1911 pistol failed to feed and trade-in lost $175

I recently bought an AMC 1911 at Buds and it wouldn't feed. I took it back for repair, only to be told that 1911s need to be racked and released using the slide release to feed each round - which I knew wasn't accurate, and which was contradicted by the owner's manual for the gun.
Not trusting the pistol, knowing Buds wasn't going to do the repair properly, and needing a carry gun, I decided to just trade it back in. I lost $175 on the deal. Basically I was stuck between a rock and a hard place: losing money, or keeping a broken gun.
