Chime account problems: where to go, what to send and how to escalate (checked October 6, 2026)
Chime Financial, Inc. is a financial technology company, not a bank: in its annual report it says banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. (Members FDIC). Chime handles most member support, so problems with a Chime card, direct deposit or account closure usually start with Chime itself.
Contact. Chime's Help Center says: "The quickest way to contact us is to call (844) 244-6363," and that members can also chat in the app (Profile > Help Center > Chat). It says Member Services is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Disputing a card charge. Per the Help Center, dispute in the app: open the account, select the posted transaction and tap "Problem with this transaction?". Pending transactions cannot be disputed until they post. If a card is lost, stolen or used without permission, Chime says to freeze it in the app straight away. If you cannot file in the app, call (844) 244-6363. Chime lists what to attach: receipts, delivery and tracking details, merchant emails, written requests to cancel, and photos of damaged goods.
Dispute timing. Chime says most disputes are resolved within 45 or 90 days with email updates, that a temporary credit may be applied if an investigation takes more than 10 business days (20 for new accounts), and that once a chargeback begins it cannot be cancelled.
Closing an account and getting the balance back. Chime says to tap Profile > Personal info > Close account; closure is processed within five business days and can be cancelled within that time through Member Services; accounts with negative balances cannot be closed; a closed account cannot be reopened and a new one cannot be opened for 30 days. Chime says it processes a check for any remaining balance within 14 days of the closure date, mailed to the address on file, and to allow 30 days from closure to receive it. Moving the balance out before closing, and confirming the mailing address, avoids that wait. Delayed closure refunds were the subject of the 2024 CFPB order described below.
Holds, freezes and Chime-initiated closure. The Stride Bank deposit account agreement (opened 2026-10-06) says: "Chime and/or Bank may suspend, freeze, restrict, or close your Checking Account for any reason with or without notice," and that if monitoring detects certain activity "the Account funds will be subject to a hold pending review of the activity by the Bank and/or Chime," and that the Bank and/or Chime may require documents showing the activity is valid. If an account is cancelled, closed or terminated for any reason, the agreement says the member "may be eligible to receive the unused balance" by check to the mailing address on record, that identification and address verification documents may be required, and to "Allow fourteen (14) days for processing of the refund check." Terms differ by partner bank; read the agreement for your own account.
Formal error-resolution terms (Stride agreement). For electronic-transfer errors the agreement says: "We will determine whether an error occurred within ten (10) business days after we hear from you," and that "we may take up to forty-five (45) days to investigate," crediting the account within ten business days meanwhile. It also says that for new checking accounts, point-of-sale merchant transactions and foreign-initiated transactions "we may take up to ninety (90) days," with up to twenty business days to credit a new account. The Help Center's 45-or-90-day summary above is Chime's plain-language version of these terms.
Escalating. If Chime does not resolve the problem, you can submit a complaint to the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint (the CFPB page lists (855) 411-2372) or, to the California DFPI at dfpi.ca.gov/submit-a-complaint (the DFPI release lists (866) 275-2677). Chime's deposit agreements are separate documents for each partner bank and are listed at chime.com/policies. The Stride Bank deposit account agreement opens with a notice that it requires all disputes to be resolved by binding arbitration, with the clause at the end of Section II and American Arbitration Association procedure referenced. The clause says "If you initiate arbitration, we will advance any arbitration fees, including any required deposit," and also says: "NO CLASS ACTION, OR OTHER REPRESENTATIVE ACTION OR PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ACTION OR JOINDER OR CONSOLIDATION OF ANY CLAIM WITH A CLAIM OF ANOTHER PERSON OR CLASS OF CLAIMANTS SHALL BE ALLOWABLE." Read the agreement that applies to your account (the Bancorp agreement was not compared for this page).
Regulator actions: CFPB order (May 2024) and California DFPI order (February 2024)
CFPB, May 7, 2024 (Administrative Proceeding 2024-CFPB-0002). The CFPB says it found that, when checking and savings accounts were closed, Chime failed to refund remaining balances within 14 days "in thousands of instances," including thousands where refunds took more than 90 days, and that this conduct was unfair under the Consumer Financial Protection Act. The order requires Chime to come into compliance, pay a $3.25 million civil money penalty and pay at least $1.3 million in redress to consumers. Chime consented to the order "without admitting or denying any of the findings of fact or conclusions of law, except that Respondent admits the facts necessary to establish the Bureau's jurisdiction." The order prohibits Chime from "unfairly failing to provide refund checks for closed accounts within a reasonable amount of time." The CFPB page lists the status as "Post Order/Post Judgment" as displayed on 2026-10-06. Chime's 10-K describes the same order and amounts.
California DFPI, February 27, 2024. The DFPI's consent order resolved its investigation of Chime's handling of customer complaints. The DFPI found that Chime violated the California Consumer Financial Protection Law through unfair acts in complaint handling. Chime agreed to a $2.5 million penalty, to enhance customer service procedures (including 24/7 support, adequate staffing and training) and to file compliance reports with the DFPI for two years. The order states that Chime entered into it "without admitting or denying the Commissioner's Findings or Conclusions." The DFPI release says Chime cooperated and had begun remediation.
Earlier and other state matters (company's own description). Chime's 10-K says that in March 2021 it settled with the California DFPI and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation over marketing that allegedly implied Chime was a bank, with a $200,000 civil money penalty in Illinois, and that it "has been and continues to be subject to investigations from other state legal or regulatory authorities." Those 2021 settlements were not independently opened as primary documents for this page.
Chime Financial, Inc.: who operates Chime and how it works
Chime Financial, Inc. is a Delaware corporation headquartered at 101 California Street, Suite 500, San Francisco. Its annual report says it incorporated as 1debit, Inc. in August 2012. Its Class A common stock trades on NASDAQ as CHYM, and the 10-K says its initial public offering of 36,800,000 shares closed on June 13, 2025.
By the company's description, Chime offers FDIC-insured checking and savings accounts "provided through our platform by one of our bank partners," Visa debit cards, secured credit cards, and liquidity products including SpotMe (overdraft-fee-free overdraft up to a limit), MyPay (access to earned pay before payday) and Instant Loans. The 10-K reports 9.5 million Active Members as of December 31, 2025 (the company's own measure).
Bank partners and the Stride acquisition. The two partner banks are The Bancorp Bank, N.A. and Stride Bank, N.A. On September 8, 2026, Chime reported in a Form 8-K that it agreed to acquire Central Service Corporation, the parent company of Stride Bank, N.A., for $590 million, subject to conditions including approval by the Federal Reserve and the OCC. As of October 6, 2026 the 8-K describes an agreement, not a completed deal; the 8-K says Chime expects it "to close in the first half of 2027, subject to the receipt of required regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions." Chime's Help Center says that nothing about members' accounts changes and no action is needed, and that when the acquisition is complete Chime will be a bank holding company.
Other recent news. A Form 8-K dated August 5, 2026 reports a plan adopted July 31, 2026 to reduce about 10 percent of Chime's workforce. The same filing reports that Matthew Newcomb would step down as Chief Financial Officer effective August 7, 2026, and that Mark Troughton, the company's President, was appointed President and Interim Chief Financial Officer from that date while the company searches for a permanent CFO.

Lawsuits and the company's own legal disclosures
Company's disclosure. Chime's 10-K for 2025 and 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 each say the company is "not currently subject to any legal proceedings that, if determined adversely to us, would ... have a material and adverse effect" on its business, results or financial condition. Both state that it is at times subject to class actions and to government and regulatory proceedings.
April 2026 class actions. Three class actions were filed against Chime in the Northern District of California in April 2026 (Castaneda, Porter and Walsh). The complaint in Castaneda v. Chime Financial, Inc. (filed April 3, 2026) alleges that an unauthorized actor accessed Chime's systems on or about April 1, 2026 and caused a widespread outage; it pleads this on information and belief and cites a news report of users having trouble logging in. Those are the plaintiffs' allegations. The Chime filings and Help Center pages checked on 2026-10-06 did not describe such a breach, and no court finding was identified. The docket shows a notice of voluntary dismissal in Castaneda and the case terminated on June 4, 2026; Porter v. Chime Financial, Inc., which the court found related to Castaneda, terminated on May 19, 2026; and the docket in Walsh v. Chime Financial, Inc. (No. 3:26-cv-03278, filed April 17, 2026) shows a notice of voluntary dismissal on June 4, 2026 and the civil case terminated on June 5, 2026 (the Walsh complaint was not opened).
New filings. CourtListener's RECAP search for case name "Chime Financial" showed 84 cases and 1,511 docket entries on 2026-10-06. Among the newest results are Johnson v. Chime Financial, Inc. (N.D. Cal.; docket text: complaint filed 9/25/2026) and Bean v. Chime Financial, Inc. (N.D. Cal.; complaint filed 9/24/2026). The search listings do not state the claims, so they are not described here, and the search does not distinguish consumer cases from other kinds of suits.
Arbitration. The Stride deposit agreement carries a binding-arbitration notice (see the first section), which can affect whether an account dispute proceeds in court or in arbitration.
Is Chime Legitimate?

BBB lists a California DFPI license number (11125-99) for the business and shows it as BBB Accredited with an A+ rating as displayed on 2026-10-06.
The public record also includes two 2024 consent orders, with the CFPB (delayed closed-account refunds) and the California DFPI (complaint handling), each entered without admitting or denying the findings, and thousands of CFPB-database complaints about account management and closures. These are documents to weigh yourself; this page does not assign Chime a score or a verdict.
