Home Depot - Vaux Hall Store
Return Refused Without Receipt on Discontinued Items in 90 Days

We renovated our office space and purchased numerous construction materials from the Vaux Hall location of Home Depot (identified as its "superstore"). Since we did not know for sure exactly how much of the material would be needed for the project, I asked the sales associate whether the excess (and unused) items could be returned. I was repeatedly assured that Home Depot had a liberal return policy and that even if we did not have the receipt, we could still return the unused items for store credit.
After we completed the renovations, I attempted to return the excess and unused items to Home Depot. Initially, the woman at the return desk told me that I did not purchase the items from Home Depot. When I pushed back and told her that they were purchased from Home Depot, she called in another woman, who told me that the items had been discontinued and therefore, since I did not have the receipt, they could not give me a refund. This time, though, she acknowledged that the items had been purchased from their store at least, but that they would not take the items back.
I pushed back again, and out came Rich, a junior manager, who repeated the same line and told me that since I did not have a receipt, there was nothing Home Depot would do. In response, I asked him whether Home Depot takes back items without a receipt. He said that it is up to the manager to decide and that since they discontinued carrying the particular color, I could not return it, even though it was still within the 90 day period of time of purchase (since they took back other items bought at the same time). I then asked for the store manager, and I was told (at 11 am) that he had gone home for the day! What!
So out popped Emil, who told me that even though it may have been purchased within the 90 day window, it was not his problem and that Home Depot would not honor its return policy, even for store credit. So, if Home Depot discontinues a product within 90 days of the date of your purchase and you no longer have the receipt, the Home Depot superstore in Vaux Hall, NJ takes the position that it is tough on you and you are out of luck. Nice way to do business and the reason why it continues to lose market share to the other stores. Disgraceful conduct, to say the least, and the reason why I will never shop there again.
