Registration and identity. The ButcherBox site names ButcherBox OpCo LLC as its legal entity at 1 Kingsbury Avenue, Watertown, MA 02472, and the Terms of Use are issued by ButcherBox OpCo, LLC. BBB lists ButcherBox, LLC at the same address, with a business start date of March 3, 2015, an A+ rating and accreditation since October 26, 2016. The 2026 James complaint names the defendant as ButcherBox OpCo, LLC and describes it as a Massachusetts limited liability company; the 2019 Johnson complaint described ButcherBox, LLC the same way.
Dispute terms. Section 15 of the Terms requires binding individual arbitration before a single JAMS arbitrator, held in the county where the customer lives, and bars class arbitrations, class actions and other representative proceedings. Individual small claims cases are carved out and may be filed in the small claims court for the county of the customer's billing address. Before either step, each side must give written notice of the dispute within 30 days of the date it arises, sent to ButcherBox by certified mail or courier to ButcherBox OpCo, LLC, Attn: Legal Notices, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472, with the customer's name, postal address, phone number, account email, a description of the problem and the relief sought; the parties then have 30 days to try to settle it. Section 15 also says any dispute or small claims case must be started within one year of the date it arose or the claim is "permanently barred".
Opt-out, law and liability cap. A customer may opt out of arbitration "within thirty (30) days of the date you first accepted the Terms of this Section 15" by a written notice with their full name to ButcherBox OpCo, LLC, Attn: General Counsel, at the Arsenal Street address. Massachusetts law governs (Section 16), and disputes outside arbitration and small claims go to the state or federal courts sitting in Middlesex County, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Section 14 limits the company's liability for products and services to "the greater of $250 or the amount you paid to us in the one (1) month period immediately preceding the date on which your claim arose". How far these clauses can be enforced depends on the customer's state law.
Scope. This page covers ButcherBox of Watertown, Massachusetts, which sells through butcherbox.com. The website butcherbox.ca is a different domain that is not named in ButcherBox OpCo, LLC's Terms of Use, and it is not covered here.

Start with ButcherBox's own channels. Customer service is at (855) 981-8568 and [email protected]; the FAQ page and the Terms of Use give the same number and address for cancellations and delivery problems.

Email leaves a written record, so use it for anything you may need to prove later, and note the order date, what arrived and the name of anyone you speak to.
Cancel or pause. The FAQ page says: "You can pause or cancel your subscription at any time through your Member Account page", in the "Need to pause or cancel?" section.
More detailShow less
An order already in processing still ships, and Section 4(B) makes you responsible for the charges on any order processed before you cancel; the pause or cancellation applies to later orders. The Terms, Section 4(B), say "YOUR SUBSCRIPTION IS CONTINUOUS UNTIL YOU CANCEL IT OR WE SUSPEND OR TERMINATE THE SUBSCRIPTION" and "YOU MAY CANCEL YOUR MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION AT ANY TIME PRIOR TO THE NEXT DATE OF BILLING", and the same section lists three ways to cancel: through your account, by emailing [email protected] or by calling (855) 981-8568. A request made after the bill date is processed for the next scheduled bill date (Section 4(B) and 4(J)), so cancel before the upcoming bill date shown in your Member Account. If a box has already been billed, the Terms hold you responsible for that order; you can still email support to ask whether that shipment can be stopped or credited, and keep their reply. Section 4(D) adds that failing to keep a valid payment method on file does not count as cancelling an order.
Frequency changes. The FAQ page says you can set delivery every 2, 4 or 6 weeks and move your next bill date. A frequency change takes effect after your next scheduled order; to make it apply immediately, change both the frequency and the upcoming bill date.
If a box arrives thawed or damaged. Section 4(G) of the Terms says: "You should always inspect your delivery to confirm that the Products arrive refrigerator cold", defined as "below 40° F as measured with a food thermometer". Section 4(K) says to contact support "within seven (7) days of receipt" with a description and photos. The Refund Policy says ButcherBox may "offer a replacement of the Product in question, credit towards your next box, or a partial/full refund" and may ask for photos of the product label and the damage. Section 4(K) also says "Filing a claim does not guarantee a refund." Keep the shipping box, label and any thermometer reading, and report the same day if you can.
Cases the policy excludes. The Refund Policy says ButcherBox cannot guarantee the condition of a delivery if the address was entered incorrectly, an address change was not made before the bill date, or the order could not be retrieved on the guaranteed delivery date without notice to ButcherBox, and that no refund is issued when thawing or damage results from a late delivery caused by an incorrect address or a missed delivery without prior notice. The Terms add: "We are shipping perishable Product(s) and therefore are not able to accept returns" (Section 4(I)).
Charged after cancelling. Email support the cancellation confirmation, the charge date and the amount, and ask for a refund in writing. If that fails, dispute the charge with your card issuer: for a credit card, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date the first statement showing the charge was sent to dispute it in writing; for a debit card or bank-account charge, Regulation E generally gives you 60 days from the statement showing it to report the error to your bank, so contact the bank as soon as you see the charge.

You can also file a complaint with BBB (bbb.org), with the attorney general of your own state (in California, the California Attorney General's Office at oag.ca.gov), with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office through its online consumer complaint form at mass.gov (the company is based in Massachusetts, where regulation 940 CMR 38.00 requires clear disclosure of automatic subscription charges and of how to cancel them), and with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Meat safety concerns. For illness or a suspected unsafe meat or poultry product, contact the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854), and keep the package and label.
Small claims and arbitration. Most disputes go to individual arbitration under Section 15 of the Terms, but you may bring an individual small claims case in the county of your billing address. Either way, the Terms first require a written notice of the dispute to the company's Legal Notices address, sent within 30 days, and they set a one-year deadline to bring a claim. The Company Information section, under Dispute terms, has the address and the full steps.
Product recall: Perdue chicken nuggets sold as ButcherBox, August 2024
Recall issued by Perdue Foods (ButcherBox-branded nuggets), August 2024. This was a manufacturer's recall announced by the federal meat-safety agency, not an enforcement action against ButcherBox. In August 2024 the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a recall of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken nuggets and tenders produced by Perdue Foods because they may contain pieces of metal wire. NBC News reported that the recall covered 22-ounce ButcherBox organic chicken breast nuggets, 22-ounce Simply Smart Organics nuggets and 29-ounce chicken breast tenders, all with a "best if used by" date of March 23, 2025. According to FSIS and Perdue, there were no confirmed reports of illness or injury, and Perdue said the material was "a very thin strand of metal wire" introduced during manufacturing. FSIS urged consumers not to eat the products and to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

The recall covered about 167,171 pounds of product. FSIS said the metal was found after consumer complaints about wire embedded in the food. The full notice and any later recall are listed on the FSIS recalls page at fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
Legal record: proposed California class actions over automatic renewal and a Washington case
James v. ButcherBox OpCo, LLC (California, 2026). Dallas James filed a proposed class action on February 26, 2026 in the Superior Court of California, County of Orange (Case No. 30-2026-01551170-CU-MT-CXC), against "ButcherBox OpCo, LLC, a Massachusetts limited liability company, d/b/a www.butcherbox.com". The complaint alleges that ButcherBox violated California's Automatic Renewal Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17600 et seq.) by not presenting its renewal terms clearly and conspicuously and by not sending an acknowledgment that customers can keep, showing the renewal terms, the cancellation policy and how to cancel. Top Class Actions reports that the plaintiff bought a subscription in November 2025, says he was charged $152 for a second delivery in December 2025 that he did not authorize, and that the complaint also brings claims under California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act, False Advertising Law and Unfair Competition Law. These are the plaintiff's allegations, not findings by a court, and no class exists unless a court certifies one.

The complaint alleged that ButcherBox, LLC did not send California subscribers an acknowledgment they could keep with the automatic renewal terms, the cancellation policy and how to cancel, in violation of California's Automatic Renewal Law and Unfair Competition Law. These were allegations. The case closed on August 5, 2019; the docket copy does not show whether it was dismissed, settled or ended another way.

Who runs ButcherBox, what it sells and its rewards and delivery terms
Operator. The Terms of Use (last updated February 6, 2025) are issued by "ButcherBox OpCo, LLC or our subsidiaries or other affiliates". The site footer names ButcherBox OpCo LLC at 1 Kingsbury Avenue, Watertown, MA 02472. Legal notices and arbitration opt-out letters go to a second Watertown address, 311 Arsenal Street, under Section 15 of the Terms. BBB lists the business under the name ButcherBox, LLC at the Kingsbury Avenue address.
What it sells. ButcherBox ships boxes of frozen and refrigerated meat and seafood to customers' homes on a subscription schedule. Its FAQ page lists three plan sizes: Medium at $179 (6 proteins, up to 21 lbs), Large at $249 (9 proteins, up to 31 lbs) and Extra-Large at $319 (12 proteins, up to 42 lbs), with add-ons that repeat in every box and one-time member deals sold on top. The About page says the company started in 2015 and describes it as B Corp Certified, with "No antibiotics ever" and "No added hormones, ever" among its sourcing claims; these are the company's own statements.

Leadership and scale. The Boston Globe (January 15, 2026) names Mike Salguero (listed by BBB as Michael Salguero) as chief executive and says he cofounded ButcherBox in 2015. The article reports a partnership placing five fresh grass-fed beef products in nearly 1,500 Target stores, and cites revenue exceeding $570 million and nearly 450,000 U.S. subscribers; those figures come from the newspaper, not from published financial statements.
Rewards program. The ButcherBox Rewards Program Terms (last updated September 30, 2024) cover points and the Sizzle Society tiers. Members earn points on subscription purchases and can redeem 1,000 points for a $10 ButcherBox credit. Points expire if no subscription purchase is made in a rolling six-month period (Section 4(a)), and Section 10 says that when a member cancels, "any and all ButcherBox Points, Sizzle Society Tiers, and Tier Benefits are forfeited."
Delivery. The FAQ page says orders ship 1-4 days after they are placed (or after the bill date for subscription boxes) and arrive within about 2-5 business days of the bill date, packed with dry ice. Carriers typically deliver between 8am and 8pm. No signature is needed, but the box should be refrigerated or frozen as soon as possible: the FAQ says products delivered on time and retrieved within 6-8 hours should be refrigerator cold, below 40°F.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel ButcherBox?
The Terms of Use (Section 4(B)) say you may cancel your monthly subscription at any time before the next billing date, through your account, by email to [email protected] or by phone at (855) 981-8568. A request made after the bill date is processed for the next scheduled bill date. The FAQ page adds that an order already in processing still ships and the cancellation applies to future orders.
Does ButcherBox renew automatically?
The Terms of Use (Section 4(B)) state in capitals: "YOUR SUBSCRIPTION IS CONTINUOUS UNTIL YOU CANCEL IT OR WE SUSPEND OR TERMINATE THE SUBSCRIPTION." They also say the amount charged may vary with the preferences you select. A California class action filed in February 2026 alleges the company's renewal disclosures do not meet California law; those are allegations.
Can I pause or skip a ButcherBox delivery?
The FAQ page says: "You can pause or cancel your subscription at any time through your Member Account page." You can also move your next bill date or switch delivery to every 2, 4 or 6 weeks. A frequency change takes effect after the next scheduled order unless you also change the upcoming bill date, and an order already in processing still ships.
What if my ButcherBox arrives thawed or warm?
Terms Section 4(G) says products should arrive refrigerator cold, below 40° F as measured with a food thermometer, and Section 4(K) says to contact support within seven days of receipt with a description and photos. The Refund Policy lists a replacement, credit toward the next box or a partial or full refund as possible remedies, and Section 4(K) says filing a claim does not guarantee a refund.
Does ButcherBox give refunds or accept returns?
Section 4(I) of the Terms says perishable products cannot be returned. Refunds are handled case by case through support: the Refund Policy says ButcherBox may offer a replacement, credit toward your next box or a partial or full refund, and may ask for photos. It excludes cases where an order was affected by an incorrect address or a missed delivery without notice. Gifts are not refundable or redeemable for cash unless required by law (Section 4(C)).
What is the ButcherBox customer service number?
ButcherBox customer service is at (855) 981-8568 and [email protected], the contacts given on its FAQ page and in its Terms of Use for cancellations, damaged boxes and refunds. Email is the better choice for a claim, because the Terms ask for photos of the damage within seven days of receipt.
Can I sue ButcherBox or join a class action?
Section 15 of the Terms of Use requires individual arbitration for most disputes and says disputes will not be brought as a class arbitration, class action or other representative proceeding. Individual cases in small claims court are carved out and may be filed in the county of your billing address. The opt-out window is 30 days from first accepting Section 15, so it has usually passed for existing members. Before any arbitration or small claims case, the Terms require written notice of the dispute and a 30-day period to resolve it, and they set a one-year limit for bringing a claim; the Company Information section of this page gives the addresses. Whether a class waiver is enforced can depend on state law.
Has ButcherBox had a product recall?
In August 2024 the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a recall of Perdue Foods chicken nuggets and tenders for possible metal wire; the products included 22-ounce ButcherBox organic chicken breast nuggets with a best-if-used-by date of March 23, 2025. FSIS and Perdue reported no confirmed illness or injury.
What happens to my Sizzle Society points if I cancel?
Section 10 of the Loyalty Program Terms says that when a subscription is cancelled, "any and all ButcherBox Points, Sizzle Society Tiers, and Tier Benefits are forfeited." Points also expire after six months without a subscription purchase (Section 4(a)).
