Avant complaints and reviews: BBB, CFPB, Trustpilot and ComplaintsBoard

Each site counts something different, so the figures are shown separately and not added together; none of these sites verifies the underlying claims.

  • BBB (Avant, LLC, Chicago): BBB Accredited since March 2015, rating A+, 824 complaints in the last 3 years and 240 customer reviews. A BBB rating reflects how a business handles complaints and other BBB criteria, not customer satisfaction.
  • CFPB Consumer Complaint Database: 3,163 complaints filed under Avant Holding Company, Inc. The largest product groups, by the database's own labels, are credit card (922), credit reporting or other personal consumer reports (810), credit card or prepaid card (500), debt collection (391), and credit reporting, credit repair services or other personal consumer reports (272); personal-loan categories account for about 250 more. Avant's recorded responses are closed with explanation (3,130), closed with monetary relief (15), closed with non-monetary relief (1) and in progress (17). Older complaints, up to early 2021, are filed under the former company name Avant Credit Corporation (632). The CFPB says its complaint data is not a statistical sample.

Avant payment, card and credit-reporting problems: who to contact and how to escalate

Avant-branded loans and cards are issued by WebBank, but Avant, or one of its servicing partners, handles payments, questions and disputes, so start with Avant. Its support site lists these routes.

  • Personal loans: 800-712-5407 or [email protected], Monday to Friday 7:00am-10:00pm Central and Saturday-Sunday 7:00am-8:00pm Central, or the dashboard at avant.com/login.
  • AvantCard: 855-752-7012 or [email protected]; to close the account Avant's article gives 1-855-AVANTCARD and warns that "trailing authorizations or payment returns" may still be processed and that any remaining balance stays owed.
  • Complaints: the notice for New Mexico consumers at the foot of avant.com gives [email protected] and 800-712-5407 for reporting a problem with the lender.
  • Cannot make a payment: Avant's article says to call 312-763-7438 to hear the payment options it can offer; its debt-settlement article gives [email protected] and 844-240-4539 and asks borrowers to contact Avant or a nonprofit credit counselor before paying a debt settlement company.
  • Loan payment charged incorrectly to a card: call 800-712-5407; Avant says it "will only refund payments which have been taken incorrectly" and sends refunds by ACH to the bank account on file, or otherwise by paper check. If the charge was on another bank's credit card, you can also send that card issuer a written billing-error dispute within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the charge (Fair Credit Billing Act). If the money came out of your bank account without your authorization, tell your bank within 60 days after it sent the statement showing the debit (Electronic Fund Transfer Act).
  • Credit-report discrepancy: write to the Resolutions Department at [email protected] or Avant, ATTN: Resolutions Department, 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60654.
  • Cancel an application: before a decision email, email [email protected] or call 1-800-712-5407; for a funded loan, Avant says you can return the funds at any time with no prepayment penalty by scheduling a full payoff, and remain responsible for interest accrued since funding.
  • AvantCard billing error: write to Avant at 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60654 within 60 days after the error appeared on your statement, describing what is wrong and why; to stop an automatic payment of the disputed amount, contact Avant at least 3 business days before the payment is scheduled. Avant's article warns that if you only call, "we are not required to investigate any potential errors".

Escalation. If Avant does not fix the problem, submit a complaint to the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint; the CFPB forwards it to the company, which generally responds within 15 days.

You can also complain to your state attorney general or to the state financial regulator listed on Avant's licensure page; for New Mexico, Avant's footer names the Financial Institutions Division, (505) 476-4885. Suspected fraud can be reported to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and the BBB accepts complaints on Avant's BBB profile.

Keep the loan agreement or cardmember agreement, payment confirmations and bank statements; they decide most payment disputes.

Regulator actions: FTC order (May 2019) and state actions in California, Colorado, Massachusetts and West Virginia

FTC (2019). The FTC's complaint, filed April 15, 2019 in the Northern District of Illinois, alleged that Avant falsely advertised that it would accept card payments, took payments without authorization (including repeat debits in one month), did not timely credit check payments, gave inaccurate payoff quotes and collected more after payoff, and required automatic bank debits as a condition of a loan. Avant settled, and the court entered the stipulated order on May 17, 2019. Avant admitted only the facts needed for jurisdiction. The order imposes a $3,850,000 judgment as equitable monetary relief, prohibits misrepresenting payment methods, payoff amounts and when payments are credited, and prohibits collecting by remotely created payment orders and conditioning credit on preauthorized electronic transfers. In January 2022 the FTC sent checks to 17,367 consumers, averaging $216, identified from Avant's records without a claim form, and in January 2023 it mailed another round of checks to eligible consumers because money remained in the fund.

California (January 31, 2019). The Department of Business Oversight consent order with Avant of California, LLC recites examination findings that Avant paid unlicensed website operators and "ping tree" vendors for referrals and gave decline-traffic referral services; Avant "neither admits nor denies" them, agreed to desist and refrain, and to pay a $75,000 penalty. The order says Avant stopped the practices during the examination.

Colorado (August 2020). An Assurance of Discontinuance among the Colorado UCCC Administrator, the Attorney General, Avant of Colorado, LLC, Avant, LLC, Avant PB SPV, LLC, WebBank and others resolved the case styled Fulford v. Avant of Colorado, LLC (Colorado District Court, Denver County, No. 17CV30377) on "true lender" claims. The document says it is "not an admission of any liability" and that defendants deny liability; it sets a 36 percent APR limit for specified loans under a safe-harbor structure, collective payments of $1,050,000 to the Attorney General and $250,000 in each of two fiscal years to Economic Literacy Colorado, and COVID-19 hardship accommodations for Colorado borrowers.

Massachusetts Attorney General (2021). The Assurance of Discontinuance with Avant, LLC, Avant II, LLC and Avant of Massachusetts, LLC (signed by Avant July 28, 2021) recites allegations "which Avant neither admits nor denies": before August 2018 Avant did not tell borrowers, in its first collection letter or within five days, that they could obtain documents verifying the debt, and its call policy (two calls per calendar week rather than per rolling seven days) led it to place more than two collection calls to a borrower's personal phone within seven days. Avant agreed to pay $1,600,000 within ten days of the effective date and to follow the assurance's debt collection requirements for three years. In the assurance Avant represents that it corrected the conduct on its own before the effective date.

Massachusetts Division of Banks (February 10, 2023). A consent order dated February 10, 2023, entered "without admitting any allegations", recites that Avant allegedly acted as a small loan company in Massachusetts from at least August 1, 2016 through May 31, 2019 without a license. Avant agreed to a $555,000 administrative penalty and to review Massachusetts small loans since August 1, 2016 and reimburse interest and fees above 12 percent.

West Virginia (2016). An Assurance of Voluntary Discontinuance between Avant, Inc. and the West Virginia Attorney General, signed for Avant on May 26, 2016 and approved by the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division on June 2, 2016, concerns 90 West Virginia loans made through Avant's platform from April to August 2014 under the bank-partner model. The Attorney General alleged that the loans carried interest above what state law allows; Avant "denies these allegations" and did not admit any violation. Avant agreed to a $225,000 civil penalty ($2,500 per loan), to stop collecting interest and fees on those loans and refund what it had collected, and to delete negative credit reports it had made about them. A copy is published in the National Consumer Law Center library.

Where to complain today. Because WebBank is a Utah state-chartered bank, the FDIC is its federal regulator; Avant's state lending licenses are supervised by the state regulators listed on its licensure page. Complaint routes, starting with the CFPB, are listed in the section on payment, card and credit-reporting problems.

Lawsuits: federal and state enforcement cases and your own legal options

The government cases are described in the regulator section: FTC v. Avant, LLC, No. 1:19-cv-02517 (N.D. Ill.), closed by the stipulated order entered May 17, 2019, and the Colorado and Massachusetts assurances. All three are resolved under their stated terms.

More on the lawsuitsShow less

Borrowers who believe a payment, collection call or credit report entry broke federal law can complain to the CFPB or their state attorney general without filing a lawsuit; FCRA, FDCPA and TCPA claims have their own filing deadlines, so a consumer lawyer should be consulted early.

Who is Avant: Avant, LLC, WebBank, licenses, products and 2026 news

Avant, LLC is a Delaware limited liability company headquartered at 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza in Chicago; the Florida corporate record lists Avant Holding Company, Inc. as its member. The company says it was founded in 2012 and, in a September 2026 release, that it has served about 4.8 million customers and connected them to more than $17.6 billion in credit. It is licensed through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System under NMLS ID 1246731, and its licensure page lists its state licenses and regulators.

Personal loans. Avant's personal-loans page shows loans of $2,000 to $35,000 (minimums vary by state), APRs of 9.95% to 35.99% and terms of 24 to 60 months, with an administration fee of up to 9.99% that is deducted from the loan proceeds. Its fee article says late fees may apply to a missed payment, with the amount and timing set by state law, and that a dishonored-payment fee may apply when a payment is returned unpaid. There is no fee for paying a loan off early and no balloon payment.

More company historyShow less

AvantCard. Avant's website says AvantCard applications approved directly through avant.com carry a $0 to $75 annual membership fee, a minimum credit limit of $300 and a 35.99% APR, and that pricing may differ for cards offered through other channels. Card terms for each card are in the cardmember agreement, and a paper copy can be requested from the online dashboard.

Bank partner. Avant says WebBank originates its loans and cards and Avant services them; the Colorado assurance describes WebBank as a Utah state-chartered bank. State officials in Colorado and West Virginia challenged this bank-partner model, and Massachusetts regulators acted over Avant's debt collection and small-loan licensing (see the regulator section).

2026. On July 29, 2026 Aperture Investors announced that it led a $300 million asset-based financing facility for Avant. On September 15, 2026 Avant announced that an affiliate of InterVest Capital Partners committed to buy up to $1 billion of personal loans made through Avant's platform over 24 months. On September 18, 2026 Avant said it had applied to the OCC and FDIC to establish Avant Bank, N.A., subject to regulatory approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact Avant about a loan or a card?

Avant's support page lists 800-712-5407 and [email protected] for personal loans and 855-752-7012 and [email protected] for the AvantCard, Monday to Friday 7:00am-10:00pm Central and Saturday-Sunday 7:00am-8:00pm Central, plus the dashboard at avant.com/login. Its mailing address is 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60654. To close an AvantCard account, call 1-855-AVANTCARD; Avant warns that trailing authorizations or payment returns may still post after closing and that you remain responsible for any remaining balance.

How do I log in to my AvantCard or Avant loan account?

Avant's support page lists one dashboard for both products: avant.com/login, shown under Credit Cards (AvantCard) and under Personal Loans. It does not list a separate AvantCard login page. If you cannot get in, Avant's support page gives (855) 752-7012 for the AvantCard and (800) 712-5407 for personal loans.

Who is the lender on an Avant loan or AvantCard?

WebBank, a Utah state-chartered bank, is the lender: Avant says "Avant branded credit products are issued by WebBank" and that WebBank originates the loans and cards while Avant services them. Avant, or one of its servicing partners, is your point of contact for payments, questions and disputes. In the 2020 Colorado case the state argued that Avant and Marlette, not the partner banks, were the "true lenders"; the defendants maintained that the banks were and denied liability, and the case was settled.

What did the FTC order against Avant require, and were refunds sent?

The stipulated order entered May 17, 2019 imposed a $3,850,000 judgment, barred misrepresenting accepted payment methods, payoff amounts and when payments are credited, barred collecting by remotely created payment orders and conditioning credit on automatic debits, and required posting payments within three business days of receipt. Avant admitted only the jurisdictional facts. On January 25, 2022 the FTC announced it was sending checks to 17,367 consumers, averaging $216, identified from Avant's records without a claim form, and in January 2023 it mailed another round of checks because money remained in the fund. The FTC never charges a fee or asks for account information to send a refund.

Can I pay an Avant loan with a credit or debit card?

Avant accepts certain credit cards, including MasterCard and Discover, and debit cards. The AvantCard cannot be used to repay an Avant loan, and Visa credit cards have not been accepted since September 15, 2018. A credit card payment is generally limited to one regular monthly installment per month. Avant charges no fee for card payments, but your card issuer may treat the payment as a cash advance and charge its own fee.

What can I do if Avant debited or charged a loan payment in error?

Call Avant at 800-712-5407 to discuss a refund. Avant says it "will only refund payments which have been taken incorrectly" and issues refunds by ACH to the bank account on file, or otherwise by paper check. For an unauthorized debit from your bank account, tell your bank promptly: under federal electronic-transfer rules you must report an error within 60 days after the statement showing it was sent. A charge on another bank's credit card can be disputed with that issuer in writing within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the charge. If the problem is not fixed, submit a complaint to the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.

How do I dispute an AvantCard statement error?

Write to Avant at 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60654 within 60 days after the error appeared on your statement, saying what you believe is wrong and why. Avant's article says "You must notify us of any potential errors in writing"; a phone call alone does not oblige Avant to investigate. To stop an automatic payment of the disputed amount, contact Avant at least 3 business days before the payment is scheduled. If Avant does not resolve it, you can submit a complaint to the CFPB at consumerfinance.gov/complaint.

Does Avant report to the credit bureaus and how do I dispute an entry?

Avant reports to TransUnion, Experian and Equifax monthly, usually showing by the middle of the following month. Checking your rates is a soft inquiry; continuing an application triggers a hard inquiry, listed as "WebBankAvant" at TransUnion and "WebBank/Avant" at the other bureaus. To dispute an entry, contact Avant's Resolutions Department at [email protected] or Avant, ATTN: Resolutions Department, 222 W Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60654. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you can also dispute directly with each bureau, which generally must investigate within 30 days.

Is there a prepayment penalty or balloon payment on an Avant loan?

Neither. Avant says there are "no fees for paying off the loan early" and no balloon payment at the end, because its loans are fully amortizing: the scheduled payments bring the balance to zero. Separately, Avant's fee article lists a non-refundable administration fee deducted from the loan proceeds at funding, plus late fees and dishonored-payment fees whose amounts vary by state; your loan agreement shows the exact amounts.

Which state regulators have taken action involving Avant?

Five state actions involve Avant: a California Department of Business Oversight consent order over referral payments (January 31, 2019, $75,000 penalty), a Colorado Assurance of Discontinuance over the bank-partner loan model (August 2020, $1.05 million to the Attorney General plus $500,000 for financial literacy), a Massachusetts Attorney General assurance over debt collection (2021, $1.6 million), a Massachusetts Division of Banks consent order over unlicensed small loans (February 10, 2023, $555,000 plus refunds of interest and fees above 12 percent) and a West Virginia Attorney General assurance approved June 2, 2016 over 90 loans made in 2014 ($225,000 penalty plus refunds of interest and fees). In none did Avant admit the allegations; in Colorado and West Virginia it denied them.
