Empower (now Tilt): contact, cancel, repayment debits and complaint routes (checked October 9, 2026)

The app people search for as Empower is now called Tilt. The company says it rebranded on August 4-6, 2025 and that its accounts, products and terms did not change; the legal entity named in the current Terms of Service is Tilt Finance, Inc., while court dockets still name Empower Finance, Inc. (doing business as Empower). Tilt's own pages and the court record, not our archive, are the sources below; this page has no linked complaints from our archive as of 2026-10-09.

Contact Tilt. Tilt's Help Center lists in-app chat (24/7), phone (888) 943-8967 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-8:00 PM Eastern, excluding holidays) and [email protected] for non-urgent questions.

Cancel the subscription. Tilt's FAQ says: 'deleting the app doesn't unsubscribe you. You can cancel your subscription in the "Billing" section of the More tab in your Tilt app or by contacting Support.' The Help Center article on cancelling says to open the Billing section of the app and tap Cancel subscription at the bottom of the page. A separate Help Center article ("What is Tilt's subscription fee?") says first-time customers get a 14-day trial, after which Tilt charges $8 a month, and that a returning customer is charged $8 immediately. The Subscription Agreement (effective August 10, 2026) says the current Monthly Fee is $8, but $6 a month for customers who signed up between January 1 and July 28, 2020 and $0 for those who signed up before January 1, 2020. The Terms say there is no fee to cancel. The Terms also say you can use Cash Advance without paying the subscription fee if you email [email protected] and ask for the fee to be waived.

Stop or move a repayment debit. The Cash Advance Repayment Authorization (effective September 3, 2026) says you can change the repayment date by 3:00 pm PST on the business day before it, and can revoke the authorization by contacting Tilt in the app or by phone between 8 am and 8 pm EST at least two business days before the scheduled debit. If you revoke it, you cannot take another Cash Advance until all outstanding advances are repaid. Cancelling the subscription does not end a Cash Advance debit: the Repayment Authorization says 'Canceling your subscription does not revoke this Tilt Cash Advance Authorization.' Monthly subscription debits can be stopped by contacting Tilt in the app or at [email protected] at least three business days before the debit date, after which Tilt says it will no longer provide its Services. If a monthly-fee debit fails, the Subscription Agreement says Tilt may retry within the next 31 days, up to five attempts in total on a linked debit card and three through ACH.

Overdraft fee caused by Tilt. The Terms say that if Tilt causes an overdraft while attempting to withdraw funds from your bank account, Tilt will reimburse the fee; to receive the refund, contact [email protected].

If the company does not resolve it. You can submit a complaint to the CFPB (consumerfinance.gov/complaint; the CFPB page lists (855) 411-2372). The Terms also point South Carolina residents to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (consumer.sc.gov, (803) 734-4200) and Utah residents to the Utah Division of Consumer Protection complaint page. Before any arbitration or small-claims case, the Terms require a written Notice of Dispute sent by certified mail to Tilt's Notice Address; the Terms also describe a 30-day written opt-out from arbitration after first accepting them, and say the arbitration clause does not apply to disputes about consumer credit for covered military members and dependents.

Tilt Finance, Inc. (Empower): who operates the app and how Cash Advance works

Who operates it. The Terms of Service (last updated August 19, 2026) are between users and Tilt Finance, Inc. The Privacy Policy (also updated August 19, 2026) names Tilt Finance, Inc., Tilt Lending, LLC and Tilt Card, Inc. as affiliates. Tilt's press release of August 6, 2025 (datelined San Francisco) says Empower Finance, Inc. had rebranded to Tilt, names Warren Hogarth as Co-Founder and CEO, and says the company serves over three million active subscribers in the U.S. and has been profitable since 2022 (company statements, not independently verified). Tilt's About page says $16B+ extended and 5M+ customers (also company statements). We did not find a company page giving a founding year.

Products. Tilt says it is 'a financial technology company, not a bank.' Its site lists Cash Advance ($10-$500 on the Cash Advance page; $10-$400 in the Help Center cancellation article), a Line of Credit (up to $1,000, issued by FinWise Bank), Tilt Credit Cards (issued by WebBank), and a Tilt debit card and checking account with banking services provided by nbkc bank, Member FDIC. Customers are limited to one of Cash Advance, Tilt Credit Cards or the Line of Credit at a time, per the Help Center. Cash Advance is available in all states except Connecticut, Maine and the District of Columbia.

How a Cash Advance works (Terms of Service). You link a checking account; Tilt reviews its transactions to decide eligibility and sets the offer amount in its sole discretion; consumer credit reports are not considered. Tilt debits the advance plus any delivery fee from your account on the date it forecasts your next paycheck, by ACH or the debit card on file. Delivery is free to a Tilt debit card (generally within about 1 minute) or by ACH (generally one business day); optional Instant Delivery to an external account costs $1.00 to $8.00 by advance amount ($1 for $0-$10; $2 for $10.01-$49.99; $3 for $50-$74.99; $4 for $75-$99.99; $5 for $100-$149.99; $6 for $150-$199.99; $7 for $200-$249.99; $8 for $250-$299.99) and 3% for $300 or more, with lower caps stated for Wisconsin and Maryland. The Cash Advance page says there is no interest, late fee or credit check.

If you cannot repay. The Terms say Cash Advances are offered 'on a non-recourse basis': Tilt says it has no contractual or legal claim against you, will not use debt collection, sell the debt or report it to credit bureaus. Tilt reserves the right to deny future advances if you do not repay. The Repayment Authorization allows failed debits to be retried within 180 days (up to five attempts on a debit card and three through ACH). A federal court has examined whether this product is 'credit' under federal law; see the lawsuits section.

Licences and registrations. Tilt's licensing page lists Tilt Finance, Inc. NMLS #1718374, a California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation CCFPL registration (04-CCFPL-1718374-3486392) and Wisconsin DFI license 1718374EWA; the Terms say South Carolina registers its Tilt Advance services with the SC Department of Consumer Affairs. Tilt's press release of August 6, 2025 lists Petal, Cashalo (Philippines) and NIRA (India) among its acquisitions, and a Tilt press release dated July 1, 2026 says it 'completed its acquisition of Blipay, a Brazilian salary-advance lender with more than 6 million registered users' (company statements; the Blipay business is outside the U.S. Cash Advance product described on this page). Other businesses use the name Empower, including Empower Federal Credit Union, which sued Empower Finance, Inc. over trademarks in 2022 (see below); check the legal entity and website before contacting a company.

Lawsuits involving Empower Finance, Inc. (dockets checked October 9, 2026)

Vickery and Fuller v. Empower Finance, Inc. (N.D. Cal. No. 3:25-cv-03675-JSC; Ninth Circuit No. 25-6377). A U.S. Navy petty officer and a U.S. Army sergeant sued in San Francisco Superior Court (CGC-25-623648) on behalf of a proposed class; Empower removed the case to federal court on April 28, 2025. The amended complaint (filed July 7, 2025) alleges violations of the Military Lending Act, the Truth in Lending Act and the Georgia Payday Lending Act, as the court's order describes it. On October 7, 2025 Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley denied Empower's motion to compel arbitration, writing that 'Based on the undisputed record Empower is a creditor extending consumer credit to covered borrowers' under the Military Lending Act, so the arbitration agreement is unenforceable against the two named plaintiffs; she also declined to send their TILA and Georgia claims to arbitration. Empower argued its advances are not credit; the court rejected that argument for purposes of the arbitration ruling. This was not a ruling on whether the claims succeed.

Empower appealed on October 8, 2025 and the district court stayed the case pending appeal on October 10, 2025. In the Ninth Circuit, the opening brief was filed January 30, 2026 and the answering brief April 1, 2026, with a reply on May 22, 2026. Amicus briefs were filed by the American Fintech Council and Financial Technology Association (February 6, 2026), the Center for Responsible Lending and National Consumer Law Center (April 8, 2026) and Blue Star Families and the National Military Family Association (April 8, 2026). Oral argument is noticed for November 16, 2026, 9:00 a.m., in San Francisco. No class has been certified and the dockets opened show no settlement. If you were not a covered service member or dependent, the court did not decide whether your own arbitration agreement is enforceable.

Individual arbitration claims. The law firm Labaton Keller Sucharow's Lantern page (dated November 3, 2025) says it and Berger Montague are representing clients in individual consumer arbitration claims against Tilt, alleging Cash Advances are 'earned wage access' loans without proper disclosures, and marks the case as 'Closed to New Clients.' These are the firms' allegations in an advertisement; we found no arbitration award on the pages opened.

Donovan et al. v. Empower Finance, Inc. (W.D. Pa. No. 3:24-cv-00027). Filed February 9, 2024 as a putative class action. Empower moved to compel arbitration on April 29, 2024; on October 31, 2024 the plaintiffs filed a notice of voluntary dismissal and the court ordered the complaint dismissed with prejudice without costs to any party. The Justia docket lists the nature of suit as 'Truth in Lending' and the cause of action as '15 U.S.C. § 1601 Truth in Lending'; the docket entries opened do not describe the allegations in more detail or any settlement terms.

Empower Federal Credit Union v. Empower Finance, Inc. (N.D.N.Y. No. 5:22-cv-01302). A trademark infringement suit filed December 5, 2022 under 15 U.S.C. section 1114, an order dismissing the case was entered on January 11, 2024 (entry 31, described on CourtListener as 'Order Dismissing Case'); the document itself was not opened, so the reasons or any terms are not stated here.

Is Empower (Tilt) Legitimate?

What the public record shows (checked 2026-10-09). Tilt Finance, Inc. publishes its Terms, licensing details and support contacts, lists state registrations (California DFPI CCFPL, Wisconsin DFI, South Carolina DCA), appears in the CFPB complaint database under that name, and is the party identified in the Terms of Service. The company's position is that Cash Advance is a non-recourse advance that is 'not a loan'; one federal judge has ruled, for the narrow purpose of the Military Lending Act arbitration bar, that it is consumer credit, and the Ninth Circuit appeal is pending.

Regulators. On 2026-10-09 we ran the FTC's press-release search (ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases) for 'Empower Finance', 'Tilt Finance', 'Tilt Finance, Inc.' and 'Empower cash advance'; the results shown were releases whose titles do not name Empower or Tilt. Earlier web searches (2026-10-07) for an FTC or state enforcement order against Empower Finance or Tilt Finance returned none. FTC cash-advance app actions we did find involved other companies, for example Cleo AI (FTC press release of March 2025). This is a negative finding limited to those searches, not a statement that no such action exists.

Things to check yourself. The Cash Advance page and the Help Center give different maximums ($500 and $400); the Terms say the fee for optional Instant Delivery rises with the advance amount; and the subscription is billed monthly after a trial. If a charge looks wrong, compare your bank statement with the Billing section of the app and contact Tilt before the debit date where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Empower app the same as Tilt?

Tilt's Help Center says: 'We're still the same company, just with a new name and fresh look,' and that products and terms did not change when the app updated on August 4, 2025. The August 6, 2025 press release says Empower Finance, Inc. rebranded to Tilt; the current Terms are with Tilt Finance, Inc. Other businesses also use the name Empower.

How do I contact Empower / Tilt support?

Tilt lists in-app chat (24/7), phone (888) 943-8967 on weekdays 8:00 AM-8:00 PM Eastern, and [email protected] for non-urgent questions.

How do I cancel the monthly subscription?

Tilt says deleting the app does not unsubscribe you; cancel in the Billing section of the More tab in the app or contact Support. First-time customers get a 14-day trial before the $8 monthly fee starts (the Subscription Agreement lists $6 for customers who signed up January 1-July 28, 2020 and $0 for earlier sign-ups), and the Terms say there is no fee to cancel. The Cash Advance Repayment Authorization says cancelling the subscription does not revoke it.

How much does a Tilt (Empower) Cash Advance cost?

Tilt says there is no interest or late fee, but access requires an $8 monthly subscription (waivable on request by email, per the Terms) and optional Instant Delivery to an external account costs $1 to $8 by advance amount, or 3% for $300 or more. Delivery to a Tilt debit card or by next-business-day ACH has no fee.

What happens if I cannot repay a Tilt Cash Advance?

The Terms call the advance non-recourse and say Tilt will not use collections, sell the debt or report to credit bureaus, but may deny future advances. Failed debits may be retried within 180 days (up to five card attempts and three ACH attempts), and you can revoke the debit authorization by contacting Tilt at least two business days before the scheduled date; cancelling the subscription does not revoke it.

Where can I file a complaint about Tilt or Empower?

The CFPB accepts complaints about financial products at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. The Terms also name the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs for South Carolina residents and the Utah Division of Consumer Protection for Utah residents.

Is there a class action against Empower / Tilt that I can join?

Vickery v. Empower Finance, Inc. is a proposed class action; as of the dockets checked on 2026-10-09 no class had been certified and no settlement was shown, and the Ninth Circuit appeal is set for argument on November 16, 2026. A law firm page marks its separate individual-arbitration campaign against Tilt as closed to new clients.

Did the FTC take action against Empower?

On 2026-10-09 searches of the FTC's press-release list for 'Empower Finance', 'Tilt Finance' and related phrases returned releases that do not name Empower or Tilt; this is limited to those searches. The FTC's March 2025 cash-advance app action we found concerns another company, Cleo AI.

What does BBB show for Tilt (Empower)?

As displayed on 2026-10-09, BBB's profile for Tilt (headquarters, San Francisco) shows rating B, 'NOT BBB Accredited', 576 total complaints in the last 3 years (221 in the last 12 months) and an average of 56 customer reviews at 1.02 out of 5. These are consumer submissions and a BBB rating, shown separately from the CFPB and Trustpilot figures on this page.
