I have been a DirecTV customer for over a year, with a two-year agreement. I signed with DirecTV because they offered Fox Sports Net and Versus - my only two requirements. They dropped Versus because they couldn't come to an agreement with Comcast, who owns Versus, so I no longer was getting half of what I wanted.
I called DirecTV and told them I was unhappy with their service and why. I told them it was a deal breaker for me. They said they understood, and to keep me as a satisfied customer, they would give me NHL CenterIce for free, which I agreed to (on 12/28/09).
When I was still unable to watch my team play, I changed TV companies less than a month later, understanding there would be a cancellation fee.
I called DirecTV and spoke to them and told them I was unhappy, why, and cancelled service. The customer service person I spoke to told me that the charge would be between $220 and $240, which I agreed to.
On 01/26/10, DirecTV withdrew $605.95 from my checking account. They decided to charge me the full price for Center Ice, about $180 (so much for "free") and charged me $340 to disconnect - a total of $520 with less than a year to go and definitely not what I had agreed to.
Without my knowledge or consent, DirecTV overcharged me $300 and left me without a way to buy groceries for my four children.
I will NEVER do business with DirecTV again, but would happily recommend. Sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company. Plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome.
