DSL & Telephone Service billed for canceled services gouged for international long distance

Verizon's customer service is the worst. Expect to spend at least 10 minutes every time you try to call them trying to resolve an issue. I recently moved my home and business and got FIOS service at the new address, and I began to dread having to call Verizon for anything.

1. I received a bill for DSL service at the address from which I had moved about a month before the "billing period" shown on the bill. There were no more telephone charges on the bill, so Verizon obviously received my notification to cancel the service before the billing period. When I called Verizon to ask why I was still being billed for DSL after I canceled my Verizon service (telephone and DSL), the woman at customer told me that it "could be" a particular something. It turns out she was merely guessing. When I said I didn't want her to guess, but to tell me why I was being charged, she acted put out. Verizon and I finally arrived at the truth of the matter (during a call the next day) which was that there was a "delay" between my canceling the service and the cancel order being put in for the DSL part, and that Verizon would cancel the charge. And this is a telecommunications company that advertises how fast and reliable its communications are?

2.in my new location (also serviced by Verizon) I noticed that Verizon was charging me $5.75 per minute for calls to China. My MCI calling card gives me calls to China for $0.20 per minute. So Verizon charges more than 28 times what its competition charges for the same service. Needless to say, I won't be using Verizon anymore for ANY international calls.

Bottom line: You have to watch Verizon like a hawk to prevent overbilling or outrageous gouging. NEVER assume that they're going to treat you fairly. Check everything.
