"Because it's only $400..."

Best Buy currently has the Toshiba Satellite 540 laptop on sale for $399 (with no rebate, mind you). I went in yesterday intending to purchase one, and was told by two different employess that I didn't want this computer because if I tried to run more than one application at a time I would "get the blue screen of death." Each employee spent several minues trying to convince me not to buy this laptop. Since I have never been in a store where the salespeople tried to convince me NOT to buy a product, I was suspicious from the start.

As they attempted to show me other laptops which were much more expensive, I began to see what the game was. The cheap computer was simply bait to get you into the store so that they could sell you a more expensive computer. I'm sure they were making little to no profit selling this computer for $399, considering that last week it sold for $549. I didn't buy the computer.

But, chance would have it that I met a Best Buy employee at a Super Bowl party that same night, and I brought the situation up to him. His explanation was that "a $400 computer is only gonna last you about a year, so you are better off to just get a more expensive one that will last longer... That's what they were trying to say." So I said, "Well, if the computer is such a piece of crap why are you selling it to begin with?" And he says, "Because it's only $400."

So presumably it's okay to sell me a computer that will perpetually suck and break down in a year because it only costs $400. I guess last week it was okay because it was "only" $549. I don't know who they pay to hypnoize these monkeys who work there, but they do a damn good job. Even off the clock the Best Buy robots are hard at work...
