Unprofessional Return policy - Windstream Cable/internet

I recently received a debt collections call regarding a past due balance from Windstream regarding my previous cable/internet service. My service ended in August and I was contacted by the collections agency in July. Windstream claims that I did not return my equipment. My equipment was indeed returned but I do not have proof anymore. Of course, one of my complaints is in regards to the false allegations that my equipment was not returned. More importantly, I feel like I was not properly contacted by Windstream about my past due balance. I was not contacted by mail or by phone. The local office representative stated they called my landlord but not me in regards to my bill. I now that its been so long since my dispute, I am not able to settle with Windstream and I must settle with a debt collections agency. This means I will have a "ding" on my credit no matter what action I take. I feel like I was unfairly treated by Windstream because I was not properly contacted to settle my dispute without involving debt collections and effecting my credit. If I had been properly contacted by Windstream I would have been able to provide my proof of return and at minimum been able to settle the dispute without any harm to my credit rating.
