Understaffed Store: Rental Return Delayed, 40-Minute Paint Wait

Yesterday morning at 6:30, I returned two wallpaper strippers I rented the day before at your store in Geneva, Illinois. I assumed I could do this quickly since the store opens at 6:00. I pulled up to the tool rental door, got out, and stood in the rain ringing the bell for someone to let me in. No one came. Finally, another customer inside the tool rental tried to open the door from the inside, only to have an alarm go off. The door would not open. Wet and disgusted, I parked my truck and walked into the main door, only to find every associate in the store in some kind of meeting in the paint department. I asked about being helped, only to be told that someone had just gone to the tool rental to shut off the alarm. A man helped me check in the strippers. I noted as I took a package of paint rollers to the checkout that several customers were wandering the aisles with no one to help them.

I find this is typical of Home Depot over the past two or three years: little help for the customers. Earlier this week I went to the paint department at 11:00 a.m. to buy a gallon of one color and a quart of another. It took 40 minutes to have the ONE person in the paint department go back and forth between me and four other customers, trying to move each person's purchase along.

I only go to Home Depot these days for things I cannot get at the store down the street, where the service is friendly, plentiful, and prompt. Home Depot used to be great, but not any more. There are too few associates to help customers, few smiles or greetings, and long waits while the harried staff struggles to keep up. You guys have lost my confidence and, for the most part, my business. I spent over $4,000 last year in remodeling projects at that other store, and that is a pretty typical figure for the past 4 or 5 years. Your share of my annual spending is very small because you just do not deliver.
