3M complaints: where to take a product or warranty problem
This page was checked on 2026-10-20. 3M's Help Center page lists a phone line, 1-888-3M-HELPS (1-888-364-3577), open Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, and a message form with subject choices that include "Complaint" and "Products & Services - Consumer". The page also says: "We have recently been experiencing a higher than normal volume of requests." (company statement). We did not submit the form.
- Which 3M business? The Help Center page lists consumer topics (Cleaning and Protecting; Decorating, Organizing & Crafts; Home Improvement; Office; Personal Health Care; School Supplies; Sports and Recreation). For health care products it names Solventum, "former 3M Health Care Business", with its own contact route (+1 855 423 6725 or +1 612 842 1263, or solventum.com). Brands such as Scotch, Post-it, Command, Filtrete, Scotch-Brite, Scotchgard, Nexcare, Futuro and ACE are listed on 3M's consumer page.
- Recalls. 3M's "Product Recalls" page lists CPSC recall notices. The entries read on 2026-10-20 include Scotch thermal laminators (two notices), Filtrete room air purifiers (fire hazard), hard hats (shock hazard), an overhead projector and a 3M Personal Safety Division "Stop Use & Recall Notice" for 3M PELTOR X4 Series earmuffs made between March 2020 and September 2022. Each entry quotes its own remedy; for example the air purifier notice says to "unplug the recalled air purifier and contact 3M to obtain a prepaid shipping box to return the product for a free replacement." The page shows a date of 01/04/2018 beside the entries we read, which we did not verify as the recall dates, and says: "The product recalls listed may not include all 3M product recalls."
- Newer CPSC laminator recalls. The CPSC notice dated October 15, 2026 covers about 53,634 Scotch thermal laminators, model TL1302Z, sold on Amazon.com from June 2024 through September 2026; CPSC says the firm received "63 reports of the laminators smoking, melting and overheating, including five reports of the laminators catching fire", with no injuries reported. The remedy reads: "Consumers should stop using and unplug the recalled thermal laminators immediately and contact 3M Company to receive a full refund." CPSC lists 3M Company at 800-772-4337 (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday) and scotchbrand.com. A CPSC notice dated October 23, 2025 covers about 13,440 Scotch model TL909-50 laminators with serial numbers between 2406000001 and 2501001920, sold at Office Depot, Office Smart and School Specialty, with the same full-refund remedy. These two notices were not on 3M's recalls page when we read it. Check the model number on the sticker on the bottom of the product against the CPSC notice before acting.
- Product safety incidents. Reports about a consumer product can be filed at SaferProducts.gov (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission). Complaints about a store purchase can also go to your state attorney general.
- BBB. BBB accepts complaints against the business through its profile (see the complaint record section for the figures).

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and archive reports
Figures below are as displayed on 2026-10-20 and are not combined with one another.
- BBB profile "3M Consumer Relations", Saint Paul, MN (headquarters and corporate-owned locations): not BBB Accredited; BBB Rating A-; BBB's stated reason for the rating is "Failure to respond to 7 complaint(s) filed against business"; "11 complaints in the last 3 years" and "2 complaints in the last 12 months"; reviews tab "1 /5 stars", "Average of 1 Customer Review". BBB has several other 3M listings, including a B- rated "3M Company" listing under Commercial Products Distributors; those figures are not used here.
- Trustpilot "3M" (3m.com): 1.4 from 46 reviews, "Unclaimed profile"; Trustpilot says "we don't fact-check reviews". The reviews we read on the first page described adhesive products and other matters; their claims are the reviewers' own and unverified.
- Archive reports on this site: 2 complaints name 3M as the offender. A 2002 report describes a leather-furniture warranty plan whose cover, the writer says, bore 3M / Scotchgard branding; the writer says a 3M representative told them their letter belonged with the warranty plan's service center and that 3M was not responsible. A 2011 report, filed under "Minnesota mining (3M)", alleges leaking breast implants. Both are unverified accounts by the writers, and 3M's response to them is not part of the record we hold.
State attorney general and regulator matters described in 3M's SEC filing
3M's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (company filing, read 2026-10-20) describes the following government-related matters. They are the company's description of lawsuits and settlements, not findings by us.
- New Jersey. The filing says the New Jersey Attorney General filed two actions in March 2019 over alleged PFAS discharges at two facilities, the Chambers Works Facility in Salem County and the Parlin Facility in Middlesex County, "neither of which the Company ever owned or operated", on allegations that 3M supplied PFAS to them. In May 2025 3M "agreed to a proposed judicial consent order" under which it would pay New Jersey "up to $450 million"; the filing states "The New Jersey Settlement is not an admission of liability by the Company." It also says 3M expects to pay $400 million of that amount, with payments beginning in 2026 over 8 years for one part and beginning in 2030 through 2050 for another. The filing (as of its date) said the parties were awaiting the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey's ruling on the motion to approve. A New Jersey Attorney General release dated August 7, 2026 announced "judicial approval" of the settlements with 3M and the DuPont entities and says the combined settlements are valued at approximately $2.5 billion; that figure is the Attorney General's combined value for DuPont and 3M, not 3M's amount. We did not open the court's order.
- Other states. The filing says several state attorneys general have sued 3M and other defendants over alleged PFAS contamination, many in the federal AFFF multidistrict litigation, and lists many states. Outside that litigation it describes cases brought by Connecticut (filed January 2024), Illinois (filed March 2022, concerning the Cordova, Illinois facility; the state court set an updated trial date of March 2027; the filing also says 3M's appeal of the federal court's November 2025 remand order remains pending) and Maine (filed March 2023), among others, and says 3M is in discussions with several state attorneys general and agencies. These are allegations; the filing reports no final judgment in them.
- Workplace safety. The filing says that after a May 2023 fatality at the Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin facility, the Department of Labor announced in November 2023 that it had issued two citations to 3M alleging willful safety violations, and that in September 2024 3M settled with OSHA and the Department of Labor in September 2024 for "an immaterial payment amount" without "a finding of willful safety violations", and that in October 2024 it received a grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Wisconsin, with which it "will continue to cooperate".
Litigation record: Combat Arms earplugs and PFAS settlements
The facts below come from 3M's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (a company filing) and are summarized with its own wording where quoted.
Combat Arms Earplugs (CAE). The filing says Aearo made the earplugs from about 1999, 3M acquired Aearo in 2008 and sold them until they were discontinued in 2015, and that 3M and Aearo "believe the CAE were effective and safe when used properly". In August 2023 3M, Aearo and related entities entered a settlement arrangement intended to resolve substantially all existing and potential claims in the federal MDL (N.D. Fla.) and a coordinated Hennepin County, Minnesota state proceeding; it "does not constitute an admission of liability or wrongdoing". 3M agreed to contribute up to $6.0 billion between 2023 and 2029, subject to participation thresholds; in March 2024 it announced participation above 99% against a required 98%, and payments began. The filing says that in September 2025 the MDL court confirmed all MDL cases had been resolved, that other litigation could arise elsewhere (it cites a writ of summons in Australia and a Letter Before Action in the United Kingdom), and that 3M's accrued liability for CAE was $1.9 billion as of June 30, 2026. The official settlement site, combatarmssettlement.com, says it serves participating claimants and their counsel, who use a portal set up by BrownGreer as Settlement Administrator; it showed "Total Payments Issued in all MSAs: $3,081,576,479" and "Cases Remaining Pending in the MDL 0" (updated October 9, 2026), and its Minnesota table (updated September 25, 2025) showed 11 still pending. These administrator figures are not combined with 3M's $6.0 billion or $1.9 billion figures. The registration dates listed on the site are in 2024, and no open registration was seen on the page as read on 2026-10-20.
PFAS and public water systems. In June 2023 3M entered a class settlement with eligible U.S. public water suppliers (the "PWS Settlement"), approved in March 2024 and effective in May 2024. The filing says 3M "does not admit any liability or wrongdoing", will pay $10.5 billion to $12.5 billion in total, with payments scheduled from 2024 through 2036, and that class members relying on PFAS test results had to submit them to the claims administrator by July 31, 2026. The class described is water suppliers; the filing excerpt we read does not describe a claim process for individual households. Personal injury cases in the AFFF MDL are described separately in the filing; it says the court vacated the schedule for the first bellwether personal injury trial in August 2025, that "No new trial date has been set", and that general causation expert discovery on liver and thyroid cancers was completed in April 2026.
Allegations in lawsuits are not findings of liability.
