Ripoff! Renews verbal contract without acceptance - lied and said we called and renewed contract. Nationwide

Electronics and household app.

I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else. My husband and I had a one year contact with 2 cell phones. We got a contract with many minutes so that we would be very padded and never go over. The year had passed, and we continued to use our cell phones, assumingly, being billed month to month at the same amount.

Recently, my husband called to inquire about different phones and data plans for those phones. He was told by the customer representative that we were under contract. He was told that he had called and requested an additional 500 minutes per month, and that as a result, his contract was renewed.

My husband is sure he never called. He was very angry and told the rep that he never called and renewed. He told her there is no way he would have requested additional minutes - we did not need them - we never went over during the contract period, so why would we need them?

After complaining to the rep on the phone for a while, he/she agreed to take us off the alleged "contract" and bring us back to month to month. To me, this was just more evidence that the supposed verbal agreement to renew the contract never happened! There is no way that AT&T would so readily agree to "cancel" our "contract" without a cancellation fee if the contract actually existed.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is anyone out there stuck in a contract they never agreed to be in the first place?
