Savings account charged instead of debit card, $70 in fees

I did an online transaction through PayPal, selecting my debit card as the payment source. The transaction seemingly went through, the company got paid, and I thought all was well.

A few days later, my savings account was overdrawn. I came to find out that PayPal took the funds from my attached bank account (my savings) instead of from my debit card, as they had been instructed.

I called PayPal, and the woman on the phone took over 15 minutes to find that allegedly my bank (which I have been with for many, many years) declined my debit transaction, and that is why they took it from my savings account.

I contacted my bank, and not only did PayPal not even attempt a charge on my debit card (because it would have easily cleared, funds were available), but they had charged my savings account AGAIN. Worse yet, the woman at the bank told me the only way for me to prevent PayPal from charging me is to close my savings account!

I then re-contacted PayPal, and the new woman on the phone flatly denied that they even tried charging my debit card and said they only withdrew it from my savings! Mind you, this was less than 20 minutes after hanging up with her co-worker (who admitted their wrongdoing) and talking with my bank over the phone.

Essentially, do NOT attach any bank account to PayPal. Their system will withdraw from whatever they see fit. I will never again use their service, no matter what lengths I have to go through to prevent it. It has already cost me $70 I cannot get back (my bank does not refund NSF fees on savings accounts). One glitch on PayPal's end, and they are not the ones forced to pay; the customer is.
