than for a credit card and depend on your bank's and the card network's rules.

  • Escalate. File a complaint with BBB from the Relaxium profile page, report the charge to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and contact your state attorney general's consumer protection office; the company is based in Florida, where the Attorney General takes complaints at myfloridalegal.com.
    More detailShow less

California residents can also contact their county district attorney, since California prosecutors have already enforced the state's Automatic Renewal Law against the company.

Keep the order confirmation, a screenshot of the offer page if you have it, card statement lines, the RMA number, the return tracking number and the dates of every call or email.

Court dockets that name the company

Government and self-regulatory actions.

  • California auto-renewal judgment (2023). District attorneys of San Diego, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties and the Santa Monica City Attorney, working as the California Automatic Renewal Task Force, brought the case in Santa Cruz County Superior Court. They said ABRI did not properly disclose that a trial order would turn into an automatically renewing subscription. On 2023-09-05 ABRI, without admitting liability, agreed to a court-ordered judgment with injunctive relief and $925,000 in civil penalties and costs, and agreed to change its advertising, packaging and website disclosures. The district attorneys' announcement says restitution to California consumers was handled through a separate class-action settlement.
  • FDA warning letter (2025-04-30). FDA said ABRI ran a clinical study of Relaxium Sleep in people with insomnia without the Investigational New Drug application FDA says such a study requires. ABRI's position is that Relaxium is a dietary supplement, not a drug.
  • Advertising review (2018). On 2018-05-15 the Electronic Retailing Self-Regulation Program, a voluntary industry self-regulation program then run by the Council of Better Business Bureaus, recommended that ABRI stop claiming the product itself was clinically studied to provide specific benefits, stop using "up to" percentage claims, drop claims of no side effects and of being the most effective or best-selling non-prescription sleep aid, and tie sleep claims to studies of individual ingredients. It found the free-trial offer, as then shown online, did not obtain consumers' affirmative consent to automatic renewal. ERSP accepted as truthful that the product was formulated by a doctor. ABRI said it would follow ERSP's views in future advertising. ERSP recommendations are not binding legal rulings; the 2023 California judgment later imposed binding disclosure requirements.

Who operates Relaxium

Relaxium is a brand of American Behavioral Research Institute, LLC (ABRI), a Florida limited liability company at 2255 Glades Road, Suite 324A, Boca Raton. ABRI's terms of use say it owns and operates relaxium.com and tryrelaxium.com, and the site footer describes Relaxium Sleep as a registered trademark of ABRI. Court dockets name the company as 'American Behavioral Research Institute, LLC doing business as Relaxium'. BBB gives 2009-09-02 as the date the business started and was incorporated; BBB also lists the websites relaxiumsleep.com and tryrelaxiumtoday.com for it.

The best-known product is Relaxium Sleep, a capsule sleep supplement promoted on television; the company's website also sells Relaxium Calm, sleep and calm gummies, Flexium joint products and focus supplements. The site carries the standard notice that its statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and that the products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Relaxium announced in a January 2024 press release that its products were entering retail stores including CVS, Walgreens, GNC, Kohl's, Publix, Wegmans, Meijer and The Vitamin Shoppe.

More company historyShow less

An FDA warning letter dated 2025-04-30 was addressed to Timea Ciliberti as ABRI's Executive Chair and CEO. It concerned a clinical study of Relaxium Sleep in people with insomnia (Protocol ABRI-002, 40 enrolled subjects): FDA concluded that, as used in that study, the product was an investigational drug and that ABRI should have filed an Investigational New Drug application first. ABRI's written response told FDA that Relaxium is and is intended to be a dietary supplement, not a drug, and that it does not plan further clinical studies. FDA found the response inadequate because it gave no corrective plan. A warning letter is FDA's notice of violations, not a court ruling.

You can also complain to BBB, report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and contact your state attorney general.

Has Relaxium been sued?

Federal dockets show two consumer class actions against the company behind Relaxium, American Behavioral Research Institute, LLC, over its marketing. Lomedico (S.D.N.Y., filed 2022) alleged false "clinically proven" claims and was discontinued in November 2022 after the parties settled; no class was certified. Semones (C.D. Cal., filed 2025-12-29) ended in a voluntary dismissal recorded on 2026-09-03, with no class certified and no ruling on the claims. Separately, in 2023 California prosecutors obtained an agreed judgment under the state's Automatic Renewal Law with $925,000 in civil penalties and costs, entered without any admission of liability. Other federal dockets naming the company are not consumer cases: two wage-and-hour suits under the Fair Labor Standards Act (Montejo, 2023, closed in 2024; Stapleton, 2024, settled with court approval and dismissed in 2024) and a trademark suit by Nutranext Business, LLC that the parties dismissed in April 2025. Lawsuit claims are allegations, not findings.

The ingredients page on Relaxium's website lists these amounts for Relaxium Sleep: Valerest (228.9 mg), a proprietary ingredient the company says is exclusive to Relaxium; ashwagandha extract (125 mg); magnesium citrate, glycinate and oxide (100 mg); L-tryptophan (500 mg); melatonin (5 mg); chamomile extract (75 mg); passionflower extract (75 mg); and GABA (100 mg). The same page carries the notice that the company's statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. If you take a prescription drug, the same notice says to consult your doctor before making changes.

Is Relaxium FDA approved?

The Relaxium website says: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease."
