Lemonade Insurance
Lemonade is a brand of commonly owned companies owned by Lemonade, Inc.; Lemonade Insurance Company, a New York-organized insurer, is one of the insurers behind it, and the underwriter depends on product and state. This page sets out Lemonade's own cancellation, refund and claim routes, the state regulator routes for a complaint, and the documented record: Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Texas consent orders, a New York Attorney General settlement concerning Metromile, a data-disclosure class settlement that received final court approval on September 10, 2026, and BBB and Trustpilot figures as displayed on October 7, 2026. It gives no rating of its own, and complaints and lawsuits are allegations unless a court or regulator states a finding.

Cancel, claim, refund or complain: Lemonade's channels and the regulator routes
Lemonade says it sells policies and takes claims through its app and website; its FAQ answers 'Can I sign up over the phone?' with 'No, you can only sign up for Lemonade through our mobile app or our website.' The routes below are taken from Lemonade's own pages opened on 2026-10-06 and from regulator pages. Which route applies depends on the product (renters, homeowners, car, pet or life) and the state of the policy.
First, identify the insurer named on your policy. Lemonade's Legal Stuff page says: 'Property and casualty insurance is provided by Lemonade Insurance Company (LIC) and Metromile Insurance Company (MIC)'; that home policies in a list of states 'are underwritten by member companies of Homesite Group, Inc.'; and that 'Car policies in Texas are underwritten by Home State County Mutual Insurance Company'. Lemonade is therefore a brand used by a group of companies, and the company that underwrites a given policy depends on the product and state. The declarations page of the policy names the insurer; use that name when you contact a regulator.
Cancel and refund. Lemonade's FAQ says, for renters: 'You can cancel your policy at any time through the Lemonade app or website and receive a refund for the remaining period you've paid for.' The homeowners, car and pet answers describe cancelling 'through the Lemonade app' with a refund for the remaining period paid. For term life the FAQ says: 'There is never any charge for voluntarily canceling your policy. We even offer a 30-day free look period, so you'll get a full refund of your first month's premium if you cancel within the first 30 days. To cancel your policy, you can call us at 844-733-8666.' For pet, the FAQ adds that cancelling removes any potential Giveback and that illnesses or injuries from a former policy are treated as pre-existing conditions on a future policy. The policy documents and state law govern the details; this page does not restate them.
File a claim. Lemonade's claims page says to tap the 'File a Claim' button in the Lemonade app. Its FAQ says that after the claim report you enter bank details and, once the claim is approved, Lemonade pays the amount minus the deductible into your account. It also says: 'Our goal is for the majority of simple property claims to be paid almost instantly' and that some claims need a full review and 'may take longer to settle'. The claims page describes an automated first review ('Our AI runs dozens of anti-fraud algorithms') with a hand-over to Lemonade's claims staff when a claim is not approved instantly; these are company statements, not findings. For emergencies without app or website access the FAQ gives (844) 733-8666, and for car claims by email it gives [email protected]. General questions: [email protected].
If the company does not resolve it. A complaint about an insurance policy or claim can be filed with the insurance regulator of the state where the policy was issued. The NAIC publishes a page titled 'Insurance Departments' at content.naic.org/state-insurance-departments. Lemonade Insurance Company is organized in New York, and the New York Department of Financial Services says its online Consumer Complaint application can be used 'to file a complaint with DFS about an insurance company'; DFS also warns that it 'may share a copy of your complaint with the company'. Because the insurer depends on the product and state, the NAIC directory is the lookup step for the department of the state that regulates your policy; this page does not list each state's complaint form. If a claim is denied, a consumer can ask the company for the denial in writing and for the policy provision it relies on, keep claim messages, photos, estimates and receipts, and then send the regulator the policy number, claim number, dates and copies of what was sent. (This is a general preparation list, not a statement from Lemonade or DFS; the DFS 'File a Complaint' page says only that its application can be used for complaints about an insurance company and that DFS may share a copy of a complaint with the company.) BBB also accepts complaints about Lemonade (see the complaint record section for the figures as displayed).
Class settlement notice. If you received a Lemonade notice in April or June 2025 that your driver's license number was exposed through the online quote tool, the settlement website for In re Lemonade, Inc. Data Disclosure Litigation lists its own dates and claim steps; see the litigation section for what was verified and what was not.
State insurance regulator orders and the New York Attorney General settlement
These are orders and settlements found on regulators' own sites on 2026-10-06. The search covered Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Texas, Illinois and New York pages; absence of other actions was not established and no state not listed here was checked page by page. Each description follows the order's own words.
- Pennsylvania Insurance Department, Docket MC25-05-001 (Consent Order issued May 22, 2025). The order follows a market conduct examination of Lemonade Insurance Company covering January 1 to December 31, 2023 (report issued April 1, 2025; the order records a company response dated April 30, 2025). It states the examination 'revealed violations' of several Pennsylvania provisions, orders Lemonade to cease and desist from the activities described and to pay $70,000 'in settlement of all violations contained in the Report', and requires compliance with the report's recommendations. In the order Lemonade 'admits and acknowledges that it has received proper notice of its rights to a formal administrative hearing' and waives that hearing.
- Connecticut Insurance Department, Docket MC 26-16 (Stipulation and Consent Order dated April 30, 2026). After an examination from November 4, 2024 to September 11, 2025, the Commissioner alleged instances of improper advertising of claim settlement practices, failure to file rates, improper underwriting practices, incomplete complaint logs and lack of documentation on model oversight and governance. The order states 'Respondent admits the allegations in paragraphs three and four' and fines Lemonade Insurance Company $110,000.
- Connecticut Insurance Department, Stipulation and Consent Order (March 2022). The Commissioner alleged that Lemonade failed to implement its policies so that 'unlicensed individuals' undertook activities requiring licensure in connection with casualty claims and that there were 'claim errors and delays', and that its Privacy Pledge did not clearly describe collection and use of images, audio and video recordings. The order records that Lemonade described a digital claim process in which claimants submit a short video and an alternative manual claim submission process; it states 'Respondent admits' the allegations in two paragraphs, requires a 90-day report, 'a meaningful opportunity for a claimant to submit a claim without recording a video of themselves' and a revised Privacy Pledge, and fines Lemonade $210,000.
- Texas Department of Insurance, Order No. 2023-7771 (dated February 1, 2023; enforcement file 30674). A consent order following a targeted market conduct examination of Lemonade's homeowners line for January 1 to December 31, 2020. It records findings including use of an agent that was not properly appointed (in 100 of 100 reviewed policies), claims-handling delays in sampled claims and privacy-notice violations, notes that Lemonade's affiliated agency was appointed on February 22, 2021, and orders a $200,000 administrative penalty.
- Texas Department of Insurance, Order No. 2024-8780 (dated August 13, 2024; enforcement file 34580). After Lemonade 'self-reported' a rating error in April 2024, the order finds that Lemonade charged rates different from those on file, records Lemonade's representation that overcharges affected more than 6,000 Texas policies and undercharges more than 10,000, and orders restitution with 5 percent simple interest to overcharged policyholders for policies effective from September 19, 2022 to May 21, 2024. Lemonade represented it would not recover premium from undercharged policyholders.
- Illinois Department of Insurance, market conduct examination. The published examination report covers January 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022 (homeowners, private passenger auto and pet) and lists a table of violations by examined sample. Among them: complaint-record items (for example, in one 15-file complaint sample, 15 files lacked the minimum information the rule requires, and in a 56-file sample 56 did); in a sample of 116 cancellation files, the report says 'The Company cancelled policies one day after the intended cancellation date' (116 of 116 files) together with a failure to maintain proof of mailing of cancellation notices; and, in an 84-file claims sample, 'The Company failed to adopt and implement reasonable standards for the prompt investigations and settlement of claims arising under its policies' (7 of 84 files). These are findings about the examined samples, not all policies. A closing letter dated July 1, 2025 says the Department received Lemonade's 'proof of compliance' and is closing its file; the penalty terms of any stipulation were not read.
- New York Attorney General, Assurance of Discontinuance No. 25-042 (Metromile LLC). The Attorney General's press release of October 14, 2025 lists Metromile among eight car insurers that together paid $14.2 million over data-security failures in online quoting tools, with Metromile paying $2 million. The Assurance finds that threat actors began exploiting Metromile's auto quote tool on December 1, 2020 and obtained about 90,000 New Yorkers' driver's license numbers over two months; the incident predates Lemonade's 2022 acquisition of Metromile (10-K). The Assurance states 'Respondent neither admits nor denies' the findings. Lemonade's 10-K says the settlements with the State of New York were completed in September 2025.
Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Texas orders concern state-law compliance findings and are not court judgments; consent orders and settlements are described as the documents state them.
Who Lemonade is and who issues the policy
Lemonade's Legal Stuff page says 'Lemonade' is a brand name used by a group of commonly owned companies. Lemonade Insurance Company, 'an insurance corporation organized under New York law', is one insurer in the group: the same page says property and casualty insurance is provided by Lemonade Insurance Company (LIC) and Metromile Insurance Company (MIC), that home policies in a listed set of states are underwritten by member companies of Homesite Group, Inc. (Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest, Homesite Insurance Company, Homesite Indemnity Company and Homesite Insurance Company of Florida), and that car policies in Texas are underwritten by Home State County Mutual Insurance Company. Which company underwrites a policy depends on the product and state; the declarations page names it. Lemonade, Inc., a Delaware public benefit corporation, is the parent. Lemonade Insurance Agency, LLC (New York) is the licensed distribution agent and provides certain underwriting and claims services, and Lemonade Life Insurance Agency, LLC (Delaware) distributes life insurance; Lemonade, Ltd. (Israel) provides technology and research. The Lemonade, Inc. 10-K lists Metromile, Inc. and Metromile Insurance Company as further subsidiaries; Metromile was acquired in 2022 (10-K).
The 10-K states the company's regulated U.S. insurance subsidiaries are 'domiciled and admitted in the states of New York and Delaware' and that Lemonade is licensed to sell renters, homeowners, pet and/or car policies in 50 states and Washington, D.C., operating in 41 of those states and D.C. as of December 31, 2025 (company statement). Lemonade, Inc. trades as LMND on the New York Stock Exchange. For the quarter ended June 30, 2026 its 10-Q reports 3,308,666 customers and $1,434.3 million of in force premium (company-reported metrics; the filing defines in force premium).
The company describes a business model in which it takes 'a flat fee from your premium', uses the rest to pay claims and directs leftover funds to causes policyholders choose (the 'Giveback'); the Legal Stuff page says the Giveback is paid only if authorized by Lemonade Insurance Company's board. This is the company's description of its model, not a finding about outcomes.
Complaint record on other platforms (as displayed on 2026-10-07)
Figures below are what each platform displayed on 2026-10-07. They are not combined with each other or with this site's own archive, which has no complaint posts linked to this company.
- BBB. Headquarters profile for Lemonade Insurance Company, 5 Crosby St Fl 3, New York: rating B-; 'NOT a BBB Accredited Business'; 620 total complaints in the last 3 years and 199 closed in the last 12 months on the complaints tab; the main profile page lists '620 complaint(s) filed against business' and 2 as not resolved; 'Average of 706 Customer Reviews' on the reviews tab. BBB's own pages and counts change from day to day; these are the figures seen on 2026-10-07. BBB page data lists file opened 2017-12-27, business started 2015-10-15 and incorporated 2016-03-19, shows the entity type as 'Limited Liability Company (LLC)' and lists 'Metromile' as an alternate name; these are shown as BBB displays them. BBB notes that profiles cover a three-year period and that complaint volume should be read against company size.
- Trustpilot. 'Lemonade' (lemonade.com): 4.2 out of 5 from 7,283 reviews, 3,083 in the last 12 months; claimed profile since August 2017 with a paid Trustpilot subscription; Trustpilot says the company invites customers to review and replied to 99 percent of negative reviews. Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews, and its AI-generated summary is Trustpilot's own text.
Lemonade's own claims page quotes positive customer testimonials; those are selected by the company.
Lawsuits and settlements
In re Lemonade, Inc. Data Disclosure Litigation, No. 1:25-cv-04106-JHR-KHP (S.D.N.Y.). The settlement website describes a class action over an alleged data exposure involving Lemonade's online insurance quote platform between April 2023 and September 18, 2024, with notices to affected people sent in April and June 2025. The defendants are Lemonade, Inc. and Lemonade Insurance Agency, LLC. The long-form notice states a $10,500,000 settlement fund, a documented-loss payment of up to $10,000 and/or a cash fund payment, and three years of credit monitoring and insurance services for class members; the claim deadline was September 8, 2026 (passed). The plaintiffs' allegations are allegations.
Final approval (verified 2026-10-07). Docket entry 64, an 'Order Granting Final Approval of Class Action Settlement' signed by Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker on September 10, 2026 (opened on Justia on 2026-10-07), says: 'The Court hereby approves the Settlement' and finds it 'fair, reasonable, and adequate to the Class Members'; records that there were no objections and two opt-outs; approves service awards of $2,000 per class representative, attorney's fees of $3,500,000 and litigation costs and expenses of up to $22,268, to be paid from the Settlement Fund; provides that any non-distributable residue goes to the Electronic Frontier Foundation; and states that 'The above-captioned Action is hereby dismissed against Defendants in its entirety, with prejudice', with the court reserving jurisdiction over implementation and administration. The settlement website was still showing the notice-stage wording on 2026-10-07 (it says enrollment in credit monitoring and insurance services will be available only after the Court grants final approval), so a reader should check the administrator's Contact Us form for current enrollment steps. Lemonade's 10-Q separately describes finalized settlements of a liability exposure from its car insurance quote flow ('final settlement was made in July 2026'); the filing does not name the case, so this page does not equate the two. Insurance Journal reported the approval on September 18, 2026.
Other cases. The 10-K (Item 3) says the company 'is occasionally a party to routine claims or litigation incidental to its business' and says it is not a party to any pending proceeding that, in its words, is 'likely to have a material adverse effect' on the business. A Justia Dockets party search for 'Lemonade' run on 2026-10-06 returned ten results, including several 2026 federal cases naming Lemonade Insurance Company as a defendant in Texas and California courts; those dockets were not opened here and their claims are not described.
A 2022 class settlement over video claims and biometric data was reported in the press, but no court order or settlement website for it was opened, so it is not described here.
Is Lemonade Insurance Legitimate?
Facts checked on 2026-10-06: Lemonade's Legal Stuff page says Lemonade Insurance Company is organized under New York law and 'licensed as a stock property/casualty insurance company in New York and in all other states where Lemonade non-life insurance is available'. The Connecticut order identifies it as domiciled in New York and licensed to transact property and casualty insurance in Connecticut (NAIC company code 16023); the Texas orders state it holds a certificate of authority in Texas; and the Pennsylvania Insurance Department conducted a market conduct examination of it. Its parent, Lemonade, Inc., files annual and quarterly reports with the SEC and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (LMND).
The same sources record regulator orders and a New York Attorney General settlement (see the regulator section), a BBB rating of B- with the company not BBB accredited, and a Trustpilot score and review count as displayed. This page draws no conclusion beyond those facts; complaints and lawsuits are allegations unless a court or regulator states a finding, and consent orders are quoted in the terms they use.
