Consumer complaint platforms show a different picture of the subscription and English Test experience: as displayed on 2026-10-20, BBB shows an F rating, 245 complaints in three years and 1.24 out of 5 from 37 reviews, and Trustpilot shows 1.6 from 8,211 reviews. Those are consumers' statements about billing, cancellation and test results; they are allegations that BBB and Trustpilot do not verify, and Duolingo's published position is that payments are generally nonrefundable. Complaint counts are not a measure of how the company treats the typical user, given its large user base.

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and this site's archive
As displayed on 2026-10-20, BBB's profile for Duolingo (5900 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh; headquarters and corporate-owned locations) shows: not BBB Accredited; BBB Rating F; 245 complaints in the last 3 years and 79 in the last 12 months; and a customer-review score of 1.24 out of 5 from 37 customer reviews. The rating reasons BBB states are "Failure to respond to 170 complaint(s) filed against business" and "5 complaint(s) filed against business that were not resolved". The complaints tab of that profile shows entries marked "Unanswered" and one marked "Resolved". The complaint texts shown there are consumers' statements, which BBB says it does not verify; their subjects include subscription charges after free trials or renewals, difficulty reaching support, and Duolingo English Test results.
Trustpilot shows 1.6 from 8,211 reviews for duolingo.com as displayed on 2026-10-20, with an "Unclaimed profile" label and the statement that Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews. These figures come from different sources and are not combined. No published complaint reports are currently linked to this profile.

- Cancel. Duolingo's help article says "You can cancel your Super Duolingo subscription at any time" and "Deleting the app and/or your account does not cancel your subscription." It says to cancel in the way the subscription was started.
More detailShow less
For a subscription bought in the Duolingo app (iOS or Android): open the app, tap the Super icon, tap Settings (gear icon), tap "Manage subscription", select "Cancel subscription", then confirm through Google Play, the App Store or Alipay. For a subscription bought through the phone or device settings, the article says Android users should submit a "support request" and iOS users should follow Apple's instructions. For a subscription bought in a web browser: sign in, open the profile picture menu, choose Settings, select "Super Duolingo", then "Cancel subscription" and confirm.
- After cancelling. The same article says streak and progress are not affected, Super features stay available for the rest of the paid period, and that "Canceling your subscription will not retroactively refund subscription payments." and "Previously charged subscription fees cannot be prorated based on cancellation date."
- Refunds. The refund article begins "Generally, all charges for in-app purchases are nonrefundable, and there are no refunds or credits for partially used periods." It says App Store (Apple) purchases are refunded by Apple, not Duolingo. For web purchases it says to sign in, click the Super icon, scroll to the option to contact Duolingo support and send an email asking for a refund; for Android it points to a support request with the "Purchase Issue" option. For gems it says to submit a bug report and select "Purchase issue". The Terms say "if you made purchases on Duolingo through the Apple or Google app stores, payments and refunds are handled by Apple or Google, respectively, and Duolingo cannot issue refunds for those purchases."

The Help article's Android instruction (contact Duolingo support) and that Terms sentence about Google are both quoted here as published; this page does not reconcile them.
- Terms. The Terms and Conditions of Service (last revised September 8th, 2025) say auto-renewing subscriptions renew for an equivalent period until terminated, that "All payments are nonrefundable" except where the law of your jurisdiction requires otherwise, and that purchases through Apple or Google are handled by those companies. The Terms also say that "ANY DISPUTE OR CLAIM RELATING TO THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OR THE SERVICE AND SEEKING MONETARY RELIEF SHALL BE RESOLVED BY BINDING ARBITRATION ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS". Before arbitration the claimant must send a written Notice of Claim by email or USPS Certified Mail, and within 30 days of receipt the parties "shall engage in at least one good-faith settlement conference". The Terms add that an individual "may opt out of this arbitration agreement by sending an email to [email protected] within 30 days of the day you first access or use the Service", and that either party may seek non-monetary, injunctive or urgent relief in court.

The Terms are governed by Pennsylvania law, with court proceedings in the state or federal courts sitting in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, subject to the arbitration section. The live Terms contain a 24-hour cancellation rule only for Extended Free Trial Codes (see the free-trial FAQ); this page did not verify any Duolingo statement about reminders for other trials, so check the trial screen you accepted and keep screenshots.
- Duolingo English Test. The test has separate Supplemental Terms and Conditions for the Duolingo English Test ("These Terms of Service were last updated on August 6, 2026"). Its Refund Policy says "All payments are nonrefundable", that there are no refunds or credits for expired, unused or partially used test purchases or results, and that there are no refunds if Duolingo invalidates a test for violating the rules. For a failure of the test, or no results within a commercially reasonable time (a "Test Issue"), it says Duolingo "will, at its option, provide you with a refund or credit, or use reasonable efforts to resolve the Test Issue." The claimant must report the Test Issue in writing within 24 hours after it occurs, respond to Duolingo's requests, not be responsible for the Test Issue and have met all requirements, and the refund "will not exceed the amount you actually paid for that test."
- Contesting an invalidated English Test result. The same terms say Duolingo, if it determines in its sole discretion that a user violated the Test Rules, "may invalidate the user's test results, even if those results have been previously certified, and notify all third parties that have received the user's results of the invalidation", and "may ban a user from taking the DET again" in cases of severe violations. They state: "Any appeal of an invalid or invalidated result must be submitted to Duolingo within 72 hours." A DET Certificate "is valid for two years from the date you take the DET". The DET terms carry their own mandatory-arbitration notice and incorporate the Duolingo Terms.
- Outside Duolingo. You can file a complaint with BBB through its profile, with your state attorney general, or with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you paid by card, your card issuer has its own dispute process and deadlines.
Legal proceedings
Duolingo's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (filed 2026-08-06) says in Item 1 "Legal Proceedings": "We are not currently party to any material legal proceedings." The filing also states that claims arising in the ordinary course of business may occur and that outcomes are inherently uncertain. The same 10-Q (Note 9, Commitments and Contingencies) says: "During the three months ended June 30, 2026, the Company accrued approximately $5 million for certain proposed legal settlement charges, representing the Company's expected amount of the total settlement obligation, with the remainder expected to be funded by insurance." It does not name the matter, and this page does not link it to any case. Both statements cover the period before the October 7, 2026 filing described on this page.
