Directv - Initial agreement information lacking

I was w / Direct TV for over 12 years. My DVR stopped working. I called and asked for a replacement. A replacement was sent. Shrtly ther after my wife lost her job. I called to cancel the Direct TV service. There was some concern over the box - would I have to pay for the box. There was never any mention of a cancellation fee. Once we found out that I would not have to pay for the box i cancelled the service. After they received the box they charged me $400 dollars for cancelling. Now, while I was tryng to cancel they gave me all kinds of great offers that I had to refuse. Now, I am stuck w / this bill. Everything was done orally so i have no proof of what was said. They will not go back to listen to the tapes. I will never agree to anything over the phone again. Make sure you get everything in writing first. Most copmpanies don't even work this way anymore (Verizon, etc.). Leaves them free to make the changes that hey see fit. I will do everything I can to keep people away from Direct TV.

ELLEN FILIPIAK, CEO When the person that spoke to us about Directv he told us that it was going to be for 1 year contract. Come to know that the contract was for 2 years and i was never told that and didnt sign a contract
