Contract Dispute - DirectTV HD

I signed up for High Definition Direct TV service when I lived in Denver, NC. I specifically asked prior to getting the service whether there was a cancellation fee, and I was told that there was no cancellation fee unless I switched service at my current residence. I had to purchase the HD box from BestBuy and apparently there was a provision describing a cancellation fee on my receipt. No one ever pointed it out to me nor did I agree to such a provision. Thereafter, I was laid off from my position and had to relocate to live with my son in Philadelphia. Direct TV said I owed them the cancellation fee because I could not force my son to sign up for their service. Despite my numerous conversations and letters, they have insisted that I owe them this fee. They have listed it as an unpaid debt on my financial history and have cost me the loss of a potential job because of it. I am considering pursing legal action for the damages they have caused me.
