Deployed soldier ripped off by verizon wireless ripoff

I'm a paratrooper in the U.S. Army and deployed to Iraq 1 October 05. I called Verizion 22 September 05 to cancell my contract and paid my bill in full. The customer service representative stated that I could place service on hold status and call once I return to get it turned back on!
I called yesterday, 26 February 06 to reactivate my phone and they had disconnected it due to non-payment. My bill was not paid in full! When speaking with customer service they stated that in order for me to get service I had to pay over $300.00 dollars to settle the past due amount and re-connect service.
This was a fine way to treat a Soldier serving his country in time of war! If you are a Soldier, Sailor or Airman, I suggest you cancel your contract with Verizion if you deploy! They will rip you off! Truley un-American! Makes me wonder who's freedom and rights I'm protecting with my life!
Thank you
