Extended contract without consent

A few months ago I called T-Mobile to cancel the data plan I was paying extra for. I specifically asked the customer service representative if doing so would extend my contract and she assured me that it would not.
A few days ago I called to cancel my plan and they told me the contract was extended until 2014 because of the changes to the data plan. Seriously?
Every time I call T-mobile they start out by saying, "I see you've been a loyal customer for 13 years." Then they do this!?!
