Buc-ee's returns, refunds, pump holds and contact routes: what to do (checked October 7, 2026)

Start with the company's own route. Buc-ee's says its store phone numbers are unlisted: 'We previously had phones in the stores which were answered by the cashiers... we thought it would be better to direct comments to the website.' The Contact page (https://buc-ees.com/contact/) is a web form with an inquiry-type menu that includes 'Disputed transaction', 'Debit or credit hold', 'Returns, exchanges, or damaged items', 'Safety concern', 'Lost item' and 'Video request'. The page asks you to read the FAQ first. Keep the receipt, store number and time of the transaction before you write.

Returns and exchanges. The company's FAQ says: 'General Merchandise (except for game cameras) may be exchanged if in new condition and with all original tags, for General Merchandise (not gift cards) of equal or greater value.' It adds that 'Slightly consumed food may be exchanged for the same item when the original item does not meet our standards' and that 'All exchanges require Manager authorization.' The FAQ describes exchanges (against merchandise of equal or greater value), not cash refunds; the sources checked on October 7, 2026 do not state a general refund promise. Complaints on the BBB profile describe being refused when an item turned out to be defective after it was worn or used; those are consumers' allegations and the company has not answered them there.

Card holds at the pump. The FAQ explains that pumps are authorized 'typically from $75 to more than $200' depending on card type, that if $40 of fuel is pumped against a $100 authorization 'there will be a $40.00 charge and a $100.00 hold', and that holds are decided by the card issuer. The company's own pages give two different durations: the FAQ says 'Holds can last for up to 72 hours', while the Contact page says 'Holds can last for up to 30 days'. Your card issuer can tell you how long a hold on your account lasts.

Disputed or unexpected charges. The Contact page asks you to include 'the date and approximate time, the receipt number, the last 4 digits of the credit or debit card' and the items you recall (type, brand, model, size, color, UPC code) so the company can look at the video recording, and notes that a pump purchase and an in-store purchase appear as two separate transactions on a statement. Use the form's 'Disputed transaction' or 'Debit or credit hold' option for this review. Separately, and as general guidance rather than a Buc-ee's policy, cardholders can also ask their card issuer about its own dispute process for a charge they do not recognize.

Car wash codes. The Car Wash FAQ says the fuel-discount wash code is printed on the pump receipt, 'Codes are good for 365 days. All sales final.' Vacuum codes are good for 30 days. If you bought a wash by mistake, the FAQ does not state a refund route; ask in the store or use the Contact form.

Gift cards and the Buc-ee's credit card. The FAQ says gift cards 'Cannot be used for fuel after April 1, 2027' and links ordering to buc-ees.cashstar.com. The FAQ answers 'Does Buc-ee's offer a personal credit card?' by linking to an application page at tdecu.org; for questions about a card account, see the issuer's own card terms, which this page did not open.

Video and safety. The FAQ says a copy of store video can be requested through the police if you report a crime or extraordinary circumstance and the department takes your case. For privacy requests (access, correction, deletion) the Privacy Policy (effective March 18, 2025) gives [email protected].

Outside routes. A complaint can be filed with BBB (Buc-ee's has publicly said it does not respond to complaints forwarded by BBB, according to BBB's statement on the profile), with the Texas Attorney General's consumer complaint form (the page notes that under Texas law a complaint is open to the public), or, for a suspected pump or pricing overcharge in Texas, with the Texas Department of Agriculture Weights and Measures team, which says it 'investigates all complaints from any person who believes they may have been overcharged in a commercial transaction' (phone (512) 463-7698, email [email protected]). Outside Texas, use the consumer agency of the state where the store is. Unsafe products can be reported at SaferProducts.gov.

Regulator and recall records checked on October 7, 2026

CPSC. Querying the CPSC recall data service on October 7, 2026 by manufacturer, retailer, title and product name for 'Buc-ee' returned one record: CPSC recall 23156 (March 16, 2023), in which Fredericksburg Farms (Fredericksburg Distribution, Fredericksburg, Texas) recalled 10-ounce scented candles with glass lids. CPSC says some lids 'are too tight causing the jar to break when the lid is forcibly removed, posing a laceration hazard'; the remedy is a full refund from Fredericksburg Farms. CPSC lists 'Buc-ee's stores and other smaller gift shops' among the places sold from October 2022 through February 2023. This was a recall of another company's product; Buc-ee's is named only as a retailer. No recall of a Buc-ee's-branded product was identified in this query.

FDA. A search of the openFDA food and drug enforcement-report databases by recalling firm and product description for 'Buc-ee' on October 7, 2026 returned no matching record. This search covers FDA enforcement reports only, not every state action.

Attorney general, FTC and state agencies. This page did not search the FTC's case database or any state attorney general's enforcement list for Buc-ee's; the checks on October 7, 2026 were limited to the CPSC recall data service, openFDA enforcement reports, news searches and the court dockets below, and none of those returned an FTC or attorney-general action. Neither a news search nor a docket search is an agency enforcement database.

Who Buc-ee's is

Identity. The Privacy Policy (effective March 18, 2025) names 'Buc-ee's, Ltd., and its affiliates and subsidiaries'. BBB shows the business as Buc-ee's, Ltd. at 327 FM 2004, Lake Jackson, TX 77566, with Mr. Don Wasek and Mr. Arch Aplin III listed as business management, and 'Buc-ees' as an alternate name. The company says on its About page that it has operated 'ever since our inception in 1982'.

Ownership and model. The FAQ says 'Buc-ee's is privately owned' with no plans to go public, and that it does not offer franchises. Court dockets show store-level operating companies named after states, for example 'Buc-ee's Kentucky, LLC' and 'Buc-ee's Georgia, LLC' (see the litigation section), so the entity that runs a particular store may be a state-named subsidiary of the parent.

Stores. The Locations page lists numbered stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado and other states; the FAQ says all stores are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The company's News & Press page lists openings including Ohio (April 2026) and Virginia (2025). Buc-ee's says it has no online store of its own and that third-party resellers of Buc-ee's items are 'not affiliated with, authorized, sponsored, or endorsed by Buc-ee's'. Buyers of Buc-ee's-branded items online should treat the company's own FAQ as the statement of what is official.

Complaint figures as displayed on October 7, 2026

BBB, as displayed on October 7, 2026. BBB profile for Buc-ee's, Ltd., Lake Jackson (category Convenience Store): not BBB Accredited; rating F; 95 total complaints in the last 3 years and 28 closed in the last 12 months; 1.97/5 from an average of 63 customer reviews. BBB gives the reason for the rating as 'Failure to respond to 95 complaint(s) filed against business'. BBB's own statement on the profile says its rating system encourages businesses to respond to complaints forwarded by BBB, that Buc-ee's 'has publicly stated that it does not respond to complaints forwarded by BBB', and that 'many respected companies' choose not to take part; BBB says the rating 'reflects that decision not to participate'. The BBB file was opened in 2005 (page data: 2005-09-02). BBB also lists many store-level files, which show F in search results; they are not combined here.

What BBB's alert and the complaint list describe. A BBB alert on the profile says that since March 2019 BBB Houston has received complaints and reviews in which consumers say they could not reach the company by phone, that website inquiries went unanswered, and that managers said they could not help. It gives examples attributed to consumers: a 2023 allegation about a limit of two returned items per receipt, a charge of $82.69 on a $17 purchase (March 2023), a pump charge with no fuel dispensed (May 2025) and a refund refusal on a car wash bought by mistake (March 2025). These are allegations reported by BBB, not findings. The most recent complaints listed on the complaints tab (August 2026 and July 2026) show status 'Unanswered'.

The company's position. Buc-ee's FAQ states that store phones were removed because cashiers on the phone left customers waiting, that exchanges require manager authorization, and that pump holds are set by card issuers. Buc-ee's has not, in the sources checked, published a response to the BBB alert.

Trustpilot. The buc-ees.com profile on Trustpilot is unclaimed and shows 3.7 from one review, which is too few to describe anything.

This site's archive. No approved post in this site's archive of complaints was identified as being about Buc-ee's on October 7, 2026 (searches of offender, title and text by name variants; unrelated 'Bucky's' and similar names were excluded). BBB, Trustpilot and this archive are different sources and are not combined.

Court dockets involving Buc-ee's entities

What the search shows. A CourtListener (RECAP) search for case names containing 'Buc-ee' returned 56 results on October 7, 2026. The 20 most recent listings, filed between March 2025 and September 2026, fall into three kinds: (1) trademark cases brought by Buc-ee's Ltd. against other businesses (for example Born United LLC in South Carolina, Coles IP Holdings, LLC in Ohio, Owl & Anchor LLC in Arizona, Hanes Road Carryout, Inc. in Ohio and Teddys Market, LLC in Georgia), listed under Nature of Suit 840 Trademark for most; (2) individual injury or premises cases against state-named Buc-ee's LLCs (for example in Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and South Carolina), several of them removals to federal court; and (3) one Americans with Disabilities Act case (Rice-McGarity v. Buc-ee's, Ltd., M.D. Fla., filed June 1, 2026, terminated August 3, 2026 per the listing). The listing does not show the facts of the injury cases and this page does not describe them. A docket search by name is not a complete list of every state-court case.

Consumer class actions. No consumer class action against Buc-ee's was identified among the listings reviewed on October 7, 2026; this is a scoped finding about those listings only.

Coles IP Holdings (N.D. Ohio, No. 3:26-cv-00414). Buc-ee's, Ltd. filed this trademark case on February 18, 2026 against Coles IP Holdings, LLC and Danop, Ltd. (owner of the Mickey's convenience-store chain, according to a USA TODAY report dated October 6, 2026). The docket minutes of a settlement conference held September 15, 2026 before Magistrate Judge Darrell A. Clay say the discussions 'led to a confidential agreement on the material terms of a resolution as set forth in a Binding Term Sheet' and that 'The parties are to submit a joint entry dismissing this matter with prejudice within 30 days.' The settlement terms are not stated in the record read for this page, and this page does not say which side prevailed. Coles IP Holdings filed a counterclaim in April 2026, according to the same report; the status of a dismissal entry after September 25, 2026 was not checked.

Trademark enforcement example. In Buc-ee's Ltd. v. Born United LLC (D.S.C., No. 2:25-cv-04537), the docket shows an amended complaint filed February 6, 2026 listing eight U.S. trademark registrations, a 'Judgment Based on ADR Settlement' on August 18, 2026 and an order on a motion for that judgment on August 19, 2026. A news report dated September 11, 2026 says Born United was ordered to stop selling clothing with an unauthorized version of the beaver logo and that Buc-ee's was awarded $850,000; the amount was not read from the court order for this page. For shoppers, the practical point is that the company defends its logo, and the FAQ says third-party sellers are not endorsed by it.

Is Buc-ee's Legitimate?

Buc-ee's, Ltd. is named in the company's own Privacy Policy and appears on BBB at 327 FM 2004, Lake Jackson, Texas, with a BBB file opened in 2005. The company says it has operated since 1982, that it is privately owned and that its stores are open around the clock. BBB shows it as not accredited with an F rating that BBB attributes to unanswered complaints, and BBB says the company has publicly said it will not respond to complaints forwarded by BBB. The company publishes a web contact form, a FAQ with its return, hold and gift-card terms, and a privacy-request email, but no customer-service phone number. No FTC or state attorney general action appeared in the news, docket, CPSC and openFDA checks made on October 7, 2026 (those agencies' own enforcement lists were not searched), and CPSC lists Buc-ee's as a retailer (not the recalling firm) in one 2023 candle recall. Whether a particular refund or exchange will be granted depends on the facts of the purchase and the store manager's decision, which this page does not predict.

Why is there a hold on my card after I bought gas at Buc-ee's?

Buc-ee's FAQ says pumps are authorized for an amount typically from $75 to more than $200 depending on card type, that only the amount pumped is charged, and that holds are the card issuer's decision. Its FAQ says holds can last up to 72 hours, while its Contact page says up to 30 days. If you were charged and no fuel was dispensed, file a 'Disputed transaction' inquiry on the Contact form with the date, approximate time, receipt number and last 4 digits of the card; a BBB alert cites a May 2025 consumer allegation of that kind.

Why does BBB show Buc-ee's with an F rating?

Does Buc-ee's sell its merchandise online?

The company's FAQ says it does not have its own online store and that third-party resellers (it names texassnax.com and amazon.com as examples of such services) are not affiliated with, authorized, sponsored or endorsed by Buc-ee's. Buc-ee's has sued businesses over its logo; see the litigation section.

Who owns Buc-ee's, and is it publicly traded?

The FAQ says Buc-ee's is privately owned, with no plans to become publicly traded, and that it does not offer franchises. BBB lists Mr. Don Wasek and Mr. Arch Aplin III as business management for Buc-ee's, Ltd. in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Where can I report a pump or pricing overcharge at a Texas Buc-ee's?

The Texas Department of Agriculture's Weights and Measures team says it investigates complaints from any person who believes they were overcharged in a commercial transaction; it lists (512) 463-7698 and [email protected] and asks for the name and address where the alleged violation occurred. The Texas Attorney General also takes consumer complaints through an online form and notes that under Texas law a complaint is open to the public.
