Directv creates a new contract when you try to cancel service

Directv customer for 3 1/2 years with the last 1 1/2 being contract free. I have no complaint about any of DirecTv's product offerings and enjoyed the service, but I decided to switch to Comcast so I could bundle tv and internet. Before signing up with Comcast I called DirecTv and was told that my contract had expired in December and I could cancel my service without a penalty. My new service was installed and I called to cancel my DirecTv and was told that I was three months into a new contract and would have to pay $180.00 to cancel. The logic behind this was that I had a new box installed and by signing a WORK ORDER I agreed to a new 12 month contract. I explained that their customer service rep. Told that I could pay $75.00 for the box and I would not be entered into a new contract (which I did). Also, I did not recieve any new service or discounts. The installation technician made no mention of the work order being being a new contract and in fact DirecTv told me that their installers are contractors and can not discuss contracts. This is a very deceptive practice and everyone should be warned not to sign a work order from DirecTv unless you are alright with committing to another year of service. They have a good product, but their shady business practices make them not the hassle.
