I was at Target in Lubbock, Texas and waiting in line behind a person having issues with a store credit. I was next in line, but it was taking a while and the line grew to six people including me. A call was made for an additional cashier. As the additional cashier was coming up to open another register, she announced that she could "help someone at her register". Everyone behind me dashed to the newly opened register. So, after already waiting for a long period of time in the original line, I became the LAST person in line instead of next in line... Extremely frustrating! Perhaps it would make sense to train cashiers to: 1) recognize the situation, 2.) be considerate, make eye contact and then ask to help the NEXT person in line, as opposed to whoever can make it the newly opened register first. I left the store mad, frustrated and late to an appointment.
