Operator. The website footer names Bright Capital Inc, 50 California St, Suite 1621, San Francisco, CA 94111, and says secured lines of credit are made by Bright Capital Inc, NMLS 2410428. The Terms of Use (last updated July 3, 2026) are "provided by Bright Capital Inc." Bright's state licenses page names Bright Money, Inc. as the entity holding state registrations and licenses, and lists Bright Money as its registered business name (DBA) in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas and Tennessee.
State licenses listed by Bright. The licenses page lists a Consumer Lender License and a Collection Agency License in Arizona, a Collection Agency License in Colorado, a Consumer Lender License in Delaware, a Regulated Lender License in Idaho, a Master Loan Company Registration and a nonresident branch license in Iowa, a Supervised Loan License in Kansas, and an Industrial Loan and Thrift Company Registration in Tennessee, each with a number shown on that page.
Banks behind the accounts. The footer says deposit accounts are provided by Evolve Bank & Trust and Continental Bank, Members FDIC. The Terms of Use also describe a deposit account and secured line of credit account at CBW Bank, Member FDIC, and say complaints about CBW Bank services go to CBW Bank, PO Box 287, Weir, KS 66781; for Evolve Bank services the Terms give [email protected], and for Continental Bank they give Bright's phone number and support email. Bright says it does not hold the funds in these accounts.
Contract terms. The Terms of Use contain a binding arbitration provision and class-action waiver. Under "Dispute Resolution," claims are resolved by arbitration under the American Arbitration Association's Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes, together with the AAA Commercial Arbitration Rules where they apply, at the AAA regional office nearest you, under California law and the Federal Arbitration Act, on an individual basis only. The Terms of Use do not provide a way to opt out of arbitration. If the AAA fees and deposits you are required to pay exceed $125 and you cannot pay them, the Terms say Bright may forward them to the AAA for you, subject to the arbitrator's final allocation. Item 3 of the "Miscellaneous" section says any claim related to the Services, the App or the Terms "must be filed within one (1) year after such claim or cause of action arose or be forever barred," and the Limitation of Liability section caps Bright's maximum liability to you at $1,000, to the extent permitted by law. These are contract terms between you and Bright; the federal deadlines for disputing a charge with your card issuer or bank, described in the section on cancelling and escalating, are set by law separately.

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot, CFPB and posts on this site
BBB. The BBB profile for Bright Money in San Francisco shows a B rating and BBB accreditation since February 15, 2022, with 799 complaints in the last 3 years, 335 of them in the last 12 months, and an average of 4.27 out of 5 from 527 customer reviews. BBB gives the number of complaints filed as the reason for the rating.
BBB alert and the company's response. The BBB profile carries an alert about the complaints it receives. According to BBB, a review of complaints in October 2024 found that they mainly relate to charges for the $97.00 membership fee. Bright's pricing page lists $97 as the price of a 12-month Premium plan. In a response dated December 3, 2024 that BBB publishes with the alert, Bright Money said its pricing is shown on its website and during sign-up, that users choose a plan during onboarding and must agree to the Membership Terms and Conditions before the membership starts, and that it was introducing an additional mention of Bright Membership in the sign-up flow.
CFPB. The CFPB Consumer Complaint Database lists 205 complaints naming Bright Capital Inc, the company behind Bright Money, received from May 2022 to September 2026, 47 of them in the last 12 months. The most common products are debt or credit management, checking or savings accounts and credit reporting; the most common issues are upfront or unexpected fees, incorrect information on a credit report and problems with a company charging the consumer's account. Bright Capital closed 203 complaints with an explanation, 1 with monetary relief and 1 with non-monetary relief, and responded on time to 187. The CFPB advises considering company size and market share when looking at complaint volume.
Trustpilot. The claimed Trustpilot page for brightmoney.co shows a TrustScore of 4.9 out of 5 from 15,550 reviews.
BBB, CFPB and Trustpilot count different things, and their figures are not added together here.

Submit a ComplaintBright Money: how to cancel, get a refund and escalate a charge
Who to contact. Bright Money support is at 1-877-274-6494 (Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM CST, per its Contact us page), at [email protected], and through in-app chat, which the Help Center says is open 24 hours.
More detailShow less
The Terms of Use also say a written complaint can be sent to [email protected] and that Bright will review it and reply in writing.
Cancel a Premium Membership. The Help Center says to open the Bright app and go to Settings, Account Info, Membership, Cancel Membership, or to ask support by chat, email or phone.
More detailShow less
The Terms of Use (section "Cancellation of Premium Membership") say the cancellation takes effect immediately or at the end of the current term, and that you must say in your email that you want it immediate, otherwise it takes effect on the last date of the term. After cancelling you step down to Basic Membership until you delete the account. Deleting the app does not delete the account; the Terms ("Termination") say to email support to close it.
Fees to know about. Bright's pricing page lists Basic at $0, Starter at $5 a month, and Premium at $14 a month, $39 for 3 months, $68 for 6 months or $97 for 12 months; the Terms of Use list the same Premium prices and describe the $5 plan as "without Smart Round Ups". Bright's site says a Premium Membership auto-renews until you cancel it, so a 3-, 6- or 12-month plan is charged again for a new term unless you cancel before the current one ends. The Terms add a Basic Membership Administrative Fee of $11 a month if a Basic member keeps a non-zero balance in Bright Accounts, starting 30 days after a downgrade; withdrawing the funds within those 30 days avoids it.
Rent Reporting and small test charges. Rent Reporting is a separate add-on: $35 once for up to 24 months of past rent and $4 a month ongoing. The Terms say Bright may charge the add-on fee even if the customer has not completed the Rent Reporting application or has not been approved, and that Bright sends reminders by email and in the app to complete the application. To cancel only Rent Reporting, the Help Center and the Terms say to email [email protected] with the subject line "Cancel Rent Reporting Services." Small offsetting entries on your linked bank account can also come from Bright: the Terms say that if there has been no activity with Bright for 30 days, it may make up to two credit and debit transactions of $0.01 each a month to confirm the account is active, netting to zero, and that you can opt out by contacting [email protected].
Ask for a refund. The Help Center says to use the "Request Refund" link from the Bright app on a mobile device (it does not work on the website) after updating the app, or to contact support, and says refunds typically take 3-5 business days. The Terms of Use ("Refund for Membership Fees") are narrower: if you cancel less than 30 days from the start of a quarterly, half-yearly or annual membership, the refund is prorated, and "you are not eligible for any refund for any Membership term post the 14 days of payment." Rent Reporting refunds follow the same 14-day cutoff. The Help Center says a request may be denied if it falls outside Bright's policy terms or if the membership transaction failed or was not processed. Because the Terms bar refunds after 14 days from payment, ask within 14 days of the charge where you can; put the request in writing with the charge date and amount, and keep the reply.
If the charge is still unresolved. If you paid with a credit card, you can dispute a billing error with the card issuer under the Fair Credit Billing Act: the FTC says your letter must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first bill showing the error was sent to you, at the address for billing inquiries, not the payment address. For a debit card payment or a debit from your bank account that you believe is an error or unauthorized, notify your bank: under the CFPB's Regulation E, the bank must investigate an error notice it receives within 60 days after it sends the statement that first shows the charge, and it may ask you to confirm a phone notice in writing within 10 business days.

You can also file a complaint with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, file with BBB, and contact your state attorney general or state financial regulator. Bright Money is a financial technology company, not a bank, so the bank behind a deposit account or credit line has its own complaint channel (see the Company Information section).

Bright Builder and your credit report. If Bright Builder reports something you believe is wrong, dispute it in writing with both the credit bureau and Bright; the FTC publishes sample letters for each. For the Bright Builder line of credit, the product page says you can pay it off or close it at any time, and that the security deposit becomes accessible only after the line is closed and any balance is cleared; the closing terms are in the credit agreement in the app. For the Bright Builder Card, the Help Center says you close it in the app or through support, that Bright uses the deposit to pay any balance and returns the rest to your linked checking account, that there is no closing fee, and that reporting to the bureaus stops. The Help Center also says the card is unrelated to Bright Membership, so cancelling a membership does not close it; close each one separately.
What Bright Money is and what each product does
What the company is. Bright Money is a mobile app and website from Bright Capital Inc, San Francisco. Bright's footer says it is "a financial technology company, not a bank." Its products are a secured credit line called Bright Builder, a membership with budgeting and debt tools, Rent Reporting, and a marketplace that connects users with outside lenders and cash-advance providers.
Bright Builder. The Bright Builder page describes a secured line of credit that starts with a $50 deposit, with a minimum monthly payment of $10 or 50 percent of the outstanding balance, whichever is less, and payments reported to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Its FAQ says there are no interest fees and no hard credit pull, that late or missed payments are also reported, and that Premium Membership is not required. The deposit can be accessed only after you close the line and clear any remaining balance. The footer states these lines are made by Bright Capital Inc, NMLS 2410428, subject to state residency, that Bright Builder is not available in all states, and that Bright "currently does not offer Unsecured Lines of Credit (Bright Credit) to new customers."

The Help Center describes a Bright Builder Card. Bright's Help Center answers questions about a "Bright Builder Card", a secured Visa card that Bright says it provides with Evolve Bank & Trust and Visa: a deposit of at least $30 that becomes the credit limit, a $2 monthly fee, a $15 late fee, 0% APR, reporting to Equifax and TransUnion 30 days after the statement due date, and availability in all states. The product page describes a secured line of credit with different figures, and neither page says which customers hold which version. The fees that apply to your account are the ones in the credit agreement shown in the app.
Personal loans and cash advances. Bright's Help Center says it is not a lender for either: it connects users with independent third-party providers, which make all approval, rate and fee decisions, and Bright "may receive compensation" if you proceed. Offers of up to $10,000 for loans and up to $750 for cash advances are the providers' amounts, and approval is not guaranteed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel my Bright Money Premium Membership?
In the Bright app, go to Settings, Account Info, Membership, Cancel Membership, or contact support at 1-877-274-6494, [email protected] or in-app chat. The Terms of Use say that to cancel immediately you must say so in your email; otherwise the cancellation takes effect on the last day of the current term. Bright's site says Premium auto-renews until you cancel, so cancel before the current term ends to avoid a charge for the next one. After cancelling you move to Basic Membership until you delete the account.
Can I get a refund for a Bright Money membership charge?
The Terms of Use say a cancellation less than 30 days after the start of a quarterly, half-yearly or annual membership is refunded pro rata, and that there is no refund for a membership term after 14 days from payment. The Help Center says to use the "Request Refund" link in the mobile app or contact support, with refunds typically taking 3-5 business days. Ask support in writing which policy applies to your charge.
How much does Bright Money cost?
Bright's pricing page lists Basic at $0, Starter at $5 a month and Premium at $14 a month, $39 for 3 months, $68 for 6 months or $97 for 12 months. Rent Reporting is an add-on of $35 once for past rent and $4 a month. The Terms of Use add an $11 monthly administrative fee for a Basic member who keeps a non-zero balance in Bright Accounts.
What is Bright Builder and who issues it?
Bright Builder is a secured line of credit funded by a security deposit. The product page gives a deposit starting at $50, no interest fees and reporting to all three bureaus, and its footer says these lines are made by Bright Capital Inc, NMLS 2410428. The Terms of Use also describe a deposit account and secured line of credit account at CBW Bank, and the Help Center describes a Bright Builder Card, a secured Visa card provided with Evolve Bank & Trust and Visa, with a $30 minimum deposit, a $2 monthly fee and a $15 late fee. The lender for your own account is the one named in the credit agreement shown in the app; for the card, the Help Center says it appears on a credit report as Bright Capital Inc or Bright/CBW. Complaints go first to Bright support, and the Terms list separate complaint contacts for CBW Bank and Evolve Bank.
Which credit bureaus does Bright Builder report to?
The current Bright Builder product page says payments are reported to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and that late or missed payments are reported too. Help Center answers about the Bright Builder Card, a secured Visa card, name Equifax and TransUnion, say reporting happens 30 days after the statement due date, and say the account appears on a credit report as Bright Capital Inc or Bright/CBW.
Is Bright Money a lender for personal loans and cash advances?
Bright's Help Center says it is not a lender for personal loans or cash advances. It connects users with independent providers, which set the rates, fees and approval, and Bright may be paid if a user proceeds with an offer.
Does Bright Money require arbitration?
The Terms of Use (last updated July 3, 2026) contain an arbitration provision and class-action waiver: claims go to individual arbitration under the AAA Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes, with the AAA Commercial Arbitration Rules where they apply, under California law. The Dispute Resolution section does not mention an opt-out window.
Where can I complain about Bright Money?
Start with support at [email protected]; the Terms of Use say Bright will respond to a complaint in writing. You can then file with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, file with BBB, report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, or contact your state attorney general or state financial regulator. For a credit card charge, a billing-error dispute must reach your card issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent to you. Complaints about bank services go where the Terms of Use direct: CBW Bank by mail at PO Box 287, Weir, KS 66781, Evolve Bank at [email protected], and Continental Bank through Bright's support line and email.
Why was I charged for Rent Reporting?
Rent Reporting is a paid add-on to Premium Membership: $35 once for up to 24 months of past rent and $4 a month ongoing. The Terms of Use say Bright may charge the fee even if the customer has not completed the application or been approved. To stop it, email [email protected] with the subject line "Cancel Rent Reporting Services."
