Beem problems: cancel a subscription, stop a charge, get help

Start with Beem's own channels. Beem's Help Centre is at help.trybeem.com, support is at [email protected], and the Terms give +1 (323) 641-4224 for questions about transfers and errors. Write down the date, the amount and the plan you were charged for.

Cancel a subscription. Beem's cancellation guide gives these steps in the app: profile icon in the top right, Current Plan, Manage Plan, Cancel Plan. On the website, log in at trybeem.com, select Cancel Subscription on the home page and confirm.

More detailShow less

Section 8.4 of the Terms also lets you tell Beem by email at [email protected] that you do not want to renew, which is a useful written record if the app or website flow does not let you finish. Beem's cancellation policy page advises checking that the plan then shows as canceled and taking a screenshot of the confirmation screen; keep it, along with any email, as proof. The Terms (Section 8.4) say: "Cancelling your subscription stops it from automatically renewing at the end of your current billing cycle." The same section says cancelling takes effect only when dues are paid: "Your subscription would be canceled once all the outstanding dues are settled." If the subscription was bought through Apple or Google, Beem's guide says to cancel it in your phone's subscription settings, and that deleting the app does not cancel it.

If you have an unpaid Everdraft. Section 8.4 warns: "if you withdraw Everdraft after canceling but before the expiry/renewal date, your subscription will automatically renew." Section 8.7 adds that with an active Everdraft "you must settle the amount due, before cancelling the subscription or deactivating the account."

Close the account. Beem's Help Centre says to cancel the subscription first and let the cycle end, then choose Deactivate Account on the home page at trybeem.com. A deactivated account can be restored by logging in within 90 days; to deactivate before the subscription end date, the article says to email [email protected] from the registered address.

Debit card stuck in verification. Everdraft needs a verified debit card on the primary bank account. Beem's Help Centre says verification places a $0.57 charge that is refunded once it completes and usually takes up to 24 hours; if it takes longer, Beem asks for your latest bank statement in PDF showing the $0.57 debit, sent to [email protected]. Repeated linking attempts can cause extra temporary debits.

Refunds. Section 9 of the Terms says the subscription fee, instant-transfer fees and late fees "are non-refundable. However, Beem at its discretion and based on request for financial hardship waiver provided by customer, may choose to waive one or more of these fees." Section 8.5 says a late-fee waiver can be requested from the app in case of financial hardship.

A debit you did not expect. Several routes apply, each with its own deadline:

  • Revoke the authorization with Beem: Section 10 of the Terms says the authorization to debit your payment method stays in force until you revoke it by emailing [email protected] at least three business days before the scheduled debit.
  • Stop the payment at your bank: under Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.10(c)), you can stop a preauthorized electronic transfer by telling your bank at least three business days before the scheduled date.
  • A debit you never authorized: report it to your bank promptly; Regulation E (12 CFR 1005.6) limits your liability when you report within 60 days after the bank sends the statement showing it.
  • A charge on a credit card: dispute it in writing with the card issuer within 60 days of the statement, under the Fair Credit Billing Act.
  • An error on a Beem transfer: Section 24.9 of the Terms says to call or email Beem no later than 90 days after the statement or receipt; Beem investigates within 10 business days, which can be extended to 45 days.

If Beem does not resolve it. File a complaint with the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint (the CFPB says it sends the complaint to the company and that most companies respond within 15 days).

California residents can also contact the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI), which Beem's Terms name as a place to send concerns, at 1-866-275-2677 or dfpi.ca.gov/submit-a-complaint. (The number printed in Beem's Terms, 1-866-275-2577, differs from the one DFPI publishes.) Other routes: your state attorney general, the BBB, and ReportFraud.ftc.gov for deceptive practices.

How Beem works: plans, fees, Everdraft and the Beem Card

Plans and prices. Beem's Pricing page lists four plans: Lite $1.99 a month, Basic $3.99, Plus $6.99 and Pro $13.99, with Everdraft access of $10, up to $50, up to $100 and up to $1,000 respectively, and instant withdrawal to a debit card starting at 99 cents on Lite, $4 on Basic and Plus, and $2 on Pro. The Terms describe the price differently: Section 8.4 says paid plans start "as low as $2.47/month," and Section 8.1.a says activating the credit-builder card may occur through "an eligible Beem subscription plan (currently priced at $5.97 or higher)" or by funding the account with a minimum deposit. Check the price shown at checkout against these pages.

How billing works. Under Section 8.4, Beem deducts the subscription from the linked bank account or debit card, and "You will be billed for your first Subscription on a monthly basis and always upfront." The next month's fee is collected in advance as soon as Beem detects funds in the account, the fee "will be charged regardless of the status of your connection," and a failed charge is retried together with the next month's subscription "irrespective of the balance in your Linked Bank Account or Debit Card." If all attempts fail, Beem may charge another connected account or card. Late fees are $5 for each missed subscription, capped at $15 in total (Section 8.5; Help Centre article on late fees), applicable when the subscription is not paid within 7 days after the end of the cycle.

Everdraft. Section 8.1.f says Everdraft amounts of $5 to $1,000 are advanced in lieu of deposits you are entitled to, with "no fee," no credit check, no interest and no due date, and that repayment is taken automatically when funds arrive. Beem "warrants it will not engage in any debt collection activities, place the amount owed with or sell to a third party, or report you to a consumer reporting agency," but "will not provide you further Everdrafts while any amount remains un-settled." The Help Centre lists the requirements: an active account, a connected U.S. checking account, an eligible subscription plan, a verified debit card and no pending dues. Debit-card verification places a $0.57 charge that the Help Centre says is refunded on completion and usually takes up to 24 hours.

Banking and card partners. Section 8.1.a says the deposit account and line of credit are provided by Cross River Bank, Member FDIC, "in collaboration with our partner Upward Financial Inc.," described as the program manager and administrator of the Beem Card. The Terms state that Beem is "not currently licensed by the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation" of California.

Credit reporting. The Terms say the Beem Card account activity "may be reported to one or more credit bureaus, including Experian and/or Equifax," by Upward Financial Inc. Beem's own cancellation guide refers to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion and says ongoing reporting stops when the subscription ends. The two pages differ; ask Beem or Upward which bureaus receive your data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cancel Beem?

In the app: profile icon, Current Plan, Manage Plan, Cancel Plan. On the website: log in at trybeem.com, select Cancel Subscription and confirm. The Terms say cancelling stops automatic renewal at the end of the current billing cycle (Section 8.4). Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google are cancelled in the phone's subscription settings. You can also email [email protected] that you do not want to renew (Section 8.4). Keep a screenshot of the confirmation screen as proof.

Why can't I cancel Beem while I owe money?

The Terms say the subscription "would be canceled once all the outstanding dues are settled" (Section 8.4) and that an active Everdraft must be settled before cancelling or deactivating (Section 8.7). Beem's cancellation guide says the cancellation flow flags any unpaid Everdraft balance, and that you can cancel once it is repaid.

Does Beem refund subscription fees?

Section 9 of the Terms calls the subscription fee, instant-transfer fees and late fees non-refundable, while allowing Beem to waive them at its discretion on a financial-hardship request. Beem's cancellation policy page adds that refunds are not automatic and depend on the type of charge.

How much does Beem cost?

The Pricing page lists Lite at $1.99 a month, Basic at $3.99, Plus at $6.99 and Pro at $13.99. The Terms mention paid plans "as low as $2.47/month" and a card-activation plan "currently priced at $5.97 or higher." Late fees are $5 per missed subscription, capped at $15.

Does Beem Everdraft charge interest or require repayment?

Section 8.1.f of the Terms says Everdraft has no interest, no credit check and no due date, that repayment is taken automatically when funds arrive in the linked account, and that Beem will not use debt collection or credit reporting for an unsettled Everdraft. Beem charges no fee to access an Everdraft, but an optional instant-transfer fee applies if you want the money faster (Section 24.5); the Pricing page lists instant transfers starting at 99 cents.

How do I dispute a Beem charge?

Section 24.9 of the Terms tells customers to call +1 (323) 641-4224 or email [email protected] within 90 days of the statement and describe the error and amount. Beem says it determines whether an error occurred within 10 business days, or up to 45 days with a provisional credit. For a debit you never authorized, also notify your own bank within 60 days of the statement; unresolved disputes can go to the CFPB.

Does Beem report to the credit bureaus?

The Terms say Beem Card activity may be reported by Upward Financial Inc. to Experian and/or Equifax. Beem's cancellation guide names Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Everdraft is described in the Terms as not reported to a consumer reporting agency when unsettled.

How many CFPB complaints are there about Beem?

The CFPB database lists 38 complaints under "Line Financial, PBC," 33 of them filed under payday, title, personal or advance loan; 20 were closed with monetary relief and 18 with explanation. The database does not verify them.

Can I sue Beem or join a class action?

The Terms require individual arbitration through AAA or JAMS and bar class proceedings, with small-claims court allowed. A customer could opt out within 60 days of accepting the Terms by written notice to [email protected] (Section 22.3).
