Mother Accused of Lying Over Returned Faucet Sprayer

Service at my neighborhood Home Depot, in Grafton, is usually decent, but today they distressed my mother, who is 72, and now I may take my business to Fleet Farm or to the Menards in West Bend.
Simply put, Mom purchased a new sprayer for her kitchen faucet at Home Depot and had me come by to fit it. On arrival I noticed a bit of lime scale on the supposedly brand-new part. Asked about its origin, she named the Grafton Home Depot. My comment to her was that it seemed to have been used.
Installing it failed because the sprayer did not work, so I had her bring it back. The receipt had gone into the kitchen garbage earlier that day, and I said not to dig it out and that in-store credit would be fine.
The attendant at the store gave her a hard time and suggested she was lying. Thinking about it now, it appears that another customer pulled a bait and switch in the store with an old sprayer, or else the item went back on the shelf, which HD says it never does.
Whichever it was, I am very upset about the accusations Home Depot directed at my mother. I will look at other stores from now on, and I hope others will too. In the economy we are in and entering, store managers and employees need to keep service at the front of their minds when they train and hire.
My advice is to examine everything you buy there very closely if shopping at HD is unavoidable.
