Refused store credit on vacuum return without a receipt

I bought a vacuum cleaner from Home Depot. I had to return it because it was too heavy for the person I bought it for. I had all the paperwork that came with the product as well as the original box. The vacuum looked great, since it had not been used much, just tried out. I lost the receipt, which I am still looking for.

When I took the product to the store, they refused to give me a credit. They said their return policy had changed and that they do not give credit for products without a receipt.

See the link below for their return policy. It states: "Returns without a receipt: A store credit or credit to a Home Depot Commercial Credit Account may be issued based on the lowest selling price of the returned merchandise." So, is this a rip-off or what?

I contacted their customer support and I will let you know the outcome when I find out. Meanwhile, this is just one of the many bad interactions I have had with Home Depot. If anybody has stock in this company, they had better reconsider it.
