Oportun problems: pay, get payment help, dispute credit reporting, complain (checked October 11, 2026)

Oportun is an installment lender and savings-app company. Its website says personal loans are originated by Pathward, N.A. or Column N.A. in most states and by Oportun, Inc. in New Mexico and Wisconsin, so the name on your loan documents may be a bank partner even though Oportun services the account. Check your loan agreement for the lender's name before you write to anyone.

Contact channels on Oportun's contact page (October 11, 2026). Loans: (866) 488-6090 (Monday to Friday 8 am to 8 pm PT, Saturday and Sunday 9 am to 7 pm PT), text (855) 642-2140, email [email protected], and a separate line for complaints, [email protected]; mail to PO Box 560910, The Colony, TX 75056. Savings (Set & Save): (855) 314-5934 and [email protected]. The page asks you to include your full name, address, phone number, the last four digits of your account number, and the reason for the request, dispute or complaint.

If you cannot make a payment. The FAQ says: "Please let us know right away if you think you won't be able to make a payment. Call us at 888-907-0129, and we'll try to work something out with you." It also says missed payments are reported to the credit bureaus. For a secured (car-title) loan the FAQ lists a different number, 855-754-5491, and says a loan that stays delinquent without payment arrangements could lead to losing the car.

How you can pay (FAQ and make-a-payment page). Online account or debit card, by phone at 866-488-6090, by check or money order, or in stores and at third-party agents (CheckFree Pay, MoneyGram, PayNearMe). Oportun's own pages give two different mailing addresses for payments: the FAQ says "Oportun P.O. Box 2063 Menlo Park, CA 94026" ("Do not send cash"), while the make-a-payment page says "PO Box 560910 / The Colony 75056" and "Allow at least 7–10 business days for delivery." Confirm the address with Oportun at (866) 488-6090 before mailing. The make-a-payment page says "Fee of $1.75 for cash / $1.49 debit may apply" at PayNearMe locations, and that no fees for those options are charged for loans made to residents of Louisiana, New Mexico or Wisconsin, or for California loans whose Loan Disclosures and Promissory Note name Oportun, Inc. as lender (pages opened October 11, 2026).

Early payoff and autopay. The make-a-payment page says "we never charge prepayment penalties" and that paying off a loan early can save interest. Oportun's autopay terms say you may cancel automatic ACH loan withdrawals by calling (888) 752-1207 during business hours, at least 3 business days before the payment due date, or by following your bank's stop-payment procedures, and that you must still make your loan payments on time.

If you are contacted about a debt. The CFPB says that once you receive debt validation information you have 30 days to dispute the debt in writing, and that if you send a written verification request within that period the collector must pause collecting the disputed amount until it has adequately responded. After you file a CFPB complaint, the CFPB says the company provides a response within 15 calendar days, with up to 60 calendar days for a final response if the first is not final.

Credit-report disputes. The same contact page gives two written-dispute mailing addresses in different places: "P.O. Box 4085, Menlo Park, CA 94026" in the contact form and "PO Box 560910, The Colony 75056" in the text below it. Ask which one applies before you mail. The CFPB says that fixing an error generally means contacting both the credit reporting company and the company that provided the information, and that you should explain in writing what is wrong and include supporting documents.

Escalating. You can submit a complaint to the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint; the CFPB states that it sends complaints about financial products and services to companies for response. Oportun's website also carries a New Mexico notice naming the state Financial Institutions Division (505-476-4885) for unresolved problems with a lender licensed there.

Regulator actions: CFPB order against Hello Digit (2022) and a CFPB investigation closed (2023)

Hello Digit, LLC (CFPB administrative proceeding 2022-CFPB-0007). The CFPB press release of August 10, 2022 states that Hello Digit, a savings-app company, "was acquired by Oportun Financial Corporation" in December 2021. The CFPB's consent order against Hello Digit, LLC concerned its automated-savings tool; the Bureau found deceptive acts or practices: the "no overdraft guarantee" and "never transfers more than you can afford" statements, reimbursement of overdraft fees, and statements that the company would not keep interest earned on consumer funds. The order requires at least $68,145 in redress to consumers whose overdraft-reimbursement requests were denied and a civil money penalty of $2,700,000. The respondent consented "without admitting or denying any of the findings of fact or conclusions of law," except for facts needed to establish jurisdiction. The order says it terminates on the later of five years from its effective date or five years from the most recent date the Bureau initiates an action alleging a violation of it. The CFPB page lists its status as "Post Order/Post Judgment." Oportun's 10-K says Digit paid the penalty in the third quarter of 2022.

Oportun and the CFPB investigation. On March 28, 2023 Oportun filed a Form 8-K stating that the CFPB "had completed its investigation and concluded that it would not recommend pursuing an enforcement action against the Company" in connection with a previously disclosed Civil Investigative Demand, and that Oportun "continues to believe that its business practices have been in full compliance with applicable laws."

Scope of this check. On October 11, 2026 the CFPB's enforcement actions index returned no results for "oportun" in the title filter, and the CFPB site search for "oportun" listed the Hello Digit press release, which mentions Oportun as the acquirer. I did not find a CFPB enforcement action naming Oportun Financial Corporation or Oportun, Inc. as a respondent in the sources checked that day. State regulator enforcement databases were not searched exhaustively; the company's SEC filings of 2026 (below) state it is not presently a party to proceedings it believes would be material.

Who is Oportun: ownership, products, bank partners and costs

Oportun Financial Corporation is a publicly traded company (Nasdaq: OPRT) headquartered at 1825 S Grant Street, Suite 850, San Mateo, California; SEC filings describe operating through its subsidiary Oportun, Inc. It was formerly named Progreso Financiero Holdings, Inc. (until September 2013, per SEC EDGAR). In its 10-K the company says that since its founding in 2005 it has extended more than $21.8 billion in credit and that it has 126 physical retail locations.

Products (company statements). Unsecured personal loans of $300 to $10,000 and, in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Texas and Utah, secured personal loans of $2,525 to $18,500 backed by a car title; and the Set & Save savings app, with deposits held at partner banks (the site names Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Citibank) and described as eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance on certain conditions. On July 27, 2026 Oportun announced Smart Bills, a Set & Save feature that it says uses artificial intelligence to set aside "safe-to-save" amounts for regular bills. The company says it reports account behavior to the nationwide credit bureaus, and that it is "not an FDIC-insured bank."

Costs, as the company states them. Loans are "subject to an administrative fee of up to 10% of the principal amount"; its example is a $3,333 principal, 30-month term, $333 fee and 35.95% APR with 65 biweekly payments of $70. The FAQ says there are no application or prepayment fees but fees may apply for late payments and returned checks. Read your own loan agreement for the APR and fees that apply to you.

Bank partners. The 10-K says Oportun relies on Pathward, N.A. to originate a substantial portion of loans; an amendment of September 26, 2025 provided that Pathward will cease retaining company loans by the end of February 2026, and Oportun began purchasing 100 percent of newly originated loans from October 1, 2025. A Form 8-K filed July 7, 2026 reports a Program Management Agreement signed June 30, 2026 with Column National Association to originate unsecured personal loans in select states.

Hello Digit. Oportun acquired the Digit savings app (Hello Digit) in December 2021, according to the CFPB; see the regulator section for the CFPB order against Hello Digit, LLC.

Trustpilot. oportun.com: TrustScore 4.8 from 20,542 reviews, 592 in the last 12 months; claimed profile since October 2021. Trustpilot states that the company "invites their customers to review, whether positive or negative" and replied to 100 percent of negative reviews. On its home page Oportun says its Google and Trustpilot reviews are "solicited from credit customers only." The BBB, CFPB and Trustpilot figures measure different things and are not combined.

Lawsuits and public reporting: court dockets, SEC statements and the 2020 collection-suit report

What the company's filings say. The 10-K for fiscal 2025 and the 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 state that, other than matters described in the reports, the company is "not presently a party to any legal proceedings that, if determined adversely to us, we believe would individually or taken together have a material adverse effect." A risk-factor section states that the company has been named as a defendant in legal actions, including class actions, and that "generally, this litigation arises from the claims of violation of do-not-call, credit reporting, collection, and bankruptcy laws," and that it has chosen to settle some matters, none of which it describes as material.

Dockets. A CourtListener search for federal dockets with "Oportun" in the case name on October 11, 2026 returned 42 results, most captioned as individual persons against Oportun, Inc. The two most recent in that list, Claudia M. De Leon Jordan v. Oportun, Inc. (Central District of California, filed October 4, 2026) and Griffin v. Oportun, Inc. (Eastern District of New York, filed September 28, 2026), show "15:1681 Fair Credit Reporting Act" as the cause of action in the CourtListener record. I did not open the complaints, so this page does not describe what any of these cases allege or how they end.

2020 report on collection lawsuits. ProPublica and the Texas Tribune reported on July 28, 2020 that Oportun said it would drop all pending lawsuits against borrowers who had fallen behind, including during the pandemic, that it would cap rates on new loans at 36 percent "all-in," and that "several thousand cases" would be affected. The article quotes CEO Raul Vazquez, in a blog post that day, acknowledging that the company had become the largest filer of debt claims in California and Texas while filing suits on fewer than 6 percent of its loans in recent years.

The CFPB's 2022 order against its Hello Digit subsidiary and the 2023 closure of a CFPB investigation without a recommended enforcement action are described above, and the complaint figures from BBB, the CFPB database and Trustpilot are shown with their dates in the complaint record section. Whether Oportun's loans suit you depends on the APR, fees and term in your own loan agreement; compare them with other options before you accept.
