Ought memory

Have computer used by man husband used it like a typewriter, almost notheing on hard drive. Came with only 256mg. Thought I would give it to My son.
Ordered 2gs Memory from Newegg. I gave her company dell. And Model NUmber. When Memory came I was sick. When I was better I installed Memory. Right after installing computer litle light came on and computer started beeping I looked on Dell sight and the beeps said Memory not properly Identified or used to be selected.
I did not know what to do. I took new memory out and put old memory back in.
Still would not do anything. Took it to a repair shop. They said motherboard was blown. I called newegg they said could not help. Had the repair place fix computer. Total cost $342.19-$75.00= 267.19 I did not order Memory as I did not know what to order, I thought they were supposed to know. It was a good computer just did not have enough Memory. All so I called newegg before instaling memory because Dell said put the lowest number memory in first. Both of these gigs were the same number. She said it did not matter.
