Disconnecting service - residential phone service

I am trying to disconnect service for a verizon residential number. I have been transferred around for 29 minutes and then hung up on. The minute they find out I am disconnecting service they all of a sudden can't help, despite being the operator for that service. HELP! I am so frustrated.
