Auto Approve refinance: credit check, fees, withdrawing and who to call

How the process runs. Auto Approve's FAQ describes six steps: you give personal, vehicle and employment information; its loan consultants work out which loans you qualify for; it submits the application to the lender you choose; it prepares the new loan and title documents for e-signature; it gets the loan funded and works with the DMV on the title; and you then make payments to the new lender.

More detailShow less

The FAQ lists a driver's license, current proof of insurance, current registration, pay stubs or proof of income and, optionally, the current loan contract as the documents to have ready.

Credit check. The FAQ says: "Getting a quote does not affect your credit score," and that the "soft" inquiry Auto Approve performs does not affect the score. It adds: "When you choose to move forward with refinancing your vehicle, a 'hard' credit inquiry will occur and appear on your credit history."

More detailShow less

The Terms of Service say that by submitting an inquiry you "authorize Auto Approve to pull your credit report for prequalification purposes" and authorize any lender that receives your application to pull your credit report to evaluate it. Ask the consultant, before agreeing to proceed, whether the step you are about to take triggers the hard inquiry.

Fees. The FAQ says Auto Approve "does not charge an application fee" and that "completing your refinance requires no out of pocket fees." It also says the cost of refinancing "includes admin and document fees, title transfer fees, state fees (if applicable), and the cost of any extra services you choose to add, such as GAP and extended warranty or other optional service plans," and that the loan consultant provides an itemized breakdown in the refinance package.

More detailShow less

The site's disclosure explains why nothing is paid up front: all refinancing-related costs are included in the amount financed. Those fees are therefore added to your new loan balance and paid with interest, so compare the amount financed and the APR in the lender's Truth in Lending disclosure with your current loan, not only the monthly payment. Read the breakdown line by line before e-signing, and confirm which optional products, such as GAP or a service plan, are in the package and that each is one you agreed to. Your current lender may also charge a prepayment penalty; Auto Approve's resource article on fees says such penalties "can vary widely and can be quite expensive."

Withdrawing. The Terms of Service state: "You may withdraw your inquiry or application at any time." The Terms give no set method, so put the request in writing to [email protected], repeat it by phone, and keep a copy. Withdrawing ends the application, but under the FAQ a hard inquiry, once made, appears on your credit history. After you sign, your rights depend on the loan contract with the lender and on each separate add-on contract, such as GAP or a vehicle service contract; each contract names who handles cancellation and refunds, so read those terms before signing.

Rate offers. The FAQ says that when you receive a lender-approved offer, Auto Approve locks the rate "for up to 30 days," and that the first payment is typically due 45 days from the contract date, with a 90-day deferred payment option "for qualified applicants."

Calls and texts. By accepting the Terms you "expressly consent to be contacted" by calls, prerecorded messages and automated texts. The Mobile Terms say the texts are transactional and that "Auto Approve does not send marketing or promotional text messages." To stop texts, reply STOP, which is processed immediately, or write to [email protected] or call (844) 314-1410; the Mobile Terms say email or phone opt-outs are honored within 10 business days.

For Auto Approve marketing email, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message. The Privacy Policy also points to 1-888-5OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688): that is the credit bureaus' line, also at optoutprescreen.com, for opting out of prescreened credit offers from all companies, for five years by phone or online or permanently with a signed form.

If it is not resolved. Contact Auto Approve first and keep the itemized breakdown, the offer and the signed documents. Once the loan is funded, payments go to the lender named in your loan documents, and a cancellation or refund of an add-on goes to the party named in that add-on contract.

If the dispute stays open, file with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (consumerfinance.gov/complaint), the Federal Trade Commission (ReportFraud.ftc.gov), your state attorney general or the Minnesota Attorney General, where Auto Approve is based, and the BBB.

Lenders. Auto Approve's own guide to the company says it "is not a direct lender" and gathers offers from its network of lending partners. The FAQ says your consultant will "submit your application to one of our preferred lending partners," and the Terms of Service say Auto Approve "does not guarantee that a lender will make you an offer" and that loans are available only in states where Auto Approve or its lender network is licensed or authorized. The Privacy Policy says that when you apply, your information is disclosed to its lending partners and to the credit reporting agencies it works with, and states that Auto Approve does not sell personal information. Its Texas lending license is described under Company information on this page.

Company statements. The site says customers "save over $100 per month on average," that it has an A+ BBB rating and a 96 percent would-recommend rating on LendingTree, and that it never marks up the price you pay above the rate the bank offers. The savings figure and the no-markup promise are the company's own claims. The site's disclosure says its advertised APR assumes a 2019 or newer vehicle, a FICO score of at least 730 and a term of up to 72 months, and that all loans are subject to credit and lender approval; the rate you are offered depends on your credit and the lender, and the itemized breakdown in your refinance package shows what you actually pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Auto Approve do a hard credit check?

Auto Approve's FAQ says getting a quote involves a soft inquiry that does not affect your credit score, and that a hard inquiry appears on your credit history when you choose to move forward with refinancing. Its Terms of Service also authorize Auto Approve and any lender that receives your application to pull your credit report. Ask the consultant which step triggers the hard inquiry before you agree to it.

Does Auto Approve charge fees?

The FAQ says Auto Approve does not charge an application fee and that completing the refinance requires no out-of-pocket fees. It also says the cost of the refinance includes admin and document fees, title transfer fees, state fees where applicable and any extra services you add, such as GAP or an extended warranty, with an itemized breakdown in the refinance package. The site's disclosure says these costs are included in the amount financed, so they are added to the new loan rather than paid at signing; check the amount financed and the APR in the lender's disclosure.

How do I cancel an Auto Approve application?

The Terms of Service say you may withdraw your inquiry or application at any time. Write to [email protected] or call (844) 336-3365 and keep a record of the request. Once you have signed, your rights depend on the loan contract with the lender and on each add-on contract, such as GAP or a service contract; each names who handles cancellation and refunds.

What is the Auto Approve phone number?

The site header lists (844) 336-3365. The Contact us page also lists (833) 950-1509 and (312) 275-7633, open Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm Central and Saturday and Sunday 8am to 6pm Central. The email address is [email protected].

Is Auto Approve the lender on the refinance loan?

Auto Approve's guide to the company says it is not a direct lender. The FAQ describes Auto Approve submitting your application to one of its preferred lending partners, and says that after funding you make your payments to the new lender. Separately, a Texas Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner order describes Auto Approve, LLC as a regulated lender licensed in Texas under Chapter 342 of the Finance Code. The Terms of Service say loans are available only in states where Auto Approve or its lender network is licensed or authorized. Your loan documents name the lender.

How do I stop Auto Approve calls and texts?

Reply STOP (or STOPALL, OPT OUT, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END or QUIT) to a text; keyword opt-outs are processed immediately. You can also email [email protected] or call (844) 314-1410, and the policy says email and phone opt-outs are honored within 10 business days. Auto Approve says its texts are transactional and not marketing. For marketing email, use the unsubscribe link in the message. To stop prescreened credit offers from all companies, the credit bureaus' opt-out is 1-888-5OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688) or optoutprescreen.com.

Does Auto Approve require arbitration?

The website Terms of Service contain no arbitration clause or class-action waiver, and they state that the terms are subject to the laws of the State of Minnesota. The refinance loan is a separate contract with the lender, so check that contract for its own arbitration or dispute terms before you sign.

Where can I file a complaint about Auto Approve?

Start with Auto Approve at [email protected] or (844) 336-3365, in writing, and keep copies of the offer and the itemized breakdown. If the loan is already funded, payment issues go to the lender named in your loan documents, and add-on cancellations or refunds to the party named in that add-on contract. You can also submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint, the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, your state attorney general or the Minnesota Attorney General, where the company is based, and the BBB, where Auto Approve, LLC has an accredited profile.

How long does an Auto Approve rate offer last?
